TODAY IN HISTORY - NASA created
On this day in 1958, the U.S. Congress passes legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a civilian agency responsible for coordinating America's activities in space. NASA has since sponsored space expeditions, both human and mechanical, that have yielded vital information about the solar system and universe. It has also launched numerous earth-orbiting satellites that have been instrumental in everything from weather forecasting to navigation to global communications.
NASA was created in response to the Soviet Union's October 4, 1957 launch of its first satellite, Sputnik I. The 183-pound, basketball-sized satellite orbited the earth in 98 minutes. The Sputnik launch caught Americans by surprise and sparked fears that the Soviets might also be capable of sending missiles with nuclear weapons from Europe to America. The United States prided itself on being at the forefront of technology, and, embarrassed, immediately began developing a response, signaling the start of the U.S.-Soviet space race.
On November 3, 1957, the Soviets launched Sputnik II, which carried a dog named Laika. In December, America attempted to launch a satellite of its own, called Vanguard, but it exploded shortly after takeoff. On January 31, 1958, things went better with Explorer I, the first U.S. satellite to successfully orbit the earth. In July of that year, Congress passed legislation officially establishing NASA from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and other government agencies, and confirming the country's commitment to winning the space race. In May 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared that America should put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. On July 20, 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 mission achieved that goal and made history when astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon, saying "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
NASA has continued to make great advances in space exploration since the first moonwalk, including playing a major part in the construction of the International Space Station. The agency has also suffered tragic setbacks, however, such as the disasters that killed the crews of the Challenger space shuttle in 1986 and the Columbia space shuttle in 2003. In 2004, President George Bush challenged NASA to return to the moon by 2020 and establish "an extended human presence" there that could serve as a launching point for "human missions to Mars and to worlds beyond."

TODAY IN HISTORY - The Sound Of The "Marseillaise"
"Allons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivé. Contre nous de la tyrannie l′étendant sanglant est levé."
"Let’s go, children of the nation, the glory day has arrived. The bloody tyranny which we were subjected to has fallen."
At this time, the revolution was in full swing in France. Kings Louis XV and XVI had brought their country to ruin. The people were fed up of suffering and they rebelled against their rulers.
The neighboring countries did not want to wait for the revolution to spread to their territories and declared war on France. Now, the revolution was fighting on two fronts against the foreign powers and the armies defending the Kingdom of France.
On July 30, 1792, revolutionary troops marched from Marseilles to Paris singing a war song. From this day forward, it has been known as "The Marseillaise."
In 1795, the battle song of the revolution became France’s national anthem. It survived the revolution, it survived the empires of the Napoleon Emperors, the restoration, four republics and two world wars. The fifth republic has anchored it into constitutional law. Article two of the 1958 constitution states that the Marseillaise is the French national anthem.
It is an expression of French national pride, even though modern-day French citizens are extremely critical of the text.
"The music is very exciting, but the text is terrible. The words are bloody. It is a crime to use such words," said Hélène Butler, who is responsible for supporting French businesses in Germany. She would like to see the Marseillaise adapted to reflect contemporary times. "The Marseillaise was written in wartime, which legitimates it. I would change just a few words."
Whether the words that Madame Butler so dislikes are public property or texted by composers cannot be proven. The melody for the Marseillaise was definitely written by Claude-Joseph Rouget de Lisle.
At the time, the amateur musician was captain of a military unit in Strasbourg. The mayor commissioned him to write it. He wanted to offer official visitors to Strasbourg something special. The song was a major success and printed copies of it were distributed as far as Marseilles. The unit of volunteers used it as a marching song and sang it as they marched into Paris.
Ironically, Rouget de Lisle was not a supporter of the French revolution. On the contrary, he was a royalist. The person who wrote the music for the revolution hymn only narrowly escaped execution on the guillotine a short time later.
Management consultant Butler’s ancestors also lost their lives on the guillotine. Yet, despite this, she can identify with the prevailing mood at that time: "François Mitterand said: 'Il reste encore la bastille à prendre.' That means the Bastille is a symbol for something that must be fought. And there are still a great many problems that people have to agree on in order to get rid of bad things."
The Marseillaise is dedicated to all the people who have the courage to stand up and fight against injustice.

14 tahun lalu, dalam Berita Harian bertarikh 30 Julai 1999:-
Date: 30-07-1999
Author: Ahmad Khawari Isa
PERSATUAN Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM) semalam mengumumkan matlamat terbesar
pernah mereka impikan - memastikan skuad kebangsaan berjaya layak ke Piala
Dunia 2014.
diumumkan, empat bulan lagi.
mempengerusikan mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Teknikal FAM, petang semalam.
umur kebangsaan mula menghasilkan keputusan memberangsangkan setiap kali

Sumber: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Th ... national_Flight_311
Thai Airways International Flight 311 was a flight from Bangkok, Thailand's Don Mueang International Airport to Kathmandu, Nepal's Tribhuvan International Airport. On 31 July 1992, an A310-304 on the route, registration HS-TID, crashed on approach to Tribhuvan. All 113 on board were killed.
Accident
Flight 311 departed Don Mueang at 10:30 AM local time. After crossing into Nepalese airspace the pilots contacted air traffic control and were cleared to an instrument approach from the south called the "Sierra VOR Circling Approach" for Runway 20. Nepalese ATC at the time was not equipped with radar.
Shortly after reporting the Sierra fix ten miles south of the Kathmandu VOR, the aircraft called ATC asking for a diversion to Calcutta, India because of a "technical problem"; before ATC could reply, the flight rescinded their previous transmission. The flight was then cleared for a straight-in Sierra approach to Runway 02 and told to report leaving 9,500 feet. The captain asked numerous times for the winds and visibility at the airport but ATC merely told him that Runway 02 was available.
A number of frustrating and misleading communications (due partly to language problems and partly to the inexperience of the air traffic controller, who was a trainee with only nine months on the job) ensued between air traffic control and the pilots regarding Flight 311's altitude and distance from the airport. The captain asked four times for permission to turn left, but after receiving no firm reply to his requests he announced that he was turning right and climbed the aircraft to flight level 200. The controller handling Flight 311 assumed from the flight's transmissions that the aircraft had called off the approach and was turning to the south, and he therefore cleared the aircraft to 11,500 feet, an altitude that would have been safe in the area south of the airport. The flight descended back to 11,500 feet, went through a 360 degree turn, passed over the airport northbound, and crashed on a steep rock face in a remote area of the Langtang National Park at an altitude of 11,500 feet.
Investigation
Investigators from the Nepalese aviation authority, Airbus Industrie, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (which assisted with technical details) determined that the aircraft had experienced a minor fault in the workings of the inboard trailing flaps just after the aircraft reached the Sierra reporting fix. Concerned that the complex approach into Kathmandu in instrument conditions would be difficult with malfunctioning flaps and frustrated by ATC and his first officer's inconclusive and weak answers to his questions, the captain decided to divert to Calcutta. The flaps suddenly began to work properly, but the captain was forced to resolve more aspects of the difficult approach himself due to his first officer's lack of initiative. Only after numerous extremely frustrating exchanges with ATC was the captain able to obtain adequate weather information for the airport, but by that time he had overflown Kathmandu and the aircraft was headed towards the Himalayas.
The Nepalese authorities found that the probable causes of the accident were the captain's and controller's loss of situational awareness; language and technical problems causing the captain to experience frustration and a high workload; the first officer's lack of initiative and inconclusive answers to the captain's questions; the air traffic controller's inexperience, poor grasp of English, and reluctance to interfere with what he saw as piloting matters such as terrain separation; poor supervision of the inexperienced air traffic controller; Thai Airways International's failure to provide simulator training for the complex Kathmandu approach to its pilots; and improper use of the aircraft's flight management system.

Jul 31, 1975:
Jimmy Hoffa vanishes
http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/jimmy-hoffa-vanishes
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Hoffa
Teamsters Union president Jimmy Hoffa is reported missing in Detroit, Michigan. He was last seen alive in a parking lot outside the Machus Red Fox restaurant the previous afternoon. To this day, Hoffa's fate remains a mystery, although many believe that he was murdered by organized crime figures.
By the time of his disappearance, Hoffa had a long and murky career in union politics. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he became the main focus of government investigations into corruption. In 1962, Hoffa faced misdemeanor charges in Tennessee. He managed to get a mistrial but was convicted two years later for obstruction of justice by tampering with the jury, receiving an eight-year sentence.
In Chicago, Hoffa was tried for fraud in handling Teamster pension funds, convicted, and sentenced to five years in prison. That sentence was commuted by President Richard Nixon in 1971, and despite his criminal record, Hoffa remained a key Teamster figure until his disappearance.
All types of theories have circulated about what became of him. One popular scenario had Hoffa buried beneath a football field at the Meadowlands complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. One man even claimed credit for his murder in the mid-1980s, saying that he had dumped Hoffa's body in the Au Sable River after killing him. Authorities have never been able to confirm what really happened to Hoffa. He was declared legally dead in 1982.
