On Monday 7th December 2009, Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic unveiled SpaceShipTwo (SS2) to the world at Mojave Spaceport, California for the first time. 800 press, future astronauts and VIP guests gathered in the desert for a press conference and to view the roll out of the world’s first commercial space line.
The cost of a seat on this luxury Virgin Galactic spacecraft, also known as the SpaceshipTwo (SS2), is US $200,000.
Sir Richard Branson and Burt Rutan led the press conference; special recognition went to the team at Scaled Composites whose hard work and dedication have made this happen. Governors Bill Richardson and Arnold Schwarzenegger both contributed at the press conference, celebrating this huge milestone and also joining Holly, Richard’s daughter in naming the spaceship, VSS Enterprise.
The design of SpaceShipTwo (SS2) will be refined during an extensive test flying programme to commence shortly. It will carry up to six passenger astronauts and up to two pilot astronauts into space on a sub-orbital flight.
What to expect
The Virgin Galactic sub-orbital space flight will include three days of training including full G-force acclimatisation and fitness assessment. The flight itself will be a two-hour sub-orbital experience, which will be followed by a launch at 50,000 feet (about 10 miles) above earth. After accelerating to Mach 3.3 in 30 seconds in a vertical ascent, SpaceShipTwo will slow to reach 68 miles into space from where passengers can view the Earth below from their zero gravity position.
Deposits start at $20,000 and the first flight is expected in two to three years’ time. The six-figure price tag does not include flights, transfers or accommodation.
