Muslim Peace Force For Iraq
Islamabad - Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf proposed sending a Muslim peacekeeping force to Iraq as foreign ministers of Islamic countries met on Tuesday to discuss problems facing the Muslim world.
"The mass killing that is taking place (in Iraq), the carnage that is taking place there has to stop," Musharraf said at the start of a three-day meeting of the 34t" session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers. His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Brunei's Minister of Foreign Affairs, is attending the meeting.
"If all the warring factions, different factions in Iraq, if they accept, then maybe a Muslim peacekeeping force under the United Nations umbrella could be looked at if that leads to peace and resolution of the crisis," said the Pakistani president.
Musharraf opened the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) meeting in the capital Islamabad with a call for a political solution to bring peace to Iraq.
"Apolitical solution is a dire necessity now we have to stop all outside interference... And if outside interference stops, I think internal control would be possible." Musharraf also called for an early resolution of the Palestinian dispute that he said was at the core of many other disputes around the world. Despite mounting challenges to his authority at home, the Pakistani leader has sought to take a lead in Middle East diplomacy, visiting several Muslim and Arab nations earlier this year to push a new Middle East peace initiative.
The OIC foreign ministers meeting on the theme of "Peace, Progress and Harmony" will discuss a new charter for the organisation in the next two days to enable it to "effectively" represent the Muslim nations.
The Muslim world will continue to slide backwards and eventually be robbed of its sovereignty if it is not ready to become a knowledge-based society, said Musharraf.
He said that many member countries of the OIC had not kept abreast with new challenges in a world driven by knowledge-based economy, as they were being bogged down by illiteracy, high rate of poverty, weak industrial base and poor grasp of science and technology.
Against such a backdrop, he said, Muslim nations were not in a position to help each other and were forced to rely on non-Muslim countries for help.
"I'm afraid that if this support (continues to) come from non-Muslim countries, we may compromise our sovereignty," Musharraf said. "At this juncture, the OIC should revitalise itself and be well equipped to address constant challenges confronting the 1.25 billion Muslims worldwide," he added. The president said the Islamic world was facing a defining moment, being at the epicentre of a slew of conflicts where Muslims are the victims.
"We need to solve these (problems) collectively. The OIC must have a role to play and it must be equipped financially and administratively to play this role, he added.
He called on the OIC to establish a mechanism to resolve conflicts involving Muslim countries so as not to be dependent on outsiders for solutions.
"Here, the OIC charter which is being revised by eminent Muslim leaders, has to ensure that the grouping has the capability to contribute to the progress of its members much more than what it has done in the past," he added. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |

Motorists Continue To Ignore Road Safety
By Hadi DP Mahmud
Bandar Seri Begawan - Thirty-two road fatalities were reported in the sultanate last year, while 38 accidents accounted for the road death toll in 2005.
World Health Organisaton statistics show that an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide die on the roads each year, and as many as 50 million are injured.
Carelessness was billed by the Road Safety Council chairman, Dato Paduka Md Yusof Md Hassan, who put it simply: "Human suffering caused by roadcrashes is huge, as the impact often extends beyond the loss of life itself," as the main cause of road accidents last year.
Further elaborating on the causes of these incidents, he said such accidents have included traffic lights violation, speeding at controlled areas, overloading and improper packaging of commercial and heavy vehicles, use of handphones while driving and improper usage of roads like roundabouts.
At a road safety seminar for the First United Nations Global Road Safety Week held earlier this April, he elaborated on the physical, psychological and economic consequences of these accidents.
"Crash survivors and their families must cope with the painful and often long-term consequences of injury, disability and rehabilitation. In many cases, the cost of care, the loss of the primary breadwinner, funeral expenses, or the loss of income due to disability, can drive a family into poverty," he further explained.
Since the beginning of the year, statistics from the Royal Brunei Police Force's Investigation and Traffic Department reveals that traffic violations have now reached the two-third mark of last year's total of traffic violations. Despite the Road Safety Week campaign, the figures clearly show that motorists in the country still continue to exercise irresponsible road behaviour, such as speeding, and ignoring the fact that speed kills.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times |

'All Black' Deviant Group Busted In Raid
By Za'im Zaini & Amin Hosni
Bandar Seri Begawan - A group of 30 people, in the midst of learning the 'trick' to turn leaves into money, was taken by surprise when a posse of officials from the Royal Brunei Police Force from Tutong District, Internal Security Department, Law Enforcement Section of the Department of Immigration and National Registration and Aqidah Control Section of Syariah Affairs Department gate-crashed into the 'secret' congregation in Tutong District Tuesday night.
The congregants were all dressed in black and were allegedly being duped by a leader, known as "Ayahanda Putera", suspected to be involved in a "bomoh" activity called "menarik duit" or claim to be able to make money out of leaves.
Acting on a tip-off from the public, the Intelligence Section of the Agidah Control, Syariah Affairs Department made investigations on the activities of the group believed to have deviant elements almost a month prior to the raid. It was held at a residence in the area of Kampong Kiudang, Tutong District.
During the raid, the enforcers were shocked when they found the group allegedly performing a "zikir" in a way that was like worshipping the leader. The `all black' group comprised men and women most of whom are adults. Although a young girl was also present at the time, the Bulletin was told that she was there to seek help from the leader for her exams.
The enforcers also found items believed to be used in deviationist activities that were seized for evidence.
Among the items confiscated were a gold-plated dragon replica, tusks believed to be from a wild boar, "Keris", yellow clothes used to cover the area where "Ayahanda Putera" was seated, violin and old pots.
Meanwhile, the enforcers also found a separate washing room in the house where buckets filled with leaves and flowers were found that were to be turned into money.
The raid was an effort by the Aqidah Control Section, Syariah Affairs Department to rid the country of deviant activities or influences that could tarnish the teachings of Islam.
The section reminded the general public, especially Muslims, not to get involved in activities that are deviant in nature and against the teachings of Islam.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |

Erdiana Rahim, Deputy General
Manager of Takaful BIBD Sdn Bhd
Customer Service Makes Takaful BIBD Stand Out In Market
By Sonia K
Bandar Seri Begawan - Takaful BIBD Sdn Bhd is the leader in Brunei's motor vehicle insurance sector enjoying a market share of as much as 25 per cent with the remaining going to other two Takaful (Takaful IBB and TAIB) and conventional insurance providers.
Every year, Takaful BIBD has seen a 15 per cent rise in growth (of customers) for its insurance products.
"Life insurance is a growing segment in the market as more and more people recognise the value of having this sort of coverage. In the country with a working population of 150,000, it is a daily challenge of trying to establish and grow our business at the same time. A large proportion of the insurance to takaful business, however, is on motor vehicle coverage," said Erdiana Rahim, Deputy General Manager of Takaful BIBD Sdn Bhd, in an interview with the Bulletin.
Approximately 42,000 motor vehicles have been insured under Takaful BIBD and last year alone 3,500 vehicles were insured a month.
"We always pride ourselves on our exceptional level of customer service. This we extend to people at all levels of income or walks of life. For 2007, this is especially true, as we have implemented some very proactive measures to ensure that our customers' needs are met including introduction of service ambassadors, regular customer service training for our staff, and commitment by management to improve their operations," she said when asked why more and more people are migrating from conventional insurance providers to Takaful BIBD.
"We also have very competitive rates that we offer to our customers on all our products. And all this put together contrives to brings more and more Takaful BIBD Sdn Bhd participants into our fold," she said.
When asked about some of Takaful BIBD's Islamic banking practices, she named Al-Wakalah and Al-Mudharrabah, which is a profit sharing concept where profits are shared with the participants according to the proportion.
"As compared to the conventional providers, they are more of risk takers than a profit sharing business kind of companies. The difference is, by the end of the maturity period our customers will be earning their profits, or also known as payback, out of what they have actually paid," Erdiana Rahim said.
To illustrate this, she gave an example. "Say someone comes in to pay a premium of $100 and say the profit rate at that time at the end of the maturity period is 20 per cent, we will be giving back 20 per cent of the $100 premium that they have actually put in which is $20 (as a payback or a bonus). This is done provided they don't have any claims, losses or cancellations during that period."
This is one of the reasons why Takaful BIBD thinks the public should choose to purchase insurance from them. Other reasons include its competitive pricing, great customer service, its distribution channel as they do sales through agents, and its 11 branches that are situated together with its BIBD branches, making them easily accessible.
Besides the bonus payback (Al-Mudharrabah) that it offers to their customers, Takaful BIBD also has other benefits, some of which are protection and savings/investment through takaful products and 'Pahala' which means fulfilling religious obligations and Fardhu Kifayah through the 'Tabaru' concept. The Takaful BIBD also offers unlimited towing services to its motor vehicles insurance customers. On top of that, it also has a service that caters to its premier customers (corporate and VIPs) and that service is called Takaful Diamond Services.
When asked whether vehicles insured by Takaful BIBD are still covered when brought outside Brunei like Miri, Limbang or Kota Kinabalu, the Acting Manager in Sales and Marketing Amiruddin Dato Haji Talib said, "Yes, they are. We do cover cars across the border within Borneo."
"There are cases where accidents have happened outside Brunei, across the border and we've actually covered their claims. Either we have the repairs done there or if the customer prefers to have them done at home we'll tow it back to Brunei to get it repaired in a workshop here. But reports on accidents must be made to the police and Takaful BIBD within 24 hours," the deputy general manager added.
Asked why insurance for some of the continental cars compared to cars made in Asia seem to be more costly, Takaful BIBD said, "Basically, continental cars are more of luxurious cars, they are more expensive and spare parts are more difficult to obtain. So, if an accident were to happen, we will have to get the spare parts from abroad, which makes it expensive. Also owners of continental cars would prefer their cars to be repaired at their respective car agents.
"Some of our workshops are not able to repair those cars that are installed with high technology gadgets which only car agents are able to do. To have it repaired at car agents would be slightly more costly which is why the price of insurance for continental cars are more expensive," Erdiana Rahim said.
With regards to future plans, in terms of products, Takaful BIBD aims to encourage on savings. It is also trying to concentrate on life products, a few of which were introduced this year. This is to basically encourage the public to save as the product will be more beneficial to its participants than to Takaful BIBD.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin |
