Cycling: Azizul now aims for Olympics
By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: Track cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang, bolstered by his gold medal-winning performance in the Asian Championships in Thailand recently, has turned his attention to winning a ticket to the Beijing Olympics.
| Azizul: At the moment, the Asian champion抯 target is to win a gold medal in the Korat SEA Games.
|
As the continental winner of the keirin event, Azizul gets an automatic berth to compete in the World Championships in Manchester in March. The world meet is an Olympic qualification event.
In the Asian Championships, Azizul beat a class field, which included Japan's Olympic team sprint silver medal duo of Toshiyaki Fushimi and Masaki Inoue and Asian Games gold medallist Kang Dong-jin of South Korea.
The efforts speak volume of his abilities to make his dream come true.
Azizul has completed his gold medal collection in both junior and senior categories at the Asian level but the Terengganu-born lad, who left yesterday for Melbourne to resume training under Australian coach John Beasley, remains level headed.
揗y immediate task is to prepare for the SEA Games and I hope to make a golden debut in Thailand, |

Cycling: Ministry in charge of LTdL, says Azalina
| At the helm: This year抯 Tour of Langkawi was organised by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF). Next year, the Youth and Sports Ministry will take over the task.
|
KUALA LUMPUR: The Tour of Langkawi (LTdL) cycling championships will be held again next year.
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said in a statement yesterday said the Cabinet had given the approval for the Tour to be held and it would be managed by an organising committee from the ministry, unlike this year when the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) took the task.
Azalina will be the advisor to the event while Datuk Mahmud Nik Yusof has been appointed as the chairman of the organising committee.
She added that MNCF vice-president Datuk Naim Mohamed had been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Tour.
MNCF organised the championships this year after the government bought out the Tour from troubled previous organisers First Cartel Sdn Bhd |

Malaysian cyclists expected to win more than four gold medals in Thailand
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia enjoyed one of their best outings in SEA Games cycling when they returned from Manila two years ago with four gold medals.
And the challenge for the 24-member team to the Games in Korat in December is to achieve better results.
A total of 14 gold medals are at stake and 10 of them will be from track events, which will be held at a newly built anti-slip velodrome. The individual time trial and massed start road races will be held in Nakhon Ratchasima.
The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) deputy president, Datuk Mohd Naim, said: 揃ased on the performances of the cyclists in the recent Asian Championships in Bangkok, we should win more than four gold medals.
揑 am optimistic that we can get at least five gold medals. This time, we can expect victories from both the track and road cyclists. |

Pereiro finally gets his hands on the yellow jersey
MADRID: Spaniard Oscar Pereiro finally got his hands on the 2006 Tour de France winner抯 yellow jersey at a special ceremony in Madrid on Monday.
Fifteen months after the race finished, the 30-year-old was officially recognised the winner after American Floyd Landis had been stripped of victory for testing positive for synthetic testosterone.
揥e all wanted this story to come to an end, the wait was interminable, very frustrating and at times I thought the Tour de France had something personal against me, |

Asia di Cheras, semalam. Gambar kecil: Pelumba
wanita negara, Fatehah Mustapha turut meraih
Satu lagi pingat perak Malaysia semalam disumbang trio acara pecut berpasukan lelaki, Mohd. Junaidi Nasir, Mohd. Rizal Tisin dan Md. Edrus Md. Yunos.
