Chong Wei vows to bury the ghost of 2000
By RAJES PAUL
KUALA LUMPUR: Lee Chong Wei was not in the team when Malaysia last hosted the Thomas Cup Finals in 2000. He was among the spectators in the stands at the Putra Stadium and he remembers the taunts, jeers and boos from the fans for the team who failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
The failure also led several key Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) office bearers to quit their posts.
Chong Wei has vowed to prevent a repeat of such an atmosphere in the Finals this time at the same venue. He will play at first singles for the first time in a team event at home.
“I was a junior player at that time. I still remember how angry the fans were. They showed their displeasure when the team lost and said things that did not sound good,” said Chong Wei, who is the skipper of the team.
“As a player, it would have been very demoralising. I do not want my team to go through this.”
The others in the team are Wong Choong Hann, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Tan Chun Seang, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How.
“I hope that the fans will support us through thick and thin. I can give an assurance that we will do our best to make our supporters proud. But if we still lose, I hope the fans will not run us down,” said Chong Wei.
The world No. 1 and All-England champion, who is unbeaten thus far this year, is confident that the team will bring cheers to Malaysia.
“We are feeling the excitement of the Thomas Cup Finals. The mood and morale of the players are high after going through the motivation camp and simulation exercises recently,” said Chong Wei.
“Choong Hann’s presence is great for the team. He is the most experienced player and it is good for the team that he has returned to lend a hand. We promise to go all out and the fans can be rest assured that we will not give up without a fight.”
Chong Wei has a personal goal too – to maintain his unbeaten run in the Finals.
It will be his fourth appearance in the Finals since 2004 in Jakarta. At the last edition, also in Jakarta, Chong Wei won all his matches, including victory over China’s Lin Dan in the semi-final tie in which Malaysia lost 2-3.
“I will be playing as the first singles for the third time but first at home,” he said.
“This is a role that I am quite used to. I won all my matches at the last Finals and I hope to do the same this time. I know the importance of winning the first point. There will be pressure but I hope to overcome it. The race is quite open this time. China have the most balanced team but everyone else has a shot at winning too. I hope we will deliver.”
Chong Wei’s counterparts at first singles in teams of the other top contenders are Lin Dan (China), Peter-Gade Christensen (Denmark), Park Sung-hwan (South Korea) and Taufik Hidayat (Indonesia). He will also have to brace himself to face All-England runner-up Kenichi Tago of Japan in a group tie.
Yesterday, Chong Wei and his team-mates together with the Uber Cup squad were treated to lunch by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

Players set to train behind closed doors at Putra Stadium
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian players are set to train in isolation at the Putra Stadium in the final week before the start of the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals following the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) oversight in booking the hall in advance.
The arrangement now is for the players to train at the competition venue from May 3. The Finals begin on May 9 and the foreign teams are expected to train at the stadium at least three days before the start of the competition.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek admitted that it was a painful lesson for the hosts after their failure to book the venue early for training.
“We were unable to take full advantage despite being the hosts. This is a lesson for all of us here,” said Shabery.
“But it is still not too late to capitalise on the perks that come as being the hosts.
“We will accommodate the coaches if they want to hold closed door training for the Malaysian players at the venue, especially after the arrival of the foreign teams.”
The foreign teams will arrive in batches from May 5.

Pei Tty believes weakened Uber Cup team can still make semis
KUALA LUMPUR: Two comrades are down but skipper Wong Pei Tty believes that the Uber Cup team can still win battles. And the doubles specialist is cajoling her team-mates to believe in themselves to make at least a semi-final breakthrough.
Malaysia have only reached the quarter-finals twice previously. The team now are in better stature, especially after winning the SEA Games gold medal in Laos last year but unfortunately, injuries to singles shuttlers Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah have diluted their strength.
Both are not fit to play and the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are waiting for the green light from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to replace them with Sannatasah Saniru and Sonia Cheah.
The others in the team are Wong Mew Choo, Tee Jing Yi, Chin Eei Hui, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo and Ng Hui Lin-Goh Liu Ying.
But Pei Tty said that their semi-final mission remained the same even though they will be challenging with a weaker side.
“For now, it may show that the injury problems have made it much more tougher for the team. But it has changed nothing as far as our determination to do well at home is concerned,” she said.
“I believe that our team can still make the semi-finals.
“We hope that the draw for the quarter-final will be favourable to us.
“All the players must not give up and if we adopt this attitude, we can go far.”
Team manager Datuk Sayed Abu Bakar Abdullah reminded the team of their heroics at the SEA Games.
“They were not expected to win against heavy favourites Indonesia (in the team final) but they pulled off the biggest surprise by beating the defending champions,” said Sayed, who was also the team manager at the Laos Games.
“We will be expecting the same fighting spirit from them in the Uber Cup Finals.”
Malaysia are in Group A with defending champions China and the United States. The top two teams in the four-group preliminaries advance to the quarter-finals. A fresh draw will be conducted for the knockout stage.

Throw your full support behind home team, says Shabery
KUALA LUMPUR: For tennis is Wimbledon. For football is World Cup. And for badminton, it has to be the Thomas Cup Finals as far as Malaysia are concerned.
And Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek has made a clarion call to home fans to make a beeline to the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil to throw in support.
“Fans aboard scramble to see world-class actions, especially when it comes to Wimbledon or US Masters (golf). They value and root for their home stars. I hope our fans will do the same. Tickets are affordable,” he said.
“All the players here have sacrificed so much by training hard, watching their diet and keeping fit. At least, as their fans, we can go out there and show our support for all their efforts.”
Shabery continued to show his support for the team yesterday when he treated them to lunch after having a one-hour closed door session with the players.
“This is another step towards strengthening team unity and motivating the players,” he said.
“I wanted them to know that many of us are here to support them. I hope that the Thomas and Uber Cup squads will do the country proud by achieving good results.”
Meanwhile, tickets are now being sold at the Putra Stadium and for online purchases, fans can log on to www.ticketpro.com.my.
