EPISODE 2 : Mr. Monk and the Candidate (Continued from Part One)

The police get a lead on the would-be assassin, but he manages to escape, in part because of Monk's fear of heights. Sharona convinces the deputy mayor to let Monk continue his investigation despite Captain Stottlemeyer's objections.

After Monk has gathered the suspects together to recreate the crime scene, the hitman takes a shot at his accomplice and Sharona, playing Lois Lane, follows him into a sewer. Overcoming his revulsion, Monk goes in after them, placing Kleenex on the rungs of the ladder to protect his hands and feet on the way down. But Kleenex won't protect his shoes or the cuffs of his pants from the filthy, six-inch deep water. This novel act of courage moves Monk one step closer to recovering his emotional stability--and getting his old job back.

Mr. Monk and the Airplane
episode 13 season 1

Synopsis
Thinking that he's just accompanying Sharona to the airport to pick up her aunt, Monk discovers to his dismay that she's the one making the flight. The choice between being on his own without Sharona or flying cross-country to New Jersey is a tough one, but he overcomes his fears and boards the plane. After annoying the passengers and crew with his first-time-flyer questions, he becomes even more unsettled after small anomalies convince him that the Frenchman sitting across the aisle has murdered his wife and the woman accompanying him is an imposter. He calls Captain Stottlemeyer only to find that it's the captain's day off but manages to persuade Lt. Disher to search the airport for a body. With on-and-off help from Sharona (who would rather be "helping" Tim Daly decide whether to accept a role in an upcoming film) and from the extension cord salesman in the seat next to him, Monk tries to provide the evidence Disher needs to order the arrest. Meanwhile another murder is committed while Monk is trapped in the bathroom. Sharona rescues him, but the co-pilot refuses to believe his story and orders him back to his seat. The angry flight attendant (played by Tony Shalhoub's wife, Brooke Adams) disables the call button and destroys a piece of key evidence, but Monk still has the phone to call Disher, and the race is on to find the body before the murderous couple board their plane for Paris.

Notes
Please submit viewer comments relating to this episode to the proper Forum.
Despite being listed in the opening credits, Ted Levine does not appear in this episode.

USA Network originally scheduled "Mr. Monk and the Dead Dog" (a title suggesting a connection with Kelly Street and a new lead in the investigation of Trudy's murder) as the season finale. Clearly, they've switched episodes on us. The "Dead Dog" episode will not air during the second season. mystery of what happened to it has yet to be resolved.

Brooke Adams, who guest stars as a flight attendant, is Tony Shalhoub's wife. The episode also reunites him with his Wings costar Tim Daly, who plays himself.

Quotes
Monk: I'm gonna stay here.
Sharona: By yourself?
Monk: No, I'm gonna come with you.
Sharona: On the plane?
(Monk alternately nods and shakes his head.)
Sharona: Are you sure?
Warren: This is a flight I'll never forget. And I sure want to. Adrian, I've been thinking over your theory about the French couple and I've come to one conclusion--I'd like my card back.

Security Guard: You didn't have to put your money in a baggie, sir.
Sharona: Yes, he did.

Warren Beach (seeing Monk wipe his hands): I'm not sick.
Sharona: No, he is.

Sharona: Why don't you go back to your seat--count the clouds?
Monk: I already did. Twenty-three.

Foreman: Are you okay?
Disher (doing Monk's Zen Sherlock routine): I've seen Monk do this a hundred times.

Sharona: Oh, my God!
Monk: What?
Sharona: That's Tim Daly. I love him
Monk: What is he, some kind of actor?
Sharona: Well, he was in that show, Wings.
Monk: I never saw it. Was it good?
Sharona: Well, he was.

Monk (trying to hook a shoe with an extension cord): It doesn't reach.
Warren: Call Warren Beach. May I suggest. . .the Anaconda? I'll need it back. It's the prototype.

Warren Beach: Everyone takes extensions cords for granted, but can you imagine what the world would be without them?
Monk (very long pause): I guess all the furniture would be a lot closer to the walls.
Warren Beach: Exactly. If it doesn't reach, call Warren Beach.

Monk: And the last time the plane was disinfected was when did you say?

Monk (watching a plane take off): How can they fly? They're made of metal. They weigh two hundred tons. Plus now you're adding all those magazines.

Flight attendant: Let me guess. First time on a plane?
Monk: Oh, no, no. I've been on a plane before.
Flight attendant: Where did you go?
Monk: I didn't actually go anywhere. Before we took off, I was crying so much that they asked my mother and me to leave the plane.
Sharona: Tell her how old you were.
Monk: I was twenty- (pause) seven.

Monk: How can we tell that we have the best people sitting near the exits?

Flight attendant: May I help you?
Monk: I was just testing the call button.
Flight attendant: It seems to be working. (Pause.) So you can stop now.

Monk: When they kissed in the terminal, she had to stand on tiptoe. She's grown at least two inches.

Warren: Where's your friend? I want to show you something.
Monk: She's in the bathroom.
Warren: No, she's not. The sign says "unoccupied."
Monk: I hope she didn't leave.
Warren: Where can she go? It's an airplane.

Disher (on the phone): Are you really up there in an airplane?
Monk: It's better than being up here not in an airplane.

Monk: He spilled his wine. It's staining. I can feel it.

Bernard: To our wives and lovers. May they never meet.

Warren: You really think that man killed his wife?
Sharona: He always thinks people are killing each other.
Monk: That's true and I'll tell you why. Because they are.

Sharona (to Tim Daly): If I go to a movie and I see you chop off a guy's foot, I'm gonna want my money back.

Tim Daly: I can't believe it. He's a freakin' tattletale.
Monk (to flight attendant): He called me a freakin' tattletale.

Ticket Clerk: I can assure you, Mr. Monk, this particular aircraft has a perfect safety record.
Monk: Could I see it?

Warren Beach: You know how they say your seat cushion floats? Not all of them do. I don't want to talk about it any more.

Little Girl: You sure complain a lot.
Monk: Thank you.

Little Girl: Do you like riddles?
Monk: Yes.
Little Girl: Good, I've got one for you.
Monk: Did I say yes? I meant no.

Monk: Did you hear that? She forgot she was a vegetarian. That's like forgetting you're a Republican.

Goofs
If you want to be really nitpicky. . . So who plays Antonio in the Monk-world version of Wings? It can't be Tony Shalhoub, because nobody wonders why he looks just like Antonio. (contributed by Gislef)

If Monk could hear the Frenchman and his "wife" conversing, couldn't they also hear him?

Monk notices that after hearing the wing flaps move, Stefan Chabrol lifts his glass to avoid spilling his wine. Monk concludes that Stefan Chabrol works for an airline. Perhaps Stefan Chabrol is just a frequent flier. (Contributed by ironbutterfly0001)

Barbara Chabrol asks for the turkey dinner while the flight attendant states that she ordered the vegetarian meal. Monk claims that people don't forget that they're vegetarians. However, some vegetarians will eat turkey, chicken, other poultry, and fish and still consider themselves vegetarians. (Contributed by ironbutterfly0001) My note: Only a vegan would have preordered (or had her husband preorder) a vegetarian dinner on an airplane. And you don't forget that you're a vegan. CarolT

"Mrs. Chabrol" says she asked for turkey, which implies that she asked the flight attendant for that particular meal earlier. So why didn't they notice the discrepancy when she asked originally? (contributed by Gislef)
Chabrol and his "wife" are filthy rich. Why are they flying coach? (contributed by Gislef)

"Mrs. Chabrol" says she asked for turkey, which implies that she asked the stewardesses for that particular meal earlier. So why didn't they notice the discrepancy when she asked originally? (contributed by Gislef)

When Stefan Chabrol spills his glass of wine over Monk`s pants, Monk is in the aisle seat and we see Sharona and Warren Beach sleeping in the other two seats. In the previous shots, Monk was sit between Warren and Sharona, and they were both sleeping. . . . So when did Monk change seats with Sharona, and how did he do it since she was asleep? (Contributed by AnaliaC; not yet verified)

If Monk wanted to prove his status as an ex-detective to everyone aboard the flight, he could have had the pilot or a flight attendant call the SFPD, but that would have spoiled most of the plot (Contributed by n o n e.)

Analysis
This entertaining episode combines Monk at his most frustrated (and exasperating) with a suspenseful situation and a chance for Lt. Disher at last to show some competence. (Unfortunately having Disher in charge means that Captain Stottlemeyer is absent from the season finale, a disappointment for Ted Levine's many fans.) Monk has a number of memorable lines and it's possible to empathize both with him as he tries to deal with his fear of flying and with the passengers and crew who have to put up with his questions and complaints. Unfortunately, some of the other characters are more annoying than he is, including the pushy extension cord salesman who thinks he knows what's wrong with Monk and the dreadful little red-haired girl whose Pete/Repeat joke distresses Monk and makes the viewer want to toss her from the plane. The interaction between Sharona and Tim Daly, while not very believable, is a nice contrast to her usual relationships with highly unsuitable men, and Wings fans will enjoy the exchange between the former castmates, one in character and the other as himself. Mystery fans, on the other hand, will be disappointed to know who did it and why from the beginning of the episode, with the suspense depending on finding the evidence in time to prove the theory (and on Disher's ability to handle the case without the captain's help). The episode also seems like an odd choice for a season finale. Viewers who hoped for a cliffhanger with a connection to the Trudy mystery got a comedy instead, and even a comic finale ought to have involved all the main characters. It seems like a slight to Ted Levine to leave him out of the last episode of the season. I liked the episode despite these flaws, and I think most other viewers will, too. Seven out of ten.

this week episode -- 28th July 2004

Mr. Monk and the Billionaire Mugger
bepisode 7 season 1

Synopsisi
When billionaire software magnate Sidney Teal is shot dead by ex-cop Archie Modine after allegedly turning mugger and another policeman mysteriously flees the scene, Stottlemeyer calls in Monk to investigate. Not only is the idea of a billionaire turning mugger hard to swallow, the circumstances of the mugging are suspicious. Why, for example, would a mugger wear knee and elbow pads? Meanwhile, Sharona threatens to quit (this time for sure) when her paycheck bounces, and Stottlemeyer is hounded by reporters demanding information on "Fraidy Cop." Unable to continue the investigation without Sharona's help, Monk returns to the seemingly unsolvable mystery of his wife's murder only to find that his "new" clue isn't new; he's already talked to writer Kelly Street three times. Sharona finds that selling lamps isn't nearly as much fun as working for Monk (with or without money) and comes to the rescue with a new clue involving Teal and Modine.

Notes
# As a member of the Yahoo! monkfans board noted, there's also a Hitchcock motif in this episode: an intimidating housekeeper named Mrs. Danvers and Hitchcock films on the marquee (Psycho and The Man Who Knew Too Much).

# The Kelly Street scene, which seems to occur during cold weather despite the summer clothing in the rest of the episode, was originally part of the pilot (filmed in November-December 2001) but removed from the final version as presented on USA Network. Apparently the "cold snap" discussed by the DJs on Sharona's radio was added to account for this inconsistency. (Thanks to members of the monkfans group for this information.)

# The season finale is (or was) tentatively entitled "Mr. Monk and the Dead Dog." Will we be seeing more of Kelly Street?

# This episode features a Murder One reunion of sorts. J.C. McKenzie, Jessica Steen, and Stanley Kamel were all regulars on that show, and Peter Onorati guest-starred in episode six. (Contributed by Gislef)

Quotes
Sharona: You folded like a cheap suit.
Monk: A cheap tent. For the record, I folded like a cheap tent.

Sharona (shopping for lamps): If you were blindfolded, you wouldn't know the difference.
Monk: If I was blindfolded I wouldn't need a lamp.
Sharona: Okay, bad example.

Sharona: Where's your wallet?
Monk: I'm having it. . .umm, buffed.

Sharona: I know money doesn't matter on planet Monk, but I have a kid who expects three meals a day and sometimes gets sick.

Sharona: The stores in my neighborhood insist on money.

Monk: I'm going to be all alone. What a time to be me.

Monk (to Dr. Kroger): I hate owing you money. I just hate it. Listen. Until we get squared away, I'm going to have to start seeing you twice a week.

Sharona: I think I just busted this case wide open.

Monk: I'm not going to move. You're going to have to run me down. (Pause as the car drives away.) Or back up. One or the other.

Reporter (to running cop): Fraidy Cop! Just a couple of questions!

Stottlemeyer (as Fraidy Cop flees again): Shoot him!
Disher: I can't do that, sir.
Stottlemeyer: Then shoot me!

Monk: What should I do?
Disher: I don't know.
Monk: Tell me what to do.
Disher: I can't do that.
Monk: Can you find me someone who'll tell me what to do?

Goofs
# How did Sharona find Monk at the restaurant? She says she's been "looking all over for him" but did she just drive all over the city until she found him? (Contributed by Gislef.)

My note: Sharona probably guessed that Monk had gone looking for Leo Otterman, the millionaire who hadn't yet paid them for finding his Picasso. It's reasonable to suppose that she knew Otterman's habits well enough to know where Monk would go to find him. Also she specifically mentions him at the beginning of the episode, which should prepare us (and Sharona) for Monk's later attempt to find him. CarolT

# Isn't impersonating an officer a criminal offense?

# At the murder scene, Monk scoops up Modine's keys with a pen to avoid contaminating the evidence with his fingerprints (but still contaminating the crime scene). But then he just hands the keys over to Modine, who handles them without gloves or anything. (Contributed by Gislef.)

Saltz comments: Monk was probably not concerned about prints or contaminating the scene. He picked up the keys with a pen because he would never pick them up with his BARE hand.

# When Monk is buying three identical lamps, the lady at the counter tells him that he owes $95.75. That would mean that each lamp cost $31.91666667, not very likely. (Contributed by caitlin_weasley.) My note: The price would be rounded to the nearest penny and would include sales tax.

Analysis
Delectably combining suspense, humor, pathos, and witty dialogue, "Billionaire Mugger" is arguably the best episode in the series so far. Even those of us without OCD can empathize with Monk as he cuts a rose stem too short and "has" to trim the others to match (even though they're not his roses), and we jump along with him when the "stuffed" dog turns out to be alive. Many lines and scenes are laugh-aloud funny and the storyline is full of surprises, mostly involving the Fraidy Cop subplot. In addition, we get a new clue in the Trudy mystery and Disher gets a chance to show that, however clueless he may be as a detective, he can subdue a perp. (It helps, of course, to have Stottlemeyer pointing a gun at the guy.) Do I dare give it a ten out of ten?

Apasal TV3 suka tunggang terbalikkan episode?
