Mr Monk and the Earthquake
episode 11 season 1

Synopsis
A wealthy businessman is apparently killed in an earthquake, but Monk is sure that he was murdered by his wife. The trauma of the earthquake temporarily worsens Monk's condition by causing him to talk gibberish, but he recovers soon enough to communicate his suspicions to the beleaguered captain, who has his hands full with fires, false alarms, and looters. Meanwhile Sharona is forbidden to enter her apartment because of earthquake damage, so she and Benjy are forced to spend the next few days with Sharona's snippy and competitive sister, Gail. They are quickly joined by Monk and Sharona's latest Mr. Wrong, whom the viewer knows is really the lover of the dead man's wife. Complications arise when the conspirators decide that Sharona knows too much and Monk, who has mentally reconstructed the crime, again loses the power to speak English after going through an aftershock. The captain, who has just begun to investigate a second murder in Sharona's neighborhood, receives an untelligible call from Monk. Fortunately Gail is there to tell him the one thing he needs to know--Sharona is in trouble.

Notes
David Sparrow gets a brief, voice-only role in his recurring role as Sgt. Cargill, talking to Stottlemeyer over the radio, but he doesn't get credited at the end. (Contributed by Gislef)

Quotes
Darryl (about Monk): I should write about him!
Sharona: You should. Nobody would believe it. You'd have to put it in the science fiction section.
Monk (guessing at Charades): "The Man Who Came To Dinner."
Gail: How did you know that?
Monk: Six words, "The Man Who Came To Dinner," it's about a guest who wouldn't leave, and you were looking at me. . . .

Dr. Kroger (about Monk): He's having a disassociative episode. The trauma of the earthquake probably shorted out the occipital lobe in the left hemisphere of his brain.

Sharona: Mothers are great to talk to. You know, except for mine.

Father Hatcher (about Monk): Where is he from?
Sharona: Neptune.

Sharona: She and her husband practically saved this church. They're like saints.
Monk: Your saint didn't pay for her candle.

Gail (grabbing Disher's ID): Nice picture! Why'd you get rid of the mustache?
Disher: My captain has a mustache. I shaved mine so that people could tell us apart.

Gail: So are you going to wait for him [Monk]?
Disher: No. I can't. If he's washing up, he could still be another three or four hours.

Gail: Are you taking a bath in mineral water?
Monk: Uh, the tap water was a little rusty.
Gail: Well, enjoy it because that bath is costing me ninety-five dollars.

Stottlemeyer: Lieutenant, either fix that pipe or buy everybody an umbrella.

Stottlemeyer: I'm surprised you can talk with a broken jaw.
Perp: I don't have a broken jaw.
Stottlemeyer: Not yet. (Punches him.)

Benjy: Why can't we stay at Monk's?
Sharona: Because I'd go crazy slower at Aunt Gail's.

Monk: Don't worry about Sharona. She won't get in the way.

Gail (seeing Monk): What's he doing?
Sharona: He's counting the bricks in the wall.
Gail: Good. I've always been curious about that.

Goofs
When Sharona and Monk talk to Kroger, Monk's clock says 10:00. In the next scene at the Rutherfords, the clock says 10:20 and Sharona has already finished making tea and is ready to pour. We don't know how close the two homes are, but we see crowded streets, rerouted traffic, emergency vehicles, etc. so. . . how'd they get there so quick? (contributed by Gislef)

When Monk is calling Sottlemeyer at the precinct house to tell him who killed Rutherford, despite the aftershock rattling the scene, the painting on the wall doesn't move and the lamps or even the shades on the lamps behind him don't shake. (contributed by Gislef)

Analysis
More intense than most episodes so far, this one manages a great deal of suspense even though we know who did it from the beginning and quickly discover the identity of the accomplice as well. We get a glimpse of Sharona's dysfunctional family, meeting her jealous and manipulative sister and discovering that neither of them cares much for their mother. We also find out what we may have suspected already, that Sharona is a devout Catholic. There's one short laugh when Lieutenant Disher, in his undershirt, is soaked to the skin by a malfunctioning fire sprinkler, and one moment of compassion for Benjy when Monk prematurely blurts out "Spiderman!" as the title of the movie Benjy is trying to depict in Charades, but there's not much development in the relationships between the main characters. One satisfactory element is Stottlemeyer's chance to show his abilities as both a detective who can tell from a blood stain that a body has been moved and a cop enjoying the moment as he ties up a perp with his own jacket in place of handcuffs. Disher's flirtation with Sharona's sister, or rather hers with him, provides one of the few light moments. The episode as a whole is less family-oriented than previous episodes, with more violence, implied sex, and (mild) profanity than usual. I give it a PG13--I mean a seven out of ten.

Cultural References
TV: "Tobor the Great!"
Typical cheesey 1954 sci-fi movie about a robot that develops human emotions thanks to a young boy who befriends it. Might have been used because it features a young fatherless boy whose mother is dating. Benjy and Sharona, anyone? (Contributed by Gislef) More Info

Mr. Monk and the Marathon Man
epsiode 9 season 1

Synopsis
A woman is murdered during the San Francisco marathon and Monk suspects her married lover, Trevor McDowell, even though he was running in the race. Although McDowell disappears from the video tape of the race less than halfway through and reappears only at the end, the data from a computer chip indicates that he was present at all checkpoints during the race. After interrogating the murdered woman's ex-husband as a possible suspect only to find that his alibi is probably credible, a frustrated Stottlemeyer provides Monk with a brilliant suggestion--that the computer chip was passed off to someone else during the race. Monk meanwhile has the chance to visit his hero, an aging runner from Nigeria whom Sharona briefly suspects may be the murderer's accomplice--a theory Monk refuses even to consider. When Monk figures out what really happened, he must catch the murderer himself to prove his theory.

Notes
# Please submit viewer comments relating to this episode to the proper Forum.
# No new episodes were aired August 30 or September 6 because of the U.S. Open coverage. This is the first original episode to be shown since "Mr. Monk and the Other Woman" on August 23.
# The sunglasses hanging from the neck of Captain Stottlemeyer's undershirt reflect a real-life habit of Ted Levine's, which may have begun when he played Alan Shepard in From the Earth to the Moon.

Quotes
Sharona: You're in great shape.
Monk: No. If I can't find the remote, I just watch whatever's on.

Sharona: You couldn't tell me over the phone?
Monk: I wanted to see your face light up when I told you. (Sharona glares.) Okay, I'll take a rain check on that lighting up thing.

Sharona: You should have ignored the stupid sweater.
Monk: It was askew.
Sharona: So what? So what? Why can't you just let people be askew? I mean, what are you, the Askew Police?
Monk: Yes, I'm the Askew Police.

Monk (about to shake hands with five people): It's a stampede. Get a wipe ready.

Monk: I had a life before we met.
Sharona: I know you had a life. I just didn't know it involved gym shorts and taking showers with other guys.
Monk: I didn't shower with other guys. I had a note from my doctor.

McDowell: I screwed up big time.
Stottlemeyer: How long have you been screwing up?

Monk: How's it going in there?
Stottlemeyer: It's going great. Except he (the suspect) wants to know what that little squeaky noise behind the mirror is.

Stottlemeyer: The smudge stays. You go.

Monk (to Tonday): I've admired you ever since I was a strong child.
Sharona: Young child.

Sharona (about to run a race with Monk): This should be easy for you. You're good at touching poles.

Goofs
# As Stottlemeyer is ordering the cops not to touch or lean on anything, a cop in the background can be seen leaning with bare elbows against the balcony. (Contributed by ?)
# At the very end of the episode when Tonday gives Adrian the headband, you'll notice a rather large Grand and Toy truck drive past them. Grand and Toy is only available in Canada--it's a stationery store. (Contributed by Kim. KJones adds that the Grand and Toy truck is a giveaway that the episode was filmed in Toronto and must have been missed in the editing. The comment in its original version has been moved to the Forum for this episode.)
# The viewer comment asking how Monk could have beome a detective when he's had OCD all his life has been moved to the main Forum for general discussion. Responses, anyone?
# The USA Network website lists Hy Conrad as the writer. This doesn't match the on-screen credit of Mitch Markowitz. (Contributed by Gislef) My note: Oddly, the official site made several errors in the episode synopsis and credits, most of which have now been corrected. They now list David Breckman and Tom Sharpling as the writers. I believe, however, that Mitch Markowitz is correct and have retained that information here. CarolT

Analysis
Like "Mr. Monk and the Psychic," this episode reveals the murderer's identity in the opening scene; the enjoyment comes not from figuring out who did it but from figuring out (or watching Monk figure out) how it was done. We get a glimpse of Monk's past and learn that he was once a runner but his high school athletic career was ruined by an "incident" in which his OCD publicly revealed itself and he was left at the finish line. Such glimpses make his present condition more understandable and increase the viewer's sympathy. We also find that Monk, however annoyingly distracted he may be by misbuttoned sweaters and smudges on two-way mirrors, is capable of hero worship and of dancing around feeling lighter than air in the shoes his hero gave him. And we even get a small insight into the mind of Captain Stottlemeyer, who appears to have a neurosis of his own--all that chewing gum probably means that the good captain is trying to give up smoking. The smudge scene is hilarious, as is Monk's pantomime of changing his clothes. With the usual clever dialogue, a charming scene involving Monk and the aging Nigerian runner he idolizes, and a chance for the captain to come up with a good idea that eventually leads Monk to the solution to the mystery, this episode is one of the most delightful of the series. The writers even take a pot shot at political correctness as Monk's compulsion to wipe his hands after a "stampede" of handshakes is mistaken for an aversion to touching someone of another race. If there's a flaw in this charming and clever episode (aside from the little glitch with the policeman's elbows), I missed it. Ten out of ten.

Penjenayah kali ni memang pandai rancang. Timing dia bagus benar. Tapi nampak sangat "victim yang dibunuh tu" dan dibuang ialah patung.... Nampak palsu sangat.

The Monk and The Other Woman - The sypnosis

When a lawyer and his assistant are murdered, suspicion falls on a disgruntled client whose burnt file is found in the wastebasket. When the suspect, Grayson, is also murdered, Stottlemeyer is certain that Grayson's neighbor, a pretty blonde named Monica Waters who has been feuding with Grayson for two years about her garage, is guilty of all three murders.

But Monk is attracted to Monica, who bears a slight resemblance to Trudy. Because Monica's absent husband had OCD, she understands Monk in a way that Sharona can't, which of course adds to the attraction. Even her garage is perfect, exactly the way Monk would want his garage to be organized if he ever had one. A touching bond forms between them until a call from Stottlemeyer leads him to suspect that Monica may really be the murderer.

Quotes

Monk: May I say. . .if I ever have a garage, I want it to be just like this.
Monica: I'm Monica Waters, and you are. . . ?
Monk (flustered): Ummm. . . Me.
Sharona: Monk.
Monk: Monk. Adrian Monk.

Monk: That doesn't make sense.
Stottlemeyer: Does everything have to make sense, Monk?
Monk: Yeah. It kind of does.

Sharona: You must be joking.
Monk: If I were joking, it would certainly be a lot funnier than this.

Monk: He's in Zurich, isn't he? At the Breinhoff Clinic?
Monica: How did you know that?
Monk: It's the best hospital in the world for psychological disorders. I'd be there myself. . . but I don't fly.

Todd Katterskill: You should be ashamed of yourself.
Monk: I am. Twenty-four/seven.

Monk: Is that impossible, that a woman like her could be interested in me? (Pause) Sharona. . . ?
Sharona: I'm thinking.

Monica: You don't like your food to touch?
Monk: I think most people don't like their food to touch. They just don't have the guts to admit it.

Sharona: I'm not going to come get you in the middle of the night.
Monk: You won't have to get me. I'm not a child, Sharona. (Pause.) I can't find my PJs.

Monk (checking his luggage): Toothbrush. Backup toothbrushes. Backup bristles for the backup toothbrushes.

Grayson: I'm calling my lawyer.
Stottlemeyer: Your lawyer's dead, sir. That's why we're here.

Monk (trying to improvise a cover story): That was Sharona. Her son got the lead in the school play.
Monica: Oh, really? What play?
Monk: Ghandi.
Monica: Ghandi? Is that a play?
Monk: I think they added a few songs. Do you want to come?
Monica: Oh, I think I'll be having a headache that night.

Monica: You don't like change, do you?
Monk: I have no problem with no change. I just don't like to be there when it happens.

Stottlemeyer: Monk, I'm sorry.
Monk: You don't have to say that.
Stottlemeyer: Yes, I do. The commissioner's making me.

Stottlemeyer: Grayson is the guy. If I had a farm, I'd bet it.

Stottlemeyer (after Grayson is found dead): That's it for Grayson. He's no longer a suspect.

Monk: How long were you married?
Monica: Oh, look. A jukebox.

Monk: The only danger I'm in is running out of talcum powder.

Monica: You're not eating.
Monk: I ate in the bathroom. I had some mints.
