King mcm kat Brunei & Saudi masih btahan sbb rakyat hidup senang. so setakat nih tak ramai rakyat yg nak mberontak. yg penting kasi rakyat cukup makan & hasil mahsul negara diagih dgn baik. |

The Iranian Factor
A major factor in the political struggle between PAS and UMNO was an event that took place thousands of miles away, in Iran. The Iranian revolution of 1979, led by Ayatollah Khomeini, sent shock waves throughout the world and marked a turning point in the Muslim world. Ayatollah Khomeini inspired and led a revolution which led to the fall of the Shah of Iran. Years of corrupt and inept rule at the hands of the Shah and living under the constant harassment and persecution of his detested SAVAK secret police (set up with the help of the Americans) had made the Shah so unpopular that his downfall was expected sooner than later.
Despite the problematic outcome of the Iranian revolution itself (many of its leaders like Ayatollah Shariatmadari were quickly disillusioned and were later themselves persecuted or forced to leave the country), the fact that it actually took place was enough to provide the Islamist movements of the world with a symbol of success. The world of Sunni Islam was amazed by the fact that the world's first Islamic revolution took place in Shia Iran, where the Shias had separated religion and politics for centuries. After coming to power, Khomeini and the ulama effectively repaired this historical break by declaring that Iran would henceforth be ruled under a supreme viceregency of the jurists (velayat-e fakih) which in practical terms meant the creation of a clerical dictatorship with absolute (mutlaq) power for the first time.
The governments of Southeast Asia were perturbed by the latest developments in Iran. In Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, dissident Islamist parties and movements were openly supporting the Iranian revolution and its underlying principles. The leadership of the ABIM in particular (then under Anwar Ibrahim) praised the Iranian revolutionaries for their commitment to Islam. In 1979, Anwar Ibrahim and other ABIM leaders visited Iran and met Ayatollah Khomeini. Upon his return from Iran, Anwar called for an "Iranian Liberation and Solidarity Day" to be held on 16 March 1979.
Throughout the Islamic world, the socio-cultural and political impact of the Iranian revolution was profound. The Iranian revolution furnished the struggle of Sunni Islamist movements worldwide with renewed vigour and the tenor of their polemics and campaigns were heightened considerably. Islamist movements the world over redoubled their efforts to fight the twin world-devouring Satans (jahan-khor)--the Eastern and Western blocs--that were crushing the Muslims between them. So great was the impact of the Iranian revolution on the leaders of PAS of the late 1970s that they would continue to sing the praises of Ayatollah Khomeini up to the end of the second millennium?
Fighting Islam with Islam: UMNO's State-Orchestrated Islamization
The other factor that contributed to the radicalization of PAS's internal politics and discourse was the accelerating Islamization race that was taking place in Malaysia itself, between UMNO and PAS.
The leaders of UMNO were not about to sit still and allow PAS to gain the upper hand in the discursive contest to define the meaning and content of Islam. Shortly after Mahathir Mohamad came to power as the fourth Prime Minister, the country witnessed the implementation of an UMNO-led state Islamization policy designed to promote and project UMNO's vision of Islam as a modern way of life, culture and government. No stone would be left unturned in the pursuit to redefine the meaning and essence of Islam itself, as UMNO sought to out-Islamize its nemesis PAS.
UMNO's brand of modernist and moderate Islam was based on a chain of equivalences that equated Islam with all that was positive in its eyes. Islam was equated with modernity, economic development, material progress, rationality and liberalism. (It is interesting to note that other values like democracy and human rights were not part of this chain of equivalences.) In the same way that PAS's oppositional dialectics framed a reversed chain of equivalences as its mirror opposite, UMNO's understanding of Islam was also framed against a negative chain of equivalences that equated PAS's Islam with obscurantism, extremism, fanaticism, intolerance, backwardness and militancy
