UPDATE (12.50am): Republic of Singapore Navy Ships sail for Indonesia

In addition to the two Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) C-130 aircraft, one of which participated in the search and locate (SAL) operation earlier today, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) had also put a Formidable-class frigate, Landing ship tank, Missile corvette and Submarine support and rescue vessel on standby.

At 11.55pm Sunday evening, Second Minister for Defence Mr Chan Chun Sing sent off the Formidable-class frigate (RSS Supreme) and Missile corvette (RSS Valour), which were being deployed in support of the SAL operation in Indonesia.

Mr Chan commended the RSN servicemen for mobilising at short notice and wished them well for the operation. He added that it was not the first time Singapore and Indonesia were working together and the close relationship that both countries shared would facilitate the operation.

“I believe that with the strong relationship that Indonesia and Singapore has built up over many years, which transcends all levels from the highest political level to the military commanders, we will be able to work closely and execute the search and locate operation effectively.” he said.

It's currently 22:24PM local time, both search from sea and sky have ended.
Victims's family have left the crisis center now, and all transported to Juanda International Airport's hotel. They promised to give the victim's family more explanation at 8AM tomorrow morning
Before they leave, SAR gives an explanation that the plane might do an emergency landing in Teluk Kumai

Device onboard Airasia flight QZ8501 can locate missing plane, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 — The Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) installed inside AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 can show the location and condition of the missing aircraft, according to an aviation expert.  Former Malaysia Airlines (MAS) chief pilot Captain Datuk Nik Ahmad Huzlan Nik Hussain said the ELT could still show the location of the aircraft even in an emergency situation.

Based on the battery condition, he said the ELT’s signal could last up to 48 hours and within the period, the signal from missing aircraft should be able to be detected.

“If the aircraft crashes, the ELT can still function, but it will depend on its condition after the crash as the ELT is usually installed in the cockpit, at the door or at the tail of the aircraft.

“However, right now, the flight is missing without any signal from either its transponder or the ELT. So, we are not sure whether it has crashed or not,” he told Bernama.

The AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 was carrying 155 passengers comprising 138 adults, 16 children and an infant, and seven crew members when it disappeared from radar while enroute from Surabaya to Singapore this morning.  The Airbus A320-200 aircraft with registration number PK-AXC took off from the Juanda International Airport at 5.30 am (Surabaya time) before losing contact with the air traffic control centre at 7.24 am (Surabaya time).  It was scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 8.20 am.  — Bernama

Pencarian pun dihentikan.

"Helikopternya baru terbang sekitar 63 nautical mill. Cuaca buruk sekali, awannya sangat rendah sehingga helikopter terpaksa balik lagi ke Pontianak," jelas Komandan Lanud Supadio Pontianak, Kolonel Tedy Rizalihadi.

Waktu Indonesia Barat kalo tak silap bezanya sejam dr malaysia. kalo derang detect dlm pukul 12.00 WIB, maksudnya dlm pukul 11.00 waktu Msia sebegitu. Siapa2 kat indon sekarang tolong betulkan. Mungkin radar bandara pontianak semasa pukul 12.00 tu berjaya mengesahkan kedudukan kapal terbang tu? ELT senyap jah, katanya.

I landed in Singapore 1 hour before this AirAsia was due in this morning and the turbulence was pretty bad on my flight even when it looked pretty clear out the window.

Was also on a AirAsia flight to Langkawi last month and experienced the worst turbulence ever, flight took a massive hit from something.

Turbulence is bad in this area most of the time.

But there would have been a few flights on the same path infront and behind of this plane so the losing contact is a bizarre one and the transponder should still have been on.
