Yongbo: It's unfair
CHINA chief coach Li Yongbo is unhappy that his Thomas and Uber Cup teams will only get to try out the Putra Stadium for two hours before the start of the Finals on Sunday.
"We will get to train for only two hours tomorrow (today). It is not sufficient for my teams and I believe for others too. This is unfair," said Yongbo after the launch of badminton equipment and apparel Li Ning at the Palace of Golden Horses yesterday.
"I am unhappy. The host is given preference. It will give them the advantage when the tournament starts. I don't think we can do anything about it."
However, the former doubles ace said he hoped the unfair treatment would make his players even more determined in the Finals.
"Our target is to play our best badminton at the Finals and retain both titles. My players have been training hard and they are looking forward to the challenge from other teams," he said.
China, the defending champions, underwent 45 days of closed door training in Fujian for the Finals.
Yongbo said the China contingent will practice self-quarantine during the Finals in view of the H1N1 outbreak in Kuala Lumpur.
"The players will be confined to training venues, hotel and stadium. The team, including the officials, will not be allowed to roam. We read about the H1N1 problem at our training base and we have come here prepared.
"We have brought our own medical team and we will take their advise if the need arises. We will take all precautionary measures during our stay here."
China, represented by a host of world class players, will be the team to beat in the Thomas and Uber Cups.
The men's team, led by World No 2 Lin Dan, are in Group A with South Korea and Peru. The Uber Cup team will face Malaysia and the United States in Group A.
