More than 14,000 still missing one month after quake and tsunami Monday 11th April, 10:31 AM JST
TOKYO —
Over 14,000 people remain missing and there are few signs of the crisis at a crippled nuclear power plant ending soon as Japan on Monday marked one month since a massive earthquake and tsunami hit northeastern and eastern regions.
About 151,000 survivors are staying in 2,300 shelters following the country’s worst ever natural disaster, but work to build temporary housing has made little progress amid massive amounts of rubble, including boats left on the rooftops of destroyed buildings.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan plans to hold a press conference later Monday to explain how his government plans to help local people reconstruct ravaged areas, bring the radiation-emitting Fukushima Daiichi power plant under control and boost the battered economy.
A total of 13,013 people were killed in 12 prefectures, including the northeastern prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, and 14,608 were missing in six prefectures as of 7 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Police Agency.
Overwhelmed by the scale of coastal areas almost flattened by the tsunami, the local governments in Sendai, Higashimatsushima and Minamisanriku, all in Miyagi Prefecture, have yet to be able to tally the number of people missing. |

Monday April 11, 2011Can M'sians behave like the Japanese during a calamity?Monday Starters - By Soo Ewe Jin
I DO not like sales. I cannot understand why people would brave massive jams, noisy crowds and long queues just to buy something at a discount.
But I was just imagining what would happen if, say, a power blackout were to occur at the peak of such a sale.
Imagine the hypermarket in pitch darkness, the counters not working, and only a handful of security guards around. What would the people do?
I did a random survey and the unofficial conclusion is that all hell will surely break loose. The sale will become a free-for-all.
There will be mayhem as people rush out with whatever is in their hands. Some may even go back to the racks to pick up extra items.

I generally believe in the inherent goodness of people so I hope this will never happen.
But let's take a look at what happened in Japan when the earthquake and tsunami struck.
The tragedy is still unfolding. We see the pain and the suffering and the great loss to human lives and property.
We see humanitarian efforts in full swing. And the most amazing thing that unfolded before our very eyes is the discipline among the Japanese people.
One email making its rounds accurately summed up the 10 best traits observed in this tragedy.
Among them:
There was dignity: The people queued up for water and groceries and not a rough word or a crude gesture was observed.
There was grace: The people bought only what they needed for the present, so everybody could get something.
There was order: There was no looting in shops, no honking and no overtaking on the roads. Just understanding.
There was tenderness: Restaurants cut prices. An unguarded ATM is left alone. The strong cared for the weak.
There was conscience: When the power went off in a store, people put things back on the shelves and left quietly.
In similar situations elsewhere, tragedies like this have often brought out the best and the worst in us.
Our humanitarian outreach, our concern and our prayers remind us we are decent human beings. The downside is that looters run riot, business people spike up their prices, and people grab more than what they need.
Here we are thankful that we are not put to the test but if you look at things objectively, you may not have much hope that our people can be as disciplined as the Japanese.
It is a perennial problem for us, come festive seasons, for some essential items to be suddenly scarce or to even disappear from the shelves. We have to regularly enforce laws against profiteering.
When we balik kampong, we break all the traffic rules to get to where we want to go.
Cutting queues seems to be a national pastime and the fact that we can even subscribe to a service that tells us if we have a traffic summons must surely imply that we do consistently break the law and just hope we don't get caught.
Isn't it scary to think what might happen if we are faced with tough situations where our personal behaviour can have tremendous ramifications on overall civil order?
The secret, I believe, is to behave right in good times so that it will be natural to do likewise in tough times.
We need to understand the concept of sacrifice for the greater good. Then we will be a great society. And a great people.Deputy executive editor Soo Ewe Jin believes likes this quote by author George Mikes, “An Englishman, even if he is alone, forms an orderly queue of one.”

Sungguhpun bukan Islam & makan vavi
Dalam media cetak ke elektronik ke haper, selamba jek celebrity ke, pelawak ke, host rancangan ke even org awam kutuk2 pemerintah... kalau x betul jek di mata mereka mmg habihlah kena... Sbb tu pemerintah depa susah nak angkat muka (berlagak) dgn rakyat... mmg untung besar la negara yg ada media tak senget... Even media k'jaan depa (NHK) tu, sungguhpun xde kutuk2, tapi xdelah pagi petang siang malam dok puji2 pemerintah depa & kutuk pembangkang... Kebanyakan rancangan/program berbentuk ilmiah... susah nak cari yg menyesakkan kepala dgn mengampu ke hulu ke hilir even NHK |

Jepun keluar amaran tsunami selepas gempa kuat dekat Fukushima
2011/04/11
- AFP |
