A winter love to make you weep
By chang May Choon

THINK grown men don\'t cry? Well, obviously you haven\'t watched Korean soap operas.

Like the ladies, the men also let tears flow when they\'re heartbroken, instead of acting all macho and pretending they don\'t hurt.

Winter Sonata, touted as the sequel to the blockbuster hit Autumn In My Heart, is another melodrama that will have us crying along with the protagonists\' misfortunes.

First, the carefree childhood segment.

Seventeen-year-old student Junxiang (Bae Yong-Jun of Hotelier fame) transfers school to look for the father he\'s never met.

He meets spunky classmate Youzhen (Choi Ji-Woo, left, with Yong-Jun) and her childhood buddy, Xianghe (Park Yong-Ha).

Junxiang and Youzhen bicker first, then slowly fall in love, until he finds a picture of his mum in her family albums. But before he can investigate further, he supposedly dies in a car accident.

Fast forward 10 fateful years. On the day she\'s getting engaged to Xianghe, Youzhen spots Junxiang on the street and gives chase, but to no avail.

Never did she expect that he would reappear in her life as a totally different person, Minheng.

Is he Junxiang or not?

Acting-wise, the cast is as convincing as the old folks of Hong Kong soap opera A Kindred Spirit.

Yong-Jun, especially, deserves praise for his brilliant portrayal of two different roles.

As Junxiang, he is brooding and withholds his emotions.

(My only grouse is how un-17 he looks. He is, after all, 30 in real life!)

That\'s perhaps why the actor\'s more at home as Minheng, exuding Sensitive New Age Guy charms, laughing and crying easily.

Matching him teardrop for teardrop is the willowy, perpetually watery-eyed Ji-Woo.

Combined, their moving love story will make you sob buckets too.

Of course, there are also sweet moments, like when he makes it \'snow\' by throwing dried leaves all over her. And when it really does, he kisses her amid building snowmen.

Also, Winter Sonata\'s fluffy white landscape is so breathtaking you\'ll feel like signing up for the next winter tour package to Korea!

Satu lagi

5 faces = 1 million album copies sold

IN South Korea, you can sell a million copies of your album even if you\'re tone deaf - as long as you are a red-hot idol with legions of fans, that is.

Five A-list actors - including Winter Sonata\'s Bae Yong Jun (centre) and Romance\'s Kim Jae Won (second from right) - got together recently to front a five-disc compilation album featuring drama theme songs and other pop ballads.

Entitled Same Feeling II, it sold a whopping one million copies in barely three months.

Over 100,000 posters were also snapped up by fervent fans.

New article dari Yongjun.net

BYJ Special Interview With Japan\'s Magazine

Adapted from BYJ’s Official Board. Translated into Korean Junna (From Japan); Translated into English by White, Edited By Joyce.

**Q: Reporter\'s Question
**A: BYJ\'s Answers

Q : So far, you have appeared in several “darker roles” like in “First love”, “Have We Really loved?\" and more mainstream and gentlemanly ones like in “Hotelier” and “Winter Love Story”. Which role, do you think, has most similarities with your real character?
A : I have a combination of both. Gentle as well as tough personalities. But I like sports. I could be a diplomat. But actually I don\'t know which character I have played is  closest to that of my own .

Q :What kind of sports do you enjoy?
A : Golf, but actually I enjoy all kinds of sports. I also frequent ski places and play snowboard.

Q :  How do you prepare yourself for the various type of roles
A : I often watch movies. As I have a busy schedule, I may not have time to watch drama. But I have many films on DVD which I often watch.

Q : How many DVDs do you have?
A : Well, it may sound exaggerated but I think I can own a rental shop! I have many stuff (laugh). If I think it is a good film, regardless of its genre, I will buy and watch the DVD.

Q : Then, what one is your favourite film ?
A : I think its quite difficult to pinpoint any one film since all films have their good points. But for overseas productions,  I think  “Shakespeare in Love” is interesting. As for local Korean films , I think “Gong Gong Eu Jeok” (Public Enemy) is a good one.

Q : I was told that you have established a reputation for speaking good English since “Hotelier\'?
A : No, I don\'t think so. I am  still studying English. I don’t think I am good at English yet. I think I need to practice more.

Q : How do you relax during your free time since you are so busy everyday?
A : I spend my free time watching films peacefully at home  after a hard day’s work. Only when I think I have done a good job, I can relax. But if I think I didn’t do a good work on a particular day, I will reflect on my conduct and try to find out the reason why I hadn’t done as well as I should have. I don’t look as if I would “tumble” easily. But actually I used to agonise over small matters, sometimes mere trivial things.

Q : I heard that you have finally decided on your film project.
A : Yes,  I haven’t gone through the full concept of the film yet but we are going to trash out the details sometime in next January or February.

Q: Is that so? The news was quite unexpected. How are you spending your rest days now?
A: I listen to music or read a book. I don\'t just read only one book at a time. I will have a book at home and I will have another one in my car to keep me occupied when I am travelling etc...Actually I keep books in various places so that I can pick them up easily when I want to read them.

Q : I cried many times when I watched the last episode of “Have We Really Loved?”, have you ever teared when you watch your own drama?
A : When I am filming a drama, I don’t really have time to monitor my performance because of the tight filming schedule. But I will be totally engrossed and “wrapped up” in my role (感情移入)during the filming.

Q :  I can see your many advertisements as I walk along the street.  What do you think of that?
A : Is that so ?. I didn’t get to see them really.. Ummm..I must be too preoccupied with other thoughts. Maybe I should walk more freely (so that I can get to see the advertisements).

Q : If you have a 100 yen now, how would you spend it ?
A : I will donate it. I appeared in a role who was diagnosed with leukaemia/cancer in “Have We Really Loved?”.  Subsequently, the staff of the drama created a club called “Woojeongsa” to help people inflicted with leukaemia. I actually sold cups in a charity “bazaar” organised by the club. I would like to donate to the needy and do charity work.

Q: Last but not least, can I ask a favour from you. Could you say afew words to your Japanese fans.
A: I want to visit Japan someday. I hope I get a chance to see all of you and hope you like my drama. Hopefully I will have a chance to do some promotion activities in Japan. Thank You.

Re: BAE YONG JUN

hi.. masih demam aidilfitri ke??

ada sesiapa dah tengok drama BYJ tahun 1999 keluaran MBC? Have We Really Love atau tajuk lain dia True To Love?

cite dia memang betul2 best.. shahdu gile.. kena siapkan berkotak2 tisu.. sesape yg lemah semangat tu.. be prepare.. sebab BYJ mati dalam cite ni..

Ibubapa Hyunsoo tinggal di New Zealand. Di Korea Hyunsoo tinggal bersama Shinhyung(lecturer di universiti tempat Jaeho&Hyunsoo belajar). Dlm proses tu Jaeho menggunakan Shinhyung utk mendekati Hyunsoo... tapi akhirnya Jaeho jatuh cinta dgn Shinhyung yg 3 thn lebih tua.

Bermacam2 peristiwa berlaku.. pertentangan dari semua pihak termasuk keluarga & pihak universiti(Shinhyung hampir dipecat). Hyunsoo yg dah jatuh cinta dgn Jaeho juga buat macam2 sampai Jaeho tidak diterima utk bekerja di mana2(kwn baik Jaeho juga menyebabkan dia bankrup)& terpaksa meminta pertolongan Hyunsoo (mmg ni rancangan Hyunsoo utk dpt balik Jaeho tak kira camnapun)....

wah.. pjg la pulak apa taknya ada 45 episod.. ok la nanti sambung balik...

Kita baru habis tengok cerita tu ..Sedihnye...especially part akhir2 tu,tak berhenti air mata mengalir. Tapi yang paling kita suka part awal masa dia belajar kat U dan nak pikat perempuan kaya tuh. Memang betullah orang kata this is the best work of BYJ.Karekter dia buat kita simpati kat Jaeho tu walaupun dia dikira bukanlah baik sangat.Memang impian dia nak kahwin orang kaya walaupun tanpa cinta untuk melepaskan diri dari kemiskinan tapi apakan daya dia jatuh hati pulak kat professor dia .

Tapi banyaknye halangan tapi yang paling geram sekali kat supposed best friend dan adik kandung dia tu. Sanggup dia buat abang dia macam tu. Abang dia bela dia dari kecil macam tak mengenang budi.Yang perempuan kaya tu pulak sampai last barulah dia lepaskan Jaeho bila dah tak sanggup lagi tengok dia sengsara.Tapi betul bestlah cerita nihhh

Re: BAE YONG JUN

Hi, just want to introduce some touching story about drama \'Have We Really Love\' (in korean is \"WJS\"), here got some article from wjs websites:
*****************************************
MBC-TV \"WJS\" fan club\'s voluntary services attract attention

A scene from MBC TV drama
\"Have we really loved\"
Fan club of the drama \"Have we really loved\" (abbreviated as WJS in the following), which was aired by MBC in 1999, attracts our attention because they keep promoting actively the mutual friendship and voluntary services to help the less fortunate people even now after two years have passed.

\"WJS\", with Bae Yong Jun, Kim Hye Su, Yoon Son Ha and Lee Na Young as the cast, portrayed a pure love that transcends the reality. During its airing, it received attention despite its low viewer\'s rating, because of the enthusiastic maniacs with the message board of drama in the center of their activities.

Representative fan club, which is active at present, is \"Woo Jung Sa Rang Hoi (WJS club)\" at the internet site from \"Netian\".

\"WJS club\" consists of ca. 2300 members of diverse age groups and occupations such as lawyer, medical doctor, or office worker. It has monthly regular meetings and there are even foreign branches in USA (New York and Los Angeles), Canada (Vancouver), and Germany.

After having the first meeting in early June, 1999, they hold grand scale event every year on January 30 (when WJS started airing) and on June 24 (when WJS finished being aired) inviting performers such as Bae Yong Jun and Yoon Son Ha and the staffs as well as singer Choi Jin Young, who made the theme songs of drama.

Their early meetings were limited simply to the promotion of friendship and the activities related to the drama just like any other fan clubs.

However, as meetings were repeated and sympathy was formed among the members, who said \"let\'s do more meaningful activities\", they started doing voluntary services.
These days, they visit once a month Haelimwon in Boochun, Kyung-gi, a nursery center for handicapped children, and spend time together with the children.

In addition, they visit slum quarter Goorodong in Seoul, which was the stage of WJS, and help secretly juvenile breadwinners (young people who have to earn money to support their family) and support the sister juvenile breadwinners in Pusan as well.

The members of fan club deposit donations voluntarily at specified account of bank and the gathered money is used as expenses for the voluntary services.

Besides \"WJS club\", there are 5 or 6 fan clubs of \"WJS\" that have on- and off-line meetings actively through internet.

The president of \"WJS club\" Jumi says,
\"we are doing diverse activities with a purpose to develop further our ties formed through a good drama\" and expressed,
\"I appreciate it so much that the members participate in the events voluntarily and there are still people who want to join the membership.\"

At the time when crude abuses and slanders overwhelm the message board instead of constructive critics and suggestions of opinions, we can adopt activities of WJS club as a model of constructive fan club culture.

Interview with BYJ

This is the translation of interview with BYJ on June 07, 1999.
WJS club sent BYJ the questions and he sent his answers per e-mail.

Interview with Bae Yong-jun

Q1.The character Jaeho appears to be somewhat opportunistic from certain perspective, but one cannot help finding him charming. What do you think is the appeal of the character Jaeho?

As you know already, in the drama, Jaeho\'s mother abandoned him because life became so difficult after his father died earlier. Therefore, for his career and success, Jaeho develops a distorted ambition that the highest goal of life is \'money\'.

However, he shows a \'human wandering\' when he realizes through a true love that money is not everything. And exactly that aspect, that innocent and sometimes extremely weak human nature seems to be Jaeho\'s appeal.

Another aspect is his fragile sensitivity about feeling love.

He decides to hate his mother who abandoned him, but in much deeper longing than his hate, he looks for a woman like his mother that can caress his wound. That woman is Shinhyung. And in Shinhyung, he discovers \'love\' of mother\'s bosom. Because he reflects us wandering in search of that \'love\', he might appear even more beautiful.

Q2. Among WJS maniacs, because of their devotion to this drama, many people got \"WJS addiction\" that makes them to feel melancholy about everything these days and become unable to believe in love. Don\'t you perhaps have such symptoms as well?

On the contrary, I am feeling clearly again the existence of fundamental love that is the light of the world.
Kang Jaeho is enclosed within the difficulties of life and looks upon the world only in pretence. But as Jaeho starts to feel through Shinhyung the existence of \'love\' that has only been placed deep in his heart, the color of the world, which Jaeho was making, changes.

Therefore, Jaeho suffers through spiritual wandering and pain and because of it, Shinhyung gets another wound but she endures it willingly. It seems that these aspects of Jaeho and Shinhyung are touching deeply the hearts of the viewers.

WJS evokes tears from the viewers but provides hope at the same time.

This drama presents the fact that people go through wandering and conflict much because of the various aspects of love and how they can heal their wounds.

\'Love\', which is the origin of the world: I believe I became addicted to that love.

Q3. You decided for this drama after a long time. What were your feelings when you were asked for the role and what is the background of accepting it?

Above all, I liked the role of Kang Jaeho. The character that believes vain desire as the truth of life and lives in lies and hypocrisy, but becomes rescued by grabbing the faint rope called love. The character that contains the words \'devilishness\' and \'innocence\' entangled together in a complex manner.

The roles that I played so far were characters that are always on the side of righteousness, intellectual and composed such as a scholastic model student, a film director, or a part-time lecturer and a best seller author in one. Many times, I could not get rid of the thought that it is Bae Yong Jun acting when I was watching myself playing those roles.

However, this time, I had confidence that I could stand before the viewers not as Bae Yong Jun but as a living \'Kang Jaeho\'.

Getting out of the image of neat and smart young noble that was shown so far, and playing the character, which is an incarnation of desire but undergoes conflict for love, could be seen by the viewers as a changed Bae Yong Jun.
That\'s why I chose WJS.

Q4. Although this drams falls back in the audience rating, it is evoking an explosive reaction from the netizens. As a main character, what do you think are the reasons?

I think WJS is a drama with many interesting stories. It is not a drama that just wants to be watched but a drama that urges the viewers to feel and think and talk about it. Frankly speaking, it is a drama with more to \'think about\' than just to \'watch\'. Probably that\'s why a group that can be called \'maniacs\', which pours out their continuous love regardless the general popularity, could be established.

Besides, when people mean maniacs, they mean small number of members. In contrast, WJS is getting love from so many people. Isn\'t cyber space such as PC communication and web the place where opinions of such maniacs can be revealed fastest and gathered together? When I look around the boards at Internet, there are so many opinions that dig so deep into the drama that they even make me to say automatically \"how frightening\".

As such opinions are gathered on the web site, people seem to recognize the rule that WJS maniacs = netizens.

WJS is really a special drama and is receiving \'a very special love\' that could never be seen in any other drama.

It seems like just yesterday when I started the filming while rubbing my cold hands and stamping my feet. And already the second half of the drama is beginning.

Until the day the sweltering heat of high summer starts, until the moment when the drama ends, I hope WJS would radiate more light with the extraordinariness made together by the producer, the performers and WJS maniacs.

http://www.junghwa.zio.to/new_board.htm atau

http://www.xiaotong.net/

kalau bernasib baikla.. sebab ada notis dari MBC nak bersihkan drama yg lama2 dan website tu link terus dgn MBC.. satu lagi website yg atas tu dlm bhs korea & yg bwh tu bhs cina... tapi still blh tengok gambar2 yg menarik...

bagi eyka cite ni & watak BYJ is the best!! memang berbaloi beli vcd dia.... berhari2 teringat kat Jaeho..

lepas tengok cite ni rasa macam semua kenangan Jaeho adalah memori kita sendiri.. macam kitalah org yg berada di samping Jaeho di saat2 akhir hidupnya.. bukan tu je rasa macam kita yg bercinta dgn Jaeho.. aaarrgghhh airmata turun macam air terjun..
