Badminton: Men抯 doubles champs out of All-England
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: South Korea served up a surprise for this year抯 All-England in Birmingham from March 3-8 by not listing their men抯 doubles defending champions Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung as a pair for the tournament.

Only the young hotshot Yong-dae will be at Birmingham to play in two events..

He will forge a scratch partnership with Shin Baek-cheol in the men抯 doubles and team up with his Beijing Olympic Games gold medallist partner Lee Hyo-jung in the mixed doubles.

This is good news for the other men抯 doubles pairs as the formidable Yong-dae-Jae-sung would have clearly been the red-hot favourites to defend their title.

Now, the battle will be among Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif; Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan; and the Danish pairs of Lars Passke-Jonas Rasmussen and Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen.

But one should never underestimate the talented Yong-dae, who can partner anyone and still make life difficult for their opponents.

In fact, Yong-dae-Baek-cheol could add an element of excitement by being the darkhorses in the third-leg of the Super Series.

Badminton World Federation sport manager M. Venugopal confirmed yesterday that South Korea did not enter Jae-sung for the tournament.

揝outh Korea have named four men抯 pairs for the All-England. There are no other big names missing from the cast,

Julia in no hurry to take over number one spot

KUALA LUMPUR: National women抯 singles shuttler Julia Wong is in no hurry to take over the number one spot from seasoned campaigner Wong Mew Choo.

The 21-year-old Julia has other targets to aim for this year.

In the absence of Mew Choo, who is recovering from knee and elbow injuries, it will be up to Julia to keep the Malaysian flag flying high in the women抯 singles event on the international front.

Julia has been named for the German Open in Mulheim from Feb 24-March 1 and the All-England from March 3-8 with youngster Lydia Cheah.

Julia, the world No. 16 and who is only four rungs below Mew Choo, stands a better chance of making an impact in the German Open.

Julia said that she was more focused on realising her dream to win her first Open title.

揑 have not reached the same standard as Mew Choo yet. I am not thinking of becoming the national number one. I have not even won my first Open title,

so da confirm la jae sung tak join AE kan...news yg ni lak ambik kat Badzine..

KOREA - Park and Jung to miss European Tour

The Badminton Korea Association issued a news release today confirming that Jung Jae Sung's military service, which commenced today, would keep him from participating in the German, Swiss, and All England Opens.

Jung will be reunited with partner Lee Yong Dae to defend their Badminton Asia Championship title in April at home in Suwon, Korea. Lee is expected to continue to play in Europe, however, with partner Lee Hyo Jung in the mixed doubles.

In a surprising addition to the statement, the release mentioned Park Sung Hwan was to begin four weeks of military training on the same day. Men in Korea are normally required to perform 26 months of military service but many athletes have received exemptions based on exceptional performances, including Olympic medals or Asian Games gold.

Jung, who turned 26 last year, had achieved bronze and silver in the Asian Games and had missed out on the medals in Beijing and had to start within the year. For the next two years, he will play badminton domestically for the military team, known as Sangmu, and will be permitted to train and attend tournaments with the national team, thus continuing his partnership with Lee Yong Dae.

No details are given in the release about the nature of military service in the case of Park Sung Hwan, who was not facing a deadline like Jung. However, the only active players who have earned exemptions are Hwang Ji Man and Lee Yong Dae.
