Cricket: Faris, Shafiq guide Malaysia
A 52-run opening partnership between Faris Almas-Lee and Shafiq Sharif and aggressive batting by the middle order paved the way for Malaysia抯 seven-wicket win over Hong Kong in the ACC Under-19 Elite Cup at the Selangor Turf Club ground on Thursday.
Faris, the team vice-captain, knocked 38 runs which included two boundaries off 47 balls, and wicketkeeper Shafiq contributed 19 as the duo punished the Hong Kong seamers after a cautious start. Shafiq was first to go, dismissed lbw off Nadeem Ahmed with the score at 52.
Faizal Abu Hassan (17), batting at No 3, plodded on together with Faris and the duo took control of the match despite the pressure. Fariz, who plundered 46 runs against Kuwait on Thursday, was simply awesome before making the exit with the score at 83 for two, still needing 10 runs for victory. Unfortunately Faizal was next to go when he was caught at point by Sajid Khan off Zafaran Ali.
Skipper Faiz Mohamed Noor and Aminuddin Ramly took Malaysia through with singles.
Hong Kong had earlier scored 139 runs in 39 overs after almost two and a half hours of play was lost to the first interruption by rain at 11.30am resulting in 11 overs wasted and only resumed at 2pm. However, Malaysia were 20 runs up when rain once again interrupted play and upon resumption at 5pm were set a revised target of 93 runs for victory in 23 overs which they gleefully reached for the loss of three wickets.
In another match, defending champions Nepal and Thailand took a point each when the match at Club Aman was abandoned after only 14 overs bowled. The Thais were 29-1 when rain stopped play.
Today: Oman v UAE (STC), Hong Kong v Afghanistan (Kinrara Cricket Academy); Qatar v Kuwait (Bayuemas Oval); Thailand v Singapore (Club Aman). |

England抯 Ravi-Broad in record stand
MANCHESTER: An England record eighth-wicket stand by youngsters Ravi Bopara and Stuart Broad clinched an unlikely victory over India in the fourth one-day international at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Bopara, 22, and Broad, 21, shared an unbroken alliance of 99 as England recovered from the depths of 114 for seven to reach their target of 213 with three wickets and 12 balls to spare.
The calm Bopara hit 43 not out while man of the match Broad was unbeaten on 45 as the home side took a 3-1 lead in the seven-match series.

Cricket: India win by 38 runs
LEEDS (England): India won the fifth one-day international at Headingley yesterday by 38 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method and reduced England抯 lead in the seven-match series to 3-2.

England, initially chasing 325 to win, lost three wickets for seven runs in 13 balls, including Kevin Pietersen for nought, as they slumped to 104 for four.

India's victory reduced England's lead in the seven-match series to 3-2.

Cricket: Pakistan crush Kenya
NAIROBI: Pakistan beat Kenya by eight wickets to end the hosts miserable run in the four-nation Twenty20 international tournament at the Nairobi Gymkhana club on Tuesday.
Only three Kenyan batsmen reached double figures after the Pakistan pace and spin attack flayed their batting line-up before they were bundled out for a humiliating 93 after winning the toss.
David Obuya hit Shoaib Akhtar for four in the second ball of the first over but the Pakistani paceman had the last laugh when he removed the opener and his partner Jimmy Kamande with only seven runs on the board.
The introduction of spin accelerated Kenya抯 steady decline with experienced Younis Khan playing a match-winning role by snapping up three wickets for 18 in a mean 3.4 over spell.
Abdur Rehman added two more wickets including the scalp of stand-in captain Thomas Odoyo for five and Tony Suji for four to reduce the hosts to 35-5.
Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik led from the front and despite losing Mohammed Haffez pushed his team to reach the target at 93 for two with 36 balls remaining.
Pakistan finished their matches unbeaten which augurs well for their new coach Geoff Lawson ahead of this month抯 inaugural Twenty20 World Championships in South Africa.
"We have had excellent preparations for the World Championships in very good conditions.
"We are pleased with our results," said the former Australian pace bowler.
Lawson said he decided to introduce spinners in the match against Kenya just in case they will be needed to play the main role in the South African conditions which are likely to favour spin. |

India nick epic victory to level series
LONDON: India clinched a nail-biting two-wicket victory over England at the Oval on Wednesday, knocking off an imposing 317-run target to level the series at 3-3.
Sachin Tendulkar scored a sensational 94 as India chased down England抯 daunting score but it was Robin Uthappa, a late call-up, who steered India home with two balls to spare thanks to his unbeaten 47.
India, who got off to great start to their chase with Saurav Ganguly and Tendulkar putting on 150 for the first wicket, needed 10 off the last over.
Uthappa, brought in to replace Dinesh Karthik, sprinted for two runs off the first ball but Stuart Broad then brilliantly ran out Zaheer Khan (0) off his own bowling.
Showing no nerves, Uthappa flicked a full toss down the leg side for four and then thumped the fourth ball of the over past a despairing fielder to spark celebrations amongst thousands of Indian fans in the stadium.
It was a stunning end to an absorbing contest full of dazzling strokes.
The seven-match series will now be decided in the final encounter at Lord抯 on Saturday.
India captain Rahul Dravid heaped praise on youngster Uthappa.

England beat India in series decider
LONDON: England clinched the one-day international series against India on Saturday with a seven-wicket victory in the seventh and final match at Lord's.
After India's thrilling run chase at the Oval on Wednesday had levelled the series at 3-3, Saturday's eagerly-awaited clash fizzled into anti-climax after India were bowled out for 187.
England lost openers Luke Wright and Matthew Prior for ducks to raise hopes among the thousands of India fans in a sell-out crowd but unbeaten knocks of 71 from Kevin Pietersen and 64 from captain Paul Collingwood guided them home with 13 overs to spare.
Andrew Flintoff, who returned to the England side after passing a fitness test on his ankle, and Dimitri Mascarenhas both took three wickets Rahul Dravid had won the toss and elected to bat.
Only Mahrendra Singh Dhoni's belligerent 50 salvaged some respectability for India who never recovered from a ragged start which had them reeling at 59 for four.
India opener Sourav Ganguly got away with several rash strokes in his scratchy 15 before he edged a pinpoint delivery from paceman James Anderson to Flintoff at second slip.
It was a disappointing day for India batsman Sachin Tendulkar who was making possibly his last appearance at Lord's. He was the victim of a questionable umpiring decision by Aleem Dar, adjudged to have nicked a Flintoff delivery behind to Prior having reached 30 with some trademark strokes |

English eye inaugural Twenty20 title
JOHANNESBURG: England's 4-3 one-day series win over India last week had given the team confidence to do well in the inaugural Twenty20 world championship, captain Paul Collingwood said on Monday.
England and India arrived here from London earlier in the day after completing an exciting contest over the last two months in which India won the Test series 1-0 before the hosts extracted revenge in the one-dayers.
Collingwood said the team were excited by the series win and looked forward to doing well in the Twenty20 event despite lack of adequate preparation.
揥e played some fantastic cricket against India and we come into the world Twenty20 with a lot of confidence, |

Record-setting Gillespie sends Kenya to new low
DURBAN (South Africa): Mark Gillespie returned the best-ever figures in Twenty20 cricket as New Zealand demolished Kenya by nine wickets in the world championships here yesterday.
Gillespie picked up 4-7 in 2.5 overs to send Kenya crashing for 73 all out, the lowest T20 international total, which the Kiwis surpassed easily in the eighth over to begin their campaign on a rousing note.
| Party time: New Zealand cricket players celebrating (background) the dismissal of Kenyan batsman as dancers perform during their Twenty20 world championship cricket match in Durban, South Africa, yesterday.

Peter Fulton ended the one-sided match with two consecutive sixes off Rajesh Bhudia.
In Tuesday抯 opening match, West Indian Chris Gayle scored the first century in the shortest version of the game but could not prevent an eight-wicket win by hosts South Africa.
Daniel Vettori celebrated his elevation as New Zealand抯 Test captain earlier in the day by winning the toss and asking Kenya to bat first at a sun-baked Kingsmead.
Kenya lost the first three wickets without a run on the board, slipped to 4-1 before Collins Obuya and Thomas Odoyo put on 36 for the fifth wicket.
Both batsmen made 18 runs each but it was not enough to help the Africans put up a reasonable total to challenge New Zealand in the group C match.

Gayle scores century for Windies but S. Africa win
JOHANNESBURG: Chris Gayle scored the first century in Twenty20 international cricket but it was not enough to give West Indies victory as South Africa won the opening match of the Twenty20 world championship by eight wickets on Tuesday.
Gayle slammed 117 off just 57 balls, with a record 10 sixes, as West Indies posted a challenging 205 for six after being sent in to bat in the Group A match.
But Herschelle Gibbs put on 54 off 37 balls with captain Graeme Smith (28) for the first wicket before he and Justin Kemp guided South Africa to a comfortable victory with 14 balls to spare.
Gibbs batted with a runner but it had no effect on his dazzling strokeplay as he blazed 90 not out off 55 balls, with 14 fours and two sixes, as he and Kemp added 120 in 9.2 overs.
West Indies gave Gibbs a costly chance on 43 when Shivnarine Chanderpaul dropped him on the boundary off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo and their bowling was also profligate.
Kemp cruised to 46 not out off 22 balls with five fours and two sixes.
Earlier, South Africa had gone wicketless until the 14th over as Gayle and Devon Smith put on a record opening stand of 145 off 86 balls. Smith was eventually caught behind off a cramped slash off Vernon Philander for a run-a-ball 35 that included just three boundaries.
The left-handed Gayle preferred the aerial route, hitting just seven fours, but his 10 sixes doubled the record of five shared by Australians Ricky Ponting, Damian Martyn and Adam Gilchrist. Ponting had come closest to registering a century with his 98 not out against New Zealand in Auckland in 2004-05.
Gayle was eventually dismissed in the 17th over when an attempted hook off Johan van der Wath went straight up in the air, gifting wicketkeeper Mark Boucher with a second simple catch.
Batsmen came and went regularly after the record opening stand, the highest for any wicket in Twenty20 internationals. It beat the mark of 132 unbroken between South Africa抯 Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman when they opened the batting against Pakistan in Johannesburg earlier this year.
South Africa抯 bowlers had little to cheer about early on, but came back well to limit West Indies to 38 runs in the last five overs with Van der Wath taking two for 33 and Morne Morkel one for 30 in their four-over spells. |

Afridi helps Pakistan crush Scotland
DURBAN: Shahid Afridi smashed 22 off seven balls and then grabbed 4-19 as Pakistan brushed aside Scotland by 51 runs in the Twenty20 world championships here yesterday.
The pugnacious all-rounder ensured his team faced no hiccups after Craig Wright had taken three wickets to restrict Pakistan to 171-9 at the Kingsmead.
Scotland, playing their first Twenty20 international, were shot out for 120 in reply with opener Fraser Watts the only batsman to offer resistance with 46.
Umar Gul chipped in with 4-25, including two wickets off successive balls towards the end as Pakistan warmed up for tomorrow's clash against arch-rivals India at the same venue.

Windies out, Zimbabwe stun Australia
JOHANNESBURG: West Indies were knocked out of the Twenty20 world championship yesterday when Bangladesh roared to victory by six wickets in their group match.
Bangladesh won the toss and limited West Indies to 164 for eight before captain Mohammad Ashraful抯 sparkling 61 off 27 balls ensured they reached the target with two overs to spare.
Ashraful抯 delightful innings included seven fours and three sixes as he tore into the West Indies bowling after neither opener, Tamim Iqbal (10) nor Mohammad Nazimuddin (1), made any impression.
Ashraful shared a third-wicket partnership of 109 off 64 balls with Aftab Ahmed, who batted through the innings to finish with 62 not out off 49 balls, with eight fours and a six.
West Indies were once again sluggish in the field and ill-disciplined in their bowling, having been trounced by eight wickets in the tournament抯 opening match against South Africa on Tuesday at the same venue.
In Cape Town on Wednesday, wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor notched an unbeaten 60 as Zimbabwe stunned World Cup holders Australia in their Twenty20 match.
Zimbabwe scraped home with a ball to spare as Taylor抯 knock took them to 139 for five after Australia has posted only 138-9.
The 21-year-old faced just 45 balls and hit four fours and two sixes without losing concentration when a half-hour rain delay interrupted his innings.
Taylor and fellow opener Vusi Sibanda (23) started well before Zimbabwe slipped from 54 for one to 70 for four. Then Hamilton Masakadza (27) joined Taylor in a 53-run partnership that re-established control.
Earlier, medium-pacers Gary Brent and Elton Chigumbura shared five wickets as they limited Australia to their modest total. |

Sri Lanka crush Kenya with biggest Twenty20 victory
JOHANNESBURG: Power-packed Sri Lanka posted the biggest victory in Twenty20 cricket yesterday as they thrashed hapless Kenya by 172 runs in the world championships here.
The World Cup finalists earlier this year hit a new Twenty20 record total of 260-6 after being sent in to bat at the Wanderers and then dismissed Kenya for 88 runs in the Group C match.
The margin of victory was a whopping 72 runs more than England抯 100-run romp over Australia at Southampton in 2005 and firmly established Sri Lanka as strong title contenders in the inaugural world event.
Veteran Sanath Jayasuriya led the way with 88 off 44 balls and captain Mahela Jayawardene blasted 65 off 28 before Jehan Mubarak smashed an unbeaten 46 from 13 balls at the end.
Left-handed Mubarak took 29 runs off the 19th over bowled by seamer Lameck Ngoche as Sri Lanka surpassed by 39 runs the previous highest total of 221-5 by Australia against England in Sydney earlier this year.
The heavy defeat sent Kenya home from the tournament after they had lost their first match against New Zealand.
Sri Lanka play the Kiwis here today with both teams assured of a place in the Super Eights round.
Jayasuriya, the oldest player in the 12-nation tournament at 38, was named man of the match with 11 boundaries and four sixes at the top of the order.
