Clearing the final hurdle! Candice Glover remains favourite after outshining Kree Harrison in American Idol final
For the next American Idol, it is all now a waiting game.
Finalists Candice Glover and Kree Harrison performed their final three songs on Wednesday night - and have 24-hours to nervously wait the result.
After a tough season, the final two - the first all female final since season 3 - had a relatively low key night full of gentle ballads as their last bid to sway viewers to vote for them.
But while judge Randy Jackson insisted that 'Dude this is so close', the judges once again seemed to favor 23-year-old soulful powerhouse Candice.
'You just shot this whole night to another level,' Randy said excitedly after she once again sang Ben E King's I Who Have Nothing, her favorite song from the season. 'It's about singing - and baby you've got it ALL.'
Mariah Carey was equally impressed, insisting: 'I know I'm going to be listening to you for years to come, God bless you baby.
'What you have is the ability - the innate ability - to take any song and turn it into a vehicle for that amazing voice.'
Nicki Minaj, meanwhile, teased Candice 'for showing your legs tonight for the first time' that season as she wore a short black dress, but insisted she was a 'superstar' who 'commands the stage' even though there were 7,000 people in the audience and millions watching at home.
'Oh my gosh - it's just crazy. You're such a powerhouse singer,' Keith Urban told her. 'That song is like a planet exploding to life.'
Host Ryan Seacrest had billed the final as 'the battle of country versus soul', then joked: 'Or, as Nicki would say, Kreedom against Candy Girl.'
Mariah insisted she was 'blown away' by both girls. 'This talent is so magnificent - it's of a level that's just mind boggling,' she insisted.
The pair started off the evening singing songs chosen by Simon Fuller - Sarah McLachlan's Angel for Kree and Adele's Chasing Pavements for Candice.
Randy questioned Fuller's choices, saying they 'were both a little sleepy' and hardly helped the women get off to a good start.
'But I have to give the edge on round one to Candice,' he said. 'At least she took the song and tried to make more of it.'
Next, they sang songs written for them as singles to release if they win - Kree having a power ballad called All Cried Out, while Candice, backed by strings, also had a rousing ballad, this one called I Am Beautiful.
Nicki praised Kree's 'composure' while Keith said the performances proved they were 'both soul singers'. Of Candice's song, he quipped: 'It fits her like a Glover.'
Next, they sang their favorite songs from the season. Before Candice's show-stopping reprisal of I Who Have Nothing, Kree, now in a floor-length red dress, sang Up To The Mountain by Patty Griffin.
'That right there is a winning performance,' Randy told her. 'That's your best performance of the night.'
Keith praised her 'spirituality and soulfulness', while Nicki said: 'I think all three of your performances tonight showcased your beautiful voice and your beautiful soul.'
Viewers have four hours after the show to vote, with the decision to be announced on a two hour special Thursday.
Despite the tension, Kree insisted her aim was to 'just be in the moment', explaining: 'Whatever happens, it's tomorrow - tonight we are just trying to have fun and sing our best for y'all.'
One song at a time,' Candice agreed.
The night also featured Carly Rae Jepsen - a Canadian Idol finalist - who finally performed a song that viewers had helped write lyrics and key elements throughout the season.
The song, Take a Picture, had Carly Rae - wearing tiny black shorts, a hat and yellow jacket - surrounded by pretend photographers onstage as she sang: 'I took a picture of you taking a picture of me.'

Only one could be crowned the winner of American Idol Season 12.
But as Candice Glover and Kree Harrison arrived to walk the red carpet ahead of tonight's nail biting live show they hid their nerves beneath an outer aura of calm.
The ladies arrived at the L.A. Live Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California but it almost turned into a fash-off instead of a sing off when they sported similar looks.
The contestants wore navy blue gowns on the red carpet as they posed for pictures, and their lookalike appearances were somewhat representative of how close the call was between who will win.
Candice, 23, who was said to be the slight favourite after her performance on Wednesday night, rocked up in a number with sparkly lace detail around the bust and a gathered material at the waist.
Meanwhile Kree, 22, went for a simpler version, wrapping a black leather sash around her waist.

With former judge Jennifer Lopez scheduled to make a performance comeback later in the show, it was up to Mariah Carey to 'really make the show her own,' as they often tell the contestants.
Carey stood tall in an astonishingly decadent fishtail dress replete with crystals, maribou feathers and was herself dripping in jewels.
Realising perhaps that dancing isn't her strongest point, the 43-year-old dispensed with any gimmicks and just stood still save for a few hand moments as she slammed straight into her incredible back catalogue.
Congrats kak Candice. Dia memang cemerlang dari episod pertama sampai la finale. She's clearly the best of the bunch. Harap2 dia success mcm Kelly, Carrie, Adam.
