LOCAL HEROES: Fizz (left) with Zamarul Hisyam who plays Roslan in 'Roh Kembali'
ACTOR Fizz Fairuz, whose real name is Fairuz Zainal Abidin, is an odd character, considering the business he's in.
Rather than chasing glamour and getting high on popularity like many of his peers, he intentionally only accepts roles that are usually hard to play emotionally and physically, with a little note of wickedness in the character.
“I like to be challenged, it gives me satisfaction,” he said in a phone interview. “So when I get a challenging role to play, and I give it my best, that’s when I am most satisfied. I’m just content knowing that at the end of the day, people that I work with are pleased with my performance and therefore, the pay that I get is justified.
"As an actor, I’d be happy that I’m paid based on my work and not on popularity.”
Fizz has definitely made a mark in the local entertainment industry. So much so that he was dubbed "the next Rosyam Noor".
The 31-year-old has acted in numerous productions, but it was his stint as Aidil in TV3’s drama series Nur Kasih that catapulted him to fame.
His character, although a supporting role, is a pious person, a good son, brother and friend. But his patience gets tested when his ill father marries the girl of his dreams to his younger brother instead.
Of course, the character is not all that good but Aidil’s mannerisms while containing his frustration was well played by Fizz, so much so that the actor is now adored by many, female fans especially, for the role. He became what we can call 'a mother-in-law’s numero uno choice' for her daughter.
After such an impact, Fizz will definitely raise eyebrows with his role in Roh Kembali, TV3's latest thriller under the Seram slot, which previously aired creepy tales such as Kekasihku Seru, Tower 13 and Penunggu Gunung Raya.
In Roh Kembali, Fizz plays the lead Zaidi, a good man with a wife and son. But what his family and friends don’t know is that Zaidi is actually a gangster. Although he lives in luxury, Zaidi is not at peace. And what bothers him the most is that he is being haunted by two ghosts, his boss Tauke Boon’s dead mistress Lilian and his neighbour Roslan.
“It was suggested that Zaidi killed Lilian. As for Roslan, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Zaidi was in a fight, and the bullet aimed at him killed Roslan instead. Feeling remorse and guilt-ridden, my character Zaidi hallucinates, seeing the ghosts.”
Since this is a thriller, we asked if Fizz was spooked in anytime during the making.
“I wasn’t afraid, I was more tired,” said the Pahang-born actor matter-of-factly. “The role was a bit difficult to play. Since my character was hallucinating most of the time, I had to psych myself into doing so many things alone. It was a bit hard to talk to yourself, scream and run as if something is chasing after you, hitting you and so on. But I gave my all, the rest is up to the audience to judge.”
Since Fizz acted in other scary movies like Orang Minyak and TV serial Kekasihku Seru to name a few, we couldn’t help but to wonder if Fizz has had any true, interesting and nerve-wrecking stories to share.
“Alhamdulillah, I’ve not encountered any actual ghosts yet,” he said. “Actually however, I am a descendent of a family of Pawang. My grandfather had the ‘gift’ and he wa ssupposed to pass the knowledge, or saka as many call it, on to my late father. Thankfully, my father declined the offer.”
Fizz added that Roh Kembali is more of a legal drama than the supernatural.
“He was involved in a crime and was going to pay for his wrongdoings. He is being investigated and his wife has hired a good lawyer to defend him. But at the same time, he has to deal with the spirits only he can see, and he is tormented by them.”
Besides Fizz, the 13-episode thriller Roh Kembali, which premiered yesterday, also stars renowned actors such as Lisdawati, Zamarul Hisyam, Rozie Rashid, Razak Ahmad and Sheila Rusly.

Fizz added that besides Roh Kembali, his schedule is busy with other shows as well.
“I am currently doing another drama series titled Hari Yang Ke-21. This is a very interesting show as it tackles the kidnapping of a child and what the child has to go through. I'm playing the guy who tortured, raped and does everything imaginable a bad guy would do to his helpless prey.
“We are in our third day of shooting and so far, I find it very interesting. This is a good drama and I do hope many people will watch it when it’s aired on TV soon.
“Other than that, I’ll be acting in another TV drama which tells a story of a football fan, especially created for the World Cup. We’ll start shooting at the end of the month.
“Besides that, I’ll start shooting for Nur Kasih the movie this June, so watch out for that,” said Fizz.
While the lad is bubbly when talking about his craft, Fizz however, shied away from talking about his personal life. Almost everybody knows that Fizz is currently dating fellow actress Almy Nadia, and only recently announced they’ve been a couple for three years.
But when asked about marriage, Fizz reluctantly said, “I don’t want to comment about this matter.” But after a little persuasion, Fizz added, “God willing, we will marry but as of now, we don’t know yet.”
As we wait for the good news with nasi minyak on the platter, fans of Fizz can tune in to TV3 Seram slot every Thursday, at 9.30pm. |
