Bamboo Charcoal in Cooking
                    
         
This might sound crazy. Who would eat bamboo charcoal? Well the answer is the Japanese; and if you look a little closer at the topic of using bamboo charcoal in cooking the less crazy it will sound.         
         
Bamboo charcoal with its high density and porous structure is very different to the bamboo plant. Bamboo charcoal is rich in minerals such as potassium, calcium, sodium and iron. It is commonly used as medicine. This is well known. Less well known is the use of bamboo in cooking.         
         
         
         
You can put a slice of bamboo charcoal in rice while it is cooking. The bamboo charcoal absorbs the chlorine and other toxic substances from the water and thus improves the taste of the rice. Furthermore, the bamboo charcoal enriches the rice with extra calcium.         
         
Another use of bamboo charcoal in food preparation is to put a piece into oil before deep fat frying food. The Japanese sometimes do this before making tempura. The bamboo charcoal in the boiling oil improves the aroma of the food and makes the food crispier. It also helps to keep the oil clean. In this way bamboo charcoal can be used to extend the life of cooking fat.         
         
Bamboo charcoal is frequently used in faucet filters in Japan to purify water. It can also be put into water to give it the taste of mineral water. You need to leave the charcoal in water for 4 or 5 hours to get the full benefits of water purification through bamboo charcoal. It should be stressed that bamboo charcoal cannot make contaminated water safe in the same way as using iodine or chlorine. Rather bamboo charcoal makes clean water taste better.         
You can use bamboo charcoal in the preparation of pickles. Put a slice of bamboo charcoal in while you are pickling. When it comes time to eating the pickles you will notice that they taste better.         
         
Bamboo charcoal also works as a natural and safe deodorizer. You can put a piece of bamboo charcoal in the fridge to take away the smell of food. It also absorbs ethylene gas and keeps vegetables and fruits fresh.         
          Finally, when you have finished using a piece of bamboo charcoal you can break it up into pieces and scatter it in the garden. It will help plants and flowers to grow faster.
