Mark van Bommel – The Tackling Machine
Netherlands’ skipper has been there and done it all in club football. He has won league titles at four different continents including a Champions league winner medal with Barcelona. But the only thing that is missing from his trophy cabinet is an international honour with Holland. This might very well be the last chance for the 35-year-old van Bommel to win something with the Oranje, after missing out on winning the world cup in South Africa.
He is one of the best ball winning midfielders in past decade or so, and once again he would be the one to provide cover to a relatively weak Dutch defense. His importance in the team cannot be over emphasized. If Netherlands are to win this tournament, then Marwijk’s son-in-law will have to play a big part in it.
Wesley Sneijder – Kapellmeister of the Dutch band
Sneijder has had a fairly disappointing season, compared to his usual high standards. His season was also plagued by niggling injuries. Despite all this, he still remains one of the best play-makers in the sport today. His link up with van Persie and Huntelaar is pivotal and there were signs in the recent friendly defeat against Bulgaria, that the triumvirate are slowly getting into sync. Sneijder played a wonderful lofted pass for van Persie, who timed his run perfectly, and scored on the volley. Dutch fans are sure to get may such moments in this tournament.

59 goals in the last 80 appearances for Arsenal; that’s how prolific van Persie has been in the past two seasons. The man who was always earmarked as the long term replacement of Dennis Bergkamp for both Arsenal and Netherlands, is finally fulfilling his promise. With a potentially leaky defense at the back, Marwijk will hope that van Persie and Huntelaar can score more goals than they concede.
There have been talks prior to the tournament about how difficult it might be to accommodate both van Persie and Huntelaar into the starting line-up. But the Gunner captain is more than adept at playing behind the front striker and even in wide areas. In the recently concluded friendly against Bulgaria, van Persie played wide right in the 4-2-3-1 formation with Huntelaar in the middle. The Dutchman is all set to make this a tournament to remember, both on the personal front and for his team. |
