World Cup 2010: Goal.com's Global Team Of Editors Give Their Predictions
And we see what the Castrol Success Predictor has to say about the favourites' chances...
Jun 7, 2010 2:00:00 PM

Peter Pedroncelli, Goal.com Africa

Winners: Spain
Golden Boot: Fernando Torres (Spain)
Dark Horses: Ghana

Spain have grown and matured into such an incredible team over the last few years, and they certainly have the players to win a World Cup. They will want to build on their success at Euro 2008 to be the eighth team to win a FIFA World Cup, and with a great balance of players in all positions, it is certainly possible.

Torres has struggled with injuries for much of the season, but once he has recovered he does not take long to start scoring again. The Group H rivals should beware, as he is itching to get on the scoresheet for La Furia Roja, and his calm under pressure in the big matches may see him steal the topscorer title at the competition.

Ghana are an impressive outfit, and despite the absence of Michael Essien, they are set to give this competition a good go. If they make it out of a tough group, the support of the fans in South Africa is likely to give them a great deal of confidence, and perhaps that elusive semi-final spot will finally be achieved by an African side.

Castrol Football's Tournament Predictor - Where does your team's path end?

Ewan Macdonald, Goal.com International

Winners: Brazil
Golden Boot: Luis Fabiano (Brazil)
Dark Horses: Serbia

For me Brazil have individual talent but, above all, structure and discipline. This will not be a World Cup of flair and amazement, but one of effectiveness, and Dunga, for all his flaws, has equipped Brazil with precisely this attribute.

Luis Fabiano will be given several opportunities to score en route to the final and will take most of them, starting from the opening game.

Despite questionable form in recent friendlies, Serbia remain a force to be reckoned with. The core of that team is superb and should go a long way.

THE FAVOURITES
Sulmaan Ahmad, Goal.com UK

Winners: Brazil
Golden Boot: Robin van Persie (The Netherlands)
Dark Horses: Uruguay

International and club football often tend to move together in cycles. And if Spain are Barcelona - with the best players and the best style - Brazil are Inter. They have seen more attractive days, but are powerful, hard to score against, fast, and clinical in front of goal. They don't have the best coach, they haven't made the best selection, but they have a tough enough defence and good enough attackers to beat all-comers, especially as there will be unprecedented expectation on Spain, who don't have all their key players at peak fitness.

Meanwhile the Netherlands have been unfairly overlooked in the build-up to the tournament. They have an array of attacking talent, a quite easy group and a man in Robin van Persie who is very motivated (and fresh, having been injured for much of last season) to prove himself as one of the best in the world. He will be on the end of a lot of their good work and, providing they score as freely as expected, yet still get further than many perhaps realise, he could take the big prize, in spite of Torres and Villa's superior ability and Luis Fabiano likely to be on the end of a lot of Brazil's good work.

There aren't many traditional dark horses this year. The African teams' 'home advantage' may not play as big a part in assisting them as some people are expecting and honestly, it's the top half - the easy half - of the draw that is most likely to produce a surprise performer. France and Argentina have coaching issues, Germany, though still tournament experts, are not of the calibre we are used to seeing and even Fabio Capello hasn't been able to stamp out all of England's doubts. There is a window for Serbia or Uruguay, with the latter having the stronger all-round team, to cause some upsets.

How will the Group Stage go? Check out Castrol Football's 2010 FIFA World Cup Group Predictor.

Mohammed Awaad, Goal.com Arabic

Winners: Germany
Golden Boot: Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Dark Horses: Serbia

Germany are coming to the World Cup without any pressure as most people are talking about Spain, Brazil and England. This could be a very positive environment for some of the young players to progress in, given their lack of experience in this big competition. Germany have the players that can pull off a surprise and change the situation, and they also have history, which is very important in the World Cup. When I look and the other teams, they all have some weaknesses, but football is a game of 11 vs 11 and Germany win!!

Lionel Messi has a great opportunity to be the top scorer of the World Cup due to Argentina's very easy group, and this will enable him to leave the group round with a minimum of four goals, putting him right on track for the Golden Boot.

In terms of dark horses, Serbia are the strongest team out of sight, with the best defence in the championship, great midfilders and ambitious strikers... all of this will make them the dark horse.

Ceyhun Bayel, Goal.com Turkey

Winners: Italy
Golden Boot: Wayne Rooney (England)
Dark Horses: Australia

I believe in Lippi's Italy for this World Cup again. They have a really balanced team. Also, Gianluigi Buffon can be a big plus point for in this kind of tournament. They have some problems in the defensive line and also creative midfield, but in my opinion they will solve these issues with their energetic and combative midfield. In my opinion they are the complete tournament team and Lippi's tactical approach can make them successful.

England are placed in the group with Algeria, Slovenia and USA. Other than USA, the others have a weak defensive line, while USA, who I watched against Turkey, are always open to making mistakes. So this situation will allow Wayne Rooney, who is in the best form of the tournament's forwards, to score lots of goal in the group. After that stage, games will become harder and the advantage in group games will help Rooney to win the Golden Boat.

Australia have lots of players who are very good professionals and are also very strong in terms of physical attributes. They have creative, smart and passionate players like Kewell, Neill and Cahill. They want to do something unbelievable with this team in this tournament. They were also the team who arrived in South Africa earliest in order to minimise geographical problems that could undermine their success. I believe in those sporting, passionate, combative and professional Socceroos.

Francois Duchateau, Goal.com Germany

Winners: The Netherlands
Golden Boot: David Villa (Spain)
Dark Horses: Denmark & Uruguay

The Netherlands did their homework during recent tournaments and recent years. The years of learning are over, the time has come to finally show the world that beautiful football can also be successful. Already with the underdogs Feyenoord, Bert van Marwijk has proven that he can make not only a unit of a team, but also inject a winning menthality into them and a winning style of play. The athmosphere around the Dutch team is very harmonious, and with a lot of internationally experienced players like Van Bommel, hopefully Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder and Van der Vaart, South Africa can be a great experience. I have never seen an Oranje side with such self confidence.

Spain are for sure one of the favourites. They will go deep into the tournament and David Villa is an incredible goal machine, who will score seven goals to give a little preview of what Barcelona can expect in the next season from him.

With Forlan and Suarez, Uruguay finally have some special qualities in the attacking line-up that other teams will fear. They're in Group A, where the powers are equal. They will not only go into the next round, but maybe have some bigger surprises for you. Denmark had a bad run-up to the World Cup in terms of their friendly matches, but Morten Olsen has built a team of routine that could leave Japan and Cameroon behind them in Group E. With Christian Eriksen they have one of the World Cup's biggest talents in their squad. His hour could come in South Africa, just as Michael Owen had his moment in 1998.

GOLDEN BOOT CONTENDERS

Fabrizio Ponciroli - Goal.com Italy

Winners: Argentina
Golden Boot: Diego Milito (Argentina)
Dark Horses: Serbia

Maradona is not a great coach but he has a fantastic team. In defence he can count on great players like Samuel, the midfield has quality and quantity. Up front there are Messi, Milito, Aguero. The weakest point is Maradona…

Diego Milito at the moment is the best striker in the world. He is at the top of his game and he wants to prove he is the best in the world. With Messi at his side, Milito will score many goals and will have a great World Cup, winning the Ballon d'Or.

I think Serbia are a very very good team. Antic is a guru (I remember his Atletico Madrid Liga winning side well) and Serbia have a group of interesting players such as Stankovic, Zigic, Kolarov, Ivanovic, Vidic and others. Ok, it is their first appearance in the World Cup as Serbia, but the team has great quality and Group D is not impossible.

Who are your team likely to meet in the later stages of the tournament? Check out Castrol Football's 2010 FIFA World Cup Opponent Predictor.

Rahul Bali, Goal.com India

Winners: The Netherlands
Golden Boot: Luis Fabiano (Brazil)
Dark Horses: Portugal

With one of the most balanced attacking units at the World Cup, it's about time the Oranje translated their potential into success. Their philosophy of Total Football is much loved and admired by people all over the world and we already saw what the likes of Sneijder, Van Der Vaart, Robben and Kuyt can do by literally thrashing the world champions, Italy, and the World Cup finalists, France, in Euro 2008. With most of their players in good form in the build-up to the World Cup, I expect them not to falter this time around as they usually tend to.

A typical no-nonsense fox in the box who shall convert if given the ball inside the penalty area is Luis Fabiano. With creativity in the form of Kaka, Melo and Maicon around him, Fabiano will surely be amongst the goals.

With a decent defence and midfield and some world class wingers who have been in good form, Portugal can progress despite being placed in a tough group. In their attack, they are heavily reliant on CR9, but as always, they have not had a great centre-forward in recent years.

Sergio Aguilera, Goal.com Spain

Winners: Spain
Golden Boot: David Villa (Spain)
Dark Horses: USA

This is going to be the year of Spain. Despite arriving at each and every World Cup among the favourites and always failing to make it past quarter-finals, the situation seems highly different this time around for La Roja. For once, the Spanish squad reaches the World Cup as European champions and after an immaculate qualification tournament, and more importantly playing at an extraordinary level. Spain have everything in their hands to earn the trophy: an outstanding and compact group of players at the peak of their careers, great quality in all the lines, maturity, winning character, some of the best players in the world, and arguably the best game of all the competitors. It is now or never for Spain.

Facing presumably weaker rivals in the group round, David Villa is bound to finish the first phase of the competition with a bunch of goals. After that, 'El Guaje' will turn into the spearhead of Spain in the way La Roja reach the final. Also, David Villa will have to prove how right Barcelona were to spend €40 million on his services.

USA have already showed that they have a couple of surprises reserved for big tournaments. Last year in the Confederations Cup, the Americans caused several upsets (Spain included), presenting a firm and effective gameplan. If they solve their issues with their weak defensive line, the USA can make it far in the tournament, with the likes of Donovan and Buddle as stars. Also, with the exception of England and eventually Germany, the Americans could find an easy path to reach at least the quarter-finals.

THE DARK HORSES

Wout Stravers, Goal.com Netherlands

Winners: Brazil
Golden Boot: Luis Fabiano (Brazil)
Dark Horse: Mexico

In the end the Selecao will celebrate again. The number of exceptional players is high and I believe they are complementary to each other. They have the best players and I am confident in Carlos Dunga. Luis Fabiano is the ideal finisher for a team like this. It is impressive that you can have a player like Dani Alves on the bench. Argentina are great too, but their coach won't be a positive thing I'm afraid.

Luis Fabiano made sense at the Confederations Cup, and can do so again. It will be his first World Cup as THE striker of Brazil, but he will not let up, and he should get the Golden Boot.

My dark horses are Mexico. Not only because of their win against Italy, but their play against the Netherlands was not bad at all either. They have some opportunities and I think they will qualify from the difficult Group A and surprise in the knockout stages.

Impian villa

2010/06/08

EA Sports Predicts Spain to Win the World Cup

EA has used its FIFA World Cup game to play out the World Cup, and it has declared Spain the eventual champion.

It was a tense final, with five time World Cup champions Brazil looking for their sixth star, against the European champions, Spain. The action was fierce on both sides, and Brazil took an early lead on a goal from Felipe Marko. The Spaniards equalized with a shot from David Villa (his sixth of the tournament) to end the first. Then the second half belonged to Spain as their teamwork and stifling defense managed to frustrate the Brazilians. Villa scored his second in the 61st minute, while Andres Iniesta put in Spain’s 3rd,to lead the number two ranked team in the world overd the top ranked Brazilians in a memorable 3-1 final! Or at least according to the game 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

EA ran a simulation of the entire tournament, from the group stages through the finals, and Spain came out victorious. Each year, EA does a similar event for the Super Bowl, playing out the game and announcing the champion with eerily accurate results. In the seven years that the Madden franchise has run the simulation, it has predicted six correct champions, including this year’s New Orleans Saints, who were the Vegas underdogs going in.

The US begins its World Cup run this Saturday versus England, a game that EA predicts will favor England 2-1, although both teams are predicted to advance to the knock out stage where the US will lose to Germany in a shoot out. The semi-finals will see Brazil take out the English in a penalty shootout, while Spain knocks off Argentina. England then goes on to win third place with a 2-1 victory over rival Argentina.

The game also predicted that Spain’s David Villa would win the Golden Boot with 7 goals, and Brazil’s Kaka would be the Golden Ball winner.

It should be noted that in 2006, EA predicted the Czech Republic to win the Cup in a 2-1 victory over Brazil. Unfortunately, the Czech Republic failed to make it out of the first round.
