Turning to the soulful competitor, he told her: 'You are such a pro. It was so incredible - this was like a singing LESSON. Oh my God I'm so proud of you.' Mariah Carey told her Somewhere was 'my parents' song', joking 'so thanks for making me cry, yet again' - quickly insisting: 'A plus. Amazing!' And Nicki Minaj, waving her hands to suggest that the competition was all over, simply told her: 'Four words: see ya next week.' The shows music mentor Jimmy Iovine was in agreement with the four judges. 'Anyone who can take Somewhere - a song that's ingrained in everyone's head - and add your own soul and feeling to it and own it like that… Candice, you didn't win the round with that song, you won the night.'
Nicki, in a bright pink short dress, had earlier already fought back tears as she tried to explain just how inspired she was by the 22-year-old competitor - and how inspirational she feels she will be for everyone else.
After watching video of Candice going home to perform in her hometown of Helena Island in South Carolina - where the Governor of South Carolina declared it official 'Canice Glover Day' - and then her perform Emeli Sandé's Next To Me, Nicki had to choke back tears.
'That video was so emotional and so hard for me to watch. You have come out swinging in this competition - I just - am so proud of. I have to tell you that I am so proud of you.
'I mean' - and here Nicki took a long pause as she fought to regain her composure - 'Congratulations.'
This is one of the greatest thing about American Idol - that you can come from anything, from absolutely nothing, and be somebody with your talent, so Kudos to us.'
Candice insisted it was all thanks to the show.
'I used to be the most insecure person ever, and this show has helped me so much,' she insisted.
As with her other two competitors, Candice sang three songs - one picked by Iovine, one by the judges and one by the Idol production.
As well as Somewhere and Next To Me, her first song of the night was a gospel-tinged version of U2's One - a song she says she had never heard in any of its versions.
Nicki compared it to Mary J Blige's version that gives her 'chills', telling her: 'I thought, "Ain't no way that's going to touch Mary's version" - but you are on your way, you are a diva. You did that justice.
'That did not feel like American Idol - that felt like I was at your show.'
And Randy, having heard her say she'd tried out for the show twice before, told her: 'I think the third time's gonna be a charm for you. We all got lifted up here.'
Despite emerging a clear favorite, Candice was not the only one to bring the judges close to tears.
Video of 22-year-old Kree Harrison visiting her childhood home Woodville, Texas, and talking about the tragic deaths of both her parents proved too much when followed by her performing Rascal Flatts' Here Comes Goodbye.
'I can't discuss the video - the fact that you made it through that song after just seeing that video after going home and experiencing everything that you've experienced… I'm overwhelmed with emotion,' Mariah told her. 'I'm so in awe with the purity of you. There's something just so real about you.'
Keith agreed: 'It was a lot coming out of that video and going into that song. It was the perfect song for you - you sang it just right, you felt it just right. And you had me from beginning to end. God bless you.'
In her hometown trip, Kree toured the now derelict home with her sister, Laci. 'It reminds me that this is who I am, this is where have come from, and to never forget that,' Kree said.
'It's really important because it's still a piece of our parents that we can hold on to,' she said, welling up with tears and then explaining: 'I was 19 when lost my mom in an accident and we lost my dad in a plane crash when was 12.'
Her sister, weeping as she hugged her, said: 'Everything is so bitter sweet. We've definitely been through some tough things. But our parents taught us to never give up.'
Nicki later told her: 'I don't think people realize how much strength you have to have to be this young and have no parents.
'You can't underestimate the power of a true emotional trigger. When you went back home you were able to regain something that you could actually feel.
Joking about previously proposing to her and being dumped for 'some boy', Nicki added: 'Lady, I wanna just say again I am so super proud of you. This was one of your best performances because you felt every word.'
Meanwhile Randy told her: 'I'm sure Gary LeVox from Rascall Flatts is watching and going, "Oh my God!". That was unbelievably beautiful.'
Kree also sang Pink's 'Perfect', of which Keith said: 'To my ear you're a country girl and it doesn't matter what you sing. And I love that about you - I love the fact that no matter what song you sing you have such a strong signature sound. That was very apparent tonight.'
The third hopeful, Angie Miller, mostly surprised the judges by staying away from her usual spot behind the piano for two of her tunes - especially the piano-lead Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word by Elton John.
She admitted: 'I just feel like wouldn't have been able to have played it so well - learned it in time.'
Nicki, who praised her look in a skin-tight leather-looking dress, told her: 'There have been performances that you have done that have hit me in the heart and I literally go home and watch them over and over and over. This was a stellar vocal but it didn't hit me emotionally like I would have wanted it to.'
And Keith told her: 'I would have been happy for you to hold back even more. You can break people's hearts singing really gently, too. But your voice is spectacular, Angie.'
When she went uptempo with Try by Pink, the judges were more impressed.
'You have never looked so comfortable doing an uptempo song in your life,' Nicki told her. 'You believed every single word.'
Angie explained that watching the video of her hometown visit - including touring Boston after the marathon bombings - had inspired her.
'Honestly going home was amazing, it refaced me. I loved watching that
for me... i vote for Angie Miller. sebab dia macam one of a kind jugak. (among 3 voices)
bagi aku, si Candice tu so common black women voice lah. and, yang latest performance "Somewhere" tuh, memang ada WOW factor disitu, tapi aku lagi kenan Rachel (Glee) bawak lagu ni, lagi sedap n superb. and, my bet, if Unique Wade Adam (Alex Newell) yang has so-called superb black "women" voice lagi senang2 jeh beat si Candice ni.
aku suka Candice ni pon sebab perwatakan dia ala-ala Queen Latifah. muka pon sama. cam That So Raven pon ade jugak. hehe~
faveret aku dalam AI 12 ni, just Angie Miller, selain capable untuk buat original composition sendiri, her voice kinda angelic. sedap lah lullaby dia.

gelombang dia sekejap sajo. memula champion memang laku habes. sampai orang nak buat World Idol lagi, bagi dia ni join nak haposkan idol2 negara lain. tuptup, cancel world idol.
lepas dia ada masalah peribadi ke hape ntah kes dia, terus lenyap di telan jaman. hehe.
tapi aku admit, suara dia power, tapi x sedap. sekian. hahahahahah
jordin sparks sebab genre dia, yang menyebabkan dia tak popular sekarang. lagipon physically dia pon orang x kenan. sian dia.
True professionals! American Idol panel get on with the job... despite reports their contracts have not been renewed
In the music industry they always say ‘the show must go on’.
And it seemed the American Idol judges were sticking to that mantra when Randy Jackson’s imminent departure barely got a mention during Thursday's show.
Host Ryan Seacrest made a fleeting reference to Jackson’s decision to quit the singing contest at the start of the programme, saying he would be announcing which judge was on his way out.
'A little later on we’ll be revealing who is leaving our show,' he said, with a knowing look towards the music producer.
'Maybe a heads up?' he quipped as Jackson threw his hands in the air and grinned and fellow judges Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Nicki Minaj smiled nervously.
But Seacrest failed to fulfill his promise and Jackson’s announcement was never mentioned again, leaving viewers wondering whether he had run out of time or whether a deliberate decision had been made to gloss over it.
Kissing 12 years goodbye: Randy confirmed that he will be leaving the show once this season wraps
Jackson, who has been an Idol judge from the very beginning, announced that he would be leaving the show at the end of the season around two hours before Thursday’s live episode aired.
He released a statement saying: 'Yo! Yo! Yo! To put all of the speculation to rest, after 12 years of judging on American Idol, I have decided it is time to leave after this season.
'I am very proud of how we forever changed television and the music industry.
'It’s been a life changing opportunity, but I am looking forward to focusing on my company Dream Merchant 21 and other business ventures.'
The 56-year-old music mogul’s announcement came as speculation mounted that TV network Fox were planning to get rid of all four judges and their longtime executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.
Sources connected to the show told website The Wrap that Fox plans to start the show from scratch next season after a year of bad reviews and poor ratings.
'All four are gone,' the insider said. “They feel they’ve lost their core audience and they want it back.'
Despite reports to the contrary, the Wrap claims Fox is not planning to bring back former judge Jennifer Lopez to rejuvenate the judging panel.
'Oh my god!' Nicki Minaj is in shock as Kree Harrison edges out Angie Miller to join Candice Glover in American Idol final
With their tongue-lashing critiques and tense squabbles, they are very rarely lost for words.
But last night the American Idol judges were left open-mouthed when Kree Harrison was voted into the final alongside vocal powerhouse – and clear favourite - Candice Glover.
Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson got to their feet in shock as host Ryan Seacrest read out Kree’s name.
Twist of fate: Kree Harrison was just as shocked as the judges when she discovered that she had beat out Angie Miller, who was holding her, to make it to the finals
And as the 22-year-orphan stood speechless on stage, struggling to take it all in, even Nicki Minaj could be seen mouthing the words: 'Oh my god.'
Candice, 23, was the first girl to learn she had a place in next week’s live final – unsurprising news after she had blown the judges away with her strong performances week after week.
Turning away in shock, as her friends and family – and even the judges – leapt to their feet, Candice said: 'I’m not even here right now.'
But if Candice’s place in the final was a little on the predictable side, Kree’s spot turned the tables.
As Kree, from Nashville, Tennessee, stood stunned on stage, the realisation set in for Angie Miller that she was being eliminated from the show.
Candice and Kree gathered around to comfort the partially deaf 18-year-old as she struggled to contain her emotion.
'I can’t think of anyone I would rather have been in the top three with,' Candice could be overheard saying.
But as the Idol producers aired a montage of Angie’s Idol highlights, the pretty pianist from Beverly, Massachusetts, broke down in tears.
Asked to perform one final song, the visibly distraught teenager then gave a painful rendition of ‘Never Gone’ by Colton Dixon as she failed to fully regain her composure.
At the start of the show, Candice, Kree and Angie had started the night with a performance of ‘Who Says’ by Selena Gomez.
The show then aired footage of them paying a surprise visit to a high school choir and joining them on a rousing version of ‘Dance Our Tears Away’ by John De Sohn.
The live performances came from Alicia Keys, who sang Tears Always Win from hit album Girl On Fire, and former Idol runner up Lauren Alaina, who belted out her new single Barefoot and Buckwild.
Viewers were also treated to a world premiere of Mariah Carey’s new music video for her song Beautiful, which features American singer Miguel.
The seductive video sees the pop diva cavorting on a motorbike in a black bra top and skirt and cheekily dancing for Miguel in a white slip dress.
Next week, Candice and Kree will face off against one another in the live American Idol final.
Candice, from Helena Island, South Carolina, has to be favourite to win after the judges tipped as the new champion following her performances on Wednesday’s show.
Randy Jackson described her rendition of West Side Story’s ‘Somewhere’ as a 'singing lesson', while Keith Urban said: 'If you don’t want to vote for Candice, call your doctor, you probably don’t have a pulse.'
