Badminton: Malaysia's World No. 1 eyes historic 3rd Indon title
PETALING JAYA: The absence of the Chinese shuttlers will make it easier for world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei to secure a historic hat-trick of Indonesian Open titles in his badminton career later this month.
The Chinese squad led by Olympic champion Lin Dan will be skipping the Singapore Open next week and the subsequent Indonesian leg of the Super Series due to their commitments in the national league back home.
Chong Wei, the reigning All-England champion, has been undefeated in the Super Series circuit so far this year. He has won the Malaysian and Korean Opens earlier this year and should make the final in Indonesia if he plays to his true abilities.
He opens his campaign against Indonesian youngster Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka and plays either German Marc Zwiebler or Dane Hans-Kristian Vittinghus in the second round.
Smashing time ahead: Lee Chong Wei has a great chance to win the Indonesian Open again.
A re-match of the All-England final against Kenichi Tago looms in the last eight but Chong Wei should be able to clear the Japanese hurdle.
Chong Wei will likely be taking on Thai fourth seed Boonsak Ponsana or Indonesian seventh seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro for a place in the final but both rivals will be no match if the Malaysian is on form on that day.
Indonesians Simon Santoso and Taufik Hidayat are in the bottom half of the draw along with Dane Jan Jorgensen. Becoming an Indonesian Open title-winner is always an impressive record to keep in the resume of a top professional player and singles coach Misbun Sidek believes it will be a boost to Chong Wei’s morale ahead of the World Championships in Paris in August if he retains the prestigious title. Chong Wei defeated Taufik in the final last year. He claimed his first Indonesian Open title after beating Bao Chunlai in the final of the 2007 edition.
“Chong Wei will be hoping to reach the World Championships final for the first time and it will be a good confidence booster if he lives up to his billing in Singapore and Indonesia.
“But it’s also important that he stays wary of everyone. His game is studied by everyone so it is not easy to maintain his status,” he said.
Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Wong Choong Hann will be hard-pressed to survive the early rounds.
Hafiz has a tough first-round hurdle against Jorgensen while Choong Hann is slated to play Boonsak if he reaches the second round.
On the contrary, it will be harder for the world No. 1 doubles pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to follow in Chong Wei’s footsteps as world and Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan have confirmed their participation.
With China’s world champions Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun as notable absentees, second seeded Markis-Hendra have emerged as the favourite to win their home Open.
Kien Keat-Boon Heong face Indonesian pair Candra Wijaya-Luluk Hadiyanto in the first round.
Korean pairs Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong and Shin Baek-cheol-Kim Ki-jung are also in the top half of the draw along with Malaysian veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and could derail Kien Keat-Boon Heong’s hopes of reaching the final.
Sung-hyun-Yeon-seong defeated Kien Keat-Boon Heong in this year’s Swiss Open final in March.
Back-up pair Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How have a first round match-up against Indonesians Muhamad Ahsan-Bona Septano.
Top women singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo and the doubles pairing of Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty are not taking part this year.
Defending champions Eei Hui-Pei Tty pulled out in order to give time for the latter to fully recover from a nagging knee injury before the world meet.
