Is there rubber in your bubble tea?

Is there rubber in your bubble tea?

Everyone loves a refreshingbubble tea, but rumours have emergedthat the delicious chewy balls in the popular drink may actually be made from rubber.
The drink was invented in Taiwan in the 1980s, and consists of tea with fruit or milk flavourings, and with tapioca balls (or sometimes fruit jellies) added in.
Tapioca is traditionally made from cassava starch, sweet potato and brown sugar, but therehave been reports that the tapioca pearls used in some drinks are actually chemically made in factories.
According toRocketNews24, a hospital scan of a Chinese patient who had recently drunk bubble tea found strange white dots in their stomach. A doctor identified these dots as abnormal. Starch is digestible and so the scan should not have showed anything at all.
A reporter in Qingdao then went to the same bubble tea café as the original patient. After getting a CT scan, the reporter’s abdomen showed the same abnormal white dots.
Undercover interviews at a variety of bubble tea cafés revealed that employees could not name exactly what makes the tapioca pearls. Staff named a variety of ingredients, from “potatoes”, to the more generic “starch”.
However, one employee alleged: “They’re chemically made at a factory. It’s pretty weird, but they’re made with things like the soles of leather shoes and old tires.”
Qingdao University’s Chemical Experimentation Centre examined the ballsbut could not name exactly what made them, only that they were “highly adhesive”.

Eeewww...
Bubble tea, also calledboba,or pearl-tea, had its beginnings in Taiwan but has spread in popularity throughout the world. The creamy milk-tea dotted with chewy, gummy-like tapioca pearls and endless flavor possibilities makes this the perfect snack when you can’t decide if you want something todrink orsomething to eat.
The tapioca pearls that give these milky drinks their fun texture are made from cassava root. Or, at least they should be. But an investigation in China has turned upa “tapioca” plant that makes pearls from materials that aren’t even edible…
On October 19 in Tsingtao City, China, one drinker of bubble tea received a CT scan with some strange results: a number of little white dots appearing in the drinker’sstomach on the scan, according to a Shangdong Province TV newsreport. After the discovery, the reporter who covered the story went to the same bubble tea shop as the patient hadto order a drink then receive a CT scan herself. The result was the same:little white dots filling her stomach.
According to the head physician at East Tsingtao Intestinal Clinic, tapioca is a starchy food that is generally digested and absorbed like any other food. It should not sit in stomach like it appeared to be doing on the CT scan.
Consulting the employees at various bubble tea shops around the city, when asked what tapioca pearls are made of, replies varied from “starch” to “potatoes”, and even an occasional “I don’t know”, which left many netizens wonderingwhat on earth those tapioca pearls were made of.
Finally getting to the source, the reporter questioned a shop keeper at a tapioca wholesaler, who replied, “If no one’s getting sick from it then it doesn’t matter what it’s made of.”
Not at all satisfied or comforted by the answer, the investigation continued. At last, an employee at a different shop gave a more detailed, yet much more disturbing answer:
“They’re chemically made at a factory. It’s prettyweird, but they’re made with things like the soles of leather shoes and old tires.”
Obviously, things like tires and the soles of shoes weren’t meant to be consumed, and doing so can be very detrimental to your health, as these materials cannot be digested or absorbed by the digestive system. If they do not pass through, you risk severe blockages which may require surgery to fix.
There is no word yet what is being done with this revelation, if anything, but we can only hope that the factory trying to market chemically altered garbage as food gets shut down!

Fake Chinese bubble tea pearls made from old tyres, shoe soles – report
21 October 2015 08:00 Ryan Kilpatrick2 min read
A recent report from regional broadcaster Shandong Television has set the internet alight after revealing that one of the country’s favourite drinks may contain leather shoe soles and used tyres.
In package for lifestyle programme “Life Help,” a reporter in Qingdao drinks a pearl milk tea from a local shop and then goes a nearby hospital to undergo a CT scan. The scan showed a stomachful of undigested tapioca pearls.
At Qingdao University’s Chemical Experimentation Centre, scientists were baffled by the substance. Although they were unable to confirm what the pearls were made of, they described the material as “highly adhesive.”
Undercover interviews with milk tea shop managers around the city revealed that none of them seemed to know either. At one shop, however, one of the unwitting subjects appeared to come clean: “They’re all made at chemical plants. To put it bluntly, they’re made from the soles of leather shoes and old tyres.”
The popularity of pearl milk tea, also known as bubble tea, took a dive 2012 after a report from a German university suggested that the tapioca balls may cause cancer. However, bubble tea shops still remain a staple throughout Chinese cities.
Although the Shandong Television report could not conclusively prove that the pearls were indeed made from shoes or tyres, this latest raft of bad publicity is likely to spell more bad news for the beleaguered bubble tea industry. |
