The name Taufik Batisah may be foreign to Malaysians. The English debut album by the winner of the first Singapore Idol competition is not marketed in this country.
Still, Taufik's name may be as well-known as Mawi's in his own country. His win against Mawi at the Anugerah Planet Muzik 2006 event last March was the evidence.
Taufik won in the Most Popular Male Artiste category, an award determined by fans who voted through forms found in magazines, and SMSes. Mawi, who is also popular in Singapore, lost to Taufik.
There are similarities between Taufik and Mawi. Just like Mawi, Taufik was not born into a well-to-do family. He is also a hero within the community in Singapore.
"My family's normal and I have been through hard times. I will forever remember that and it will stop me from forgetting who I am.
"I still remember how my family went through hardship when my parents divorced. We lived in a 2-room flat with my brother and mother.
"So as to go on with life, my mum worked as a building cleaner and I worked as a pizza delivery man to save money," said Taufik.
It was only when his elder brother has started working that his family's luck changed for the better. Now Taufik refreshes his family with his career as a singer.
So as to remind him of the hard times he had gone through, Taufik still keeps his mother's nametag that she used while working as a cleaner.
"Now I paste the nametag in my room and I will look at it all the time. It's a constant reminder for me and I will not forget where I came from.
"As a gift, I keep all my trophies in my mother's room...including this APM trophy. It's more meaningful to me. I hope my mother will be happy to see my success," said Taufik. Aww... so sweet!!! :love:
Taufik promises not to forget himself when he achieves greater success in the future. He will never forget his hard times.
DID NOT DEFEAT MAWI
Even though his name defeated Mawi, Taufik does not want to claim it as that. He does not feel comfortable when he is said to have defeated other artistes.
"I didn't defeat anyone but I am thankful because fans voted for me for this award. This may be my luck. I have met Mawi and I like befriending him...he has a good heart and a natural.
"I will do better in the future," said Taufik, who hopes to come up with a Malay album soon.
PREPARED TO MOVE TO KUALA LUMPUR
Taufik admits that there are many popular artistes in Malaysia and Singapore who come up with albums produced in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He does not have any problems with moving to Malaysia if his career calls for it.
"I'm ready to migrate if my migration to Kuala Lumpur promises to expand my wings in the music industry.
"I really hope to be a successful singer, so migration will not be a big problem for me," adds Taufik.
