KUALA LUMPUR: A 29-year-old woman was severely burned after a vengeful boyfriend allegedly locked her in a burning flat unit at Desa Rejang, Setapak Jaya, Wangsa Maju.
A neighbour reportedly saw the man enter the flat unit early Tuesday morning while his girlfriend, identified as Sarliza Saidin was still inside with her 18-month-old baby and her mother, aged between 40 and 50.
It is learnt that the he had locked the grill door from outside the unit before pouring petrol around it and igniting a fire.
A report received by the City Fire and Rescue department 1.25pm Tuesday indicated that there had been a gas explosion in the flat.
41 firefighters from Setapak, Wangsa Maju and Hang Tuah were despatched to the scene at 1.35am and managed to quell the flames by 1.58pm.
All three family members were sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) for immediate treatment.
Sarliza reportedly suffered 80% burns to her body while her baby was 50% burnt.
Her mother is also reported to have suffered 10% burns to her body.
When contacted, city CID chief Asst Comm Khairi Ahrasa confirmed that police have received a report on the crime and are investigating the fire from all angles.
"As of now, Sarliza's boyfriend is being investigated as the prime suspect in the case, with the motive being revenge.
"He will be brought in to have his statement recorded," said ACP Khairi.
