I refer to the 18 Mar 2013 Straits Times report of your video presentation to the Australian Mines and Metals Association during which you urged Australia to learn from the successful economic policies of Lee Kuan Yew, who transformed Singapore [1]. That is a grave misunderstanding of the truth behind Singapore’s transformation. The successful economic policies that transformed Singapore belong to Dr Albert Winsemius, the Dutch economist sent by the United Nations in 1960 to help Singapore industrialise. It was Dr Winsemius who came up with Singapore’s economic plan which Singapore judiciously

• He was Singapore’s trusted guide through economically uncharted waters for 25 years from 1960. Through him, Singapore borrowed ideas and strategies that worked for Netherlands and other developed nations. Singapore’s economy is flying high today, thanks in large measure to his sound advice and patient counsel. He is the Father of Jurong, the Dutchman behind Singapore Incorporated. Dr Winsemius was a special person for he had changed Singapore to what it is today. For Singaporeans today, a huge debt of gratitude is owed to the Dutch economist [2].

• He was behind the 10-year development plan that saw the island state transform into today’s high technology, high value added industrial hub [3].

• Singapore’s economic miracle owes something to Dutch economist Dr Albert Winsemius. Dr Albert Winsemius was not merely a consultant, he was someone who revolutionalised and set Singapore’s economy in the right direction [4].

• Dr Winsemius of the Netherlands and Mr I.F. Tang of China were two foreign friends of Singapore who made extraordinary contributions to the economic development of Singapore. They came to Singapore as the leader and secretary of the first UN Industrialisation Survey Team in 1961 [5].

• Goh Keng Swee and Dr Albert Winsemius are generally regarded as the brains behind the coherent export/foreign investment oriented policies that Singapore has followed [6].

• A year after his first visit to Singapore, he presented a 10-year economic development plan. Winsemius also advised the government about large scale housing projects in Singapore and managed to get Philips, Shell and Exxon to Singapore [7].

• Albert Winsemius presented a ten-year development plan to turn Singapore from a port dependent on entrepot trade to a manufacturing and industrial centre. Following the Winsemius Report, the Legislative Assembly passed an Act in 1961 to create a statutory board to promote industrialisation and economic development. The EDB came into being … [8]

• The 1960-61 United Nations mission led by Albert Winsemius helped develop a blueprint for Singapore’s industrialisation and development plan and recommended the establishment of EDB [9].

Mr Lee Kuan Yew himself had this to say about Dr Winsemius:

• Singapore and I personally are indebted to him for the time, energy and devotion he gave to Singapore. I learnt much about Western business and businessmen from him … He gave me practical lessons on how European and American companies operated … showed me that Singapore could plug into the global economic system of trade and investments [10]

Singapore was so developed back in 1965 when it separated from Malaysia. I know that in Singapore's school text book claimed Singapore was only fishing village when it separated from Malaya. What a big lie!!!

Do you believe during that time, there was already traffic jam in Singapore?

British had utilized most of the Malaya resources(minus those sent directly to Great Britain) to build Singapore's public infrastructure and building.

Huge amount of Malaysia's expensive resources was all been allocated to build Singapore including their world first class (during that time) ports. These ports later generated and continue to generate huge amount of money  and revenue, simply due to the strategic location. These ports also provided huge employment opportunities to Singaporean which generate their middle class population.

With the ready made infrastructures that were in general of 40 years ahead of Malaya, LKY does not required to utilize the revenues from ports operation to built them.

Singapore was lucky and was having great advantages compare to us because their infrastucture including their international level ports were built using Malaya's resources by British with Britain expertise that were paid using Malaya's money.

Being a city state country is another advantage since it is small and easier to manage especially when you have steady flow of money from ports operation.

The cost to manage small country can be easily financed by the ports. On top of that, there were still a lot of money that can be used to invest. It does not need a lot of leadership skill to develop Singapore since it is like been given a mansion complete with utilities which everything paid by others.

Port operation has been known to generate very good income since thousands of years. Apart from the high cost to initially built the ports, the cost of maintaining them are low. If you have strategic spot for the ports; you also does need to do any marketing and promotion.

The ships will dock at the ports because they needs to get supply to continue they journey. These supplies again generate another great economy. As you can see, it does not take a lot economic wisdom if you have strategic ports compare to huge revenue  they can generated.

On the other hand, oil industry is very expensive business. Many countries and corporations spend a lot of in millions if not billions of dollar to do explorations activities and might get nothing.

This is huge investment that a new independant country will not has resources to do it. Therefore, Malaysia need to invite company like Shell that during those period take advantages of small country like Malaysia.

I felt so angry at your readers who kept saying that Lee Kuan Yew was a great man who deserve many respect and that what he did in the past was neccessary and that communism is very dangerous. Is it really?

Lee Kuan Yew threw my friend’s grandpa into prison for 20+ years without trial.  He was a prominent and generous medical doctor at Balestier road, do you think he deserve 20+ years in prison just because he have a different opinion with LKY?

For your information, those people he thrown into prison are the original founders of the PAP and back then LKY was just a small fry lawyer working for them. He backstabbed them and basically destroyed their future and prime years just because they hold a different political view.

Now, I understand many of you would have great respect for Lee Kuan Yew because you learnt from your History and Social Studies textbook that he was the ‘Founding Father’ of Singapore and without him Singapore would only be a fishing village.

Well, let me tell you that is total bullshit and propaganda written by the PAP. History is always written by the victors, unfortunately ordinary people would believe whatever that is written in their history textbook completely. I would say that more than 50% of the readers at The Real Singapore are retards because they completely believe what they learn about LKY from the propaganda mainstream media as well as their history textbook!

Let me tell you, the British were the ones responsible for transforming Singapore from a fishing village to a vibrant city. Not LKY, all he did was betrayed the founders of PAP, throw them into prison without trail and impose failed “stop at two” policy and close down all the privately owned newspaper company and in the process destroy almost all forms of freedom of speech in Singapore.

Without LKY, we would have more freedom like Hong Kong is now. Is Hong Kong a bad place to live in? Without pressure from China like Hong Kong, Singapore would be one of the best country to live in now.

Are we really the best country to live in now? More than 50% of the Singaporeans being surveyed wants to migrate if they were given a chance to. Singapore is also one of the most brain drained country (Do Note: Serious Brain Drain problems usually only happens in developing countries where the educated people migrate out of their 3rd world country to earn more money outside). 3 out of 10 educated Singaporeans migrated overseas, which means 30% of the money pumped into education is wasted.  Oh okay, THANK YOU LEE KUAN YEW for that! Go and speak to any of the malay community in Singapore and they would tell you how much they hate Lee Kuan Yew and his racist remarks!

In the interests of nearly 3000 ex-political detainees so far in the history of Singapore (multiplied ten times if we included their families) who suffered deprivation through loss of their freedom and livelihoods, I would say Lee Kuan Yew was a notorious dictator.

Is Hong Kong a slum or a fishing village? Both Hong Kong and Singapore were the jewels of the British Colony, whatever difference between Hong Kong and Singapore now would be credited to Lee Kuan Yew.

What can u expect from someone who has learning and language difficulties. He was a slow learner. LKY has dyslexia. There is special school for slow reader like him today.

So when LKY lacked ideas to raise capital, British then used Malaysia money to develop Spore. He then took all the credits for himself. Jadi lah founding father. Lupa pula siapa god father eh?

I opined that Singapore should pay Malaysia back. The profit sharing of revenue from port operation with accumulated interest. Amacam, ok tak?

When the Malaysians become smart and become less corrupt, life will become tougher for us.

Having a strategic ports are like having properties with super good location. It is all about location, location, location.
The owner of properties basically dont need to do anything since the price will keep on increasing in value.

The owner of the properties choose the right location and they just need to sit back and relaks. Dont need to use any brain to increase the price.

This is even more truth for port operation and location location location location and location is the most important factors. Every ships will stop at your ports regardless how poor it is been managed because there were no competitor with same strategic location.

Bcoz of corruption and mismanagement, Sgporeans are not allowed to withdraw their CPF unless they meet the minimum sum, which is keep increasing, dulu dengar $160k skrg nak lagi and sadly Sgporeans ramai tak ada balance banyak tu. Nak rasa duit CPF kena emigrate otherwise tunggu mati. Sana pensioners are unable to retire bcoz of insufficient CPF funds, mainly caused by the low interest from the CPF which is as low as 2.5%. EPF returns way way better at 3 folds kan?

Chinese newspaper Zaobao reported that East Coast Park is now a “tent village” where not only more than a dozen people have set up camp, but is also headed by a 29-year-old “village headman”. Most campers were forced into this “temporary shelter” while they wait for their rental HDB flat.

Newspaper received readers informed that the area along the east coast there are many large tents, as a self-sufficiency of the “village.”

According to the newspaper, the  “Tent Village” is in a location which is hidden from most members of the public, not far from a construction site, but near public toilets, which is convenient for the campers.

The “village headman”, Muhammad Ahmad Rahman, who declined to be photographed said they were all forced to live there as they did not have anywhere else to go.  he said that there were more than a dozen families which lived there.

He added that the campers were not thieves and lived by the beach as they preferred to be self reliant. Members and volunteers from the Family Service Center also visit the campers from time to time to provide food rations.

Rahman said that moving to a shelter would mean that they would lose their freedom. Most campers are on several financial assistance schemes. The campers have also been fined several times for camping illegally.  Rahman insisted that no one wants to live under open skies in a tent.

National Parks Board told the newspaper that the public is only allowed to camp in certain areas of the park and only with a permit.
