I asked for ONE simple question - the name of your Teacher who teached you - stating that there are Boddhisatta in Thervada Buddhism. Nothing more, nothing less.

Can you give the name - YES or NO?

Does he have the right to LIE?
ANY claims which the speaker unable to verify or proof IS A LIE. That is BASIC RULE in any discussion.

He claims that in Theravada Buddhism, there are concept of Boddhisatta. And he claims that this concept have been taught to him by his teacher (who he had yet to name).

I know enough to know that there is no concept of Boddhisatta in Theravada Buddhism. Gautama Buddha DID NOT teach the Buddhists to rely on "other beings" to seek enlightenment. In Theravada Buddhism - the primary rule is - ONE MUST RELY ON ONESELF TO ACHIEVE ENLIGHTENMENT.

To all forumers (this column or other columns) - to make a claim WITHOUT proof IS A LIE. Speak ONLY if you can PROOF what you have said. Otherwise, do not speak.

Ven. W. Rahula (1996) from Buddhist mission KL for Buddha Sasana said that it is incorrect to identify Theravada tradition with only Arahang while those in Mahaiyanna would become Bodhisattva before achieving the state of Buddha.

This idea came from Orientalists from the West when they began studying Buddhism. Don't just accept whatever is written in the book but checking texts and traditions in Buddhist countries. Theravada n Langkawong tradition also accept Bodhisattva.

Greeks had already been involved in Buddhism, so Buddhism should not be new thing in the West. Some of Greek kings had also been mentioned in Buddhist texts like Milinda Panha stated that King Minander I as an Arahang (Lohang/Luohan). Minander I was a Greek. He talked with Brahman Nagasenna.

As a layman, we had learned basic things such as atthangiko ariya margg. it means the eight noble path to end suffering which was taught by lord Buddha Gautam.

Basically, from my layman understanding it is classified into three parts which are the prannya, seela, and semathi. What is this eight noble paths for? They are to help a being to achieve liberation from sangsar (sufferings). We should not only know about these but also must try to observe them together with chattawari ariyasattni or four noble truths which has its root source from tharmmajakr prarwarttna suttam. actually the first book that I had read is tharmmajakr (the wheel of tharmma) which has some part of the discourses of lord Buddha. There are also mentions about this in winaipidok (monastic teachings).

These three parts of pranna, seela, and semathi should not be separated but must be practiced together.

How do we understood these?
When I was a young teenage, I used to memorize them and observe them during wan phrah (wednesday) according to lunar calender. Some people chant these every morning. I just chanted them in front of buddha's picture/photo that I kept in my wallet then I bring the pic everywhere because I didn't have any friend, lord Buddha became my fren and still is a good fren. So, I just share it here for the benefit of those who are observing the path of lord Buddha as a way to thank him for his teachings : )

we divide this into:

first and foremost everyone must remember: sarwasamyag bhawitabhya (everything must be right)...

1. prannya (wisdom)

- ditthi (perception)
- sangkanpa (intention)

2. seela (morality, politeness)

- wacca (word)
- karmmanta (action)
- achiva (life)

3. semathi (attention, concentrate, focus)

- wiyayam (effort, usahak)
- smerti (awareness)
- semathi (concentration)

Ariyasatiya Chattawari

It talks about sufferings...

- dukho (sadness)

this is noble truth on characteristics of sadness. what are sadness? sadness are:

- janmo (birth)
- wriddhaburan (old)
- roga (sickness)
- wipatti (death)

how does sadness takes place? when all of the causal for sadness come together. being detached from pleasure is sadness. getting what we do not want is sadness. do not achieve what we want is sadness.

- samudaya (battle, war)

this is the noble truth causes of sufferings and sadness.

- iccha (desire, longing something), sukho (pleasure) and tanha (desire to be satisfied) is the cause for janmo (birth)... jakramiwa jiwane pariwartante sukhani cha dukhani cha... in life, pleasure and sufferings always filling each other like a wheel... how to deal with these if they keep causing beings being born in realms of sufferings?

- nirodha (destruct, control)

this is the truth to destruct sufferings and sadness.
- stop desire
- give away desire and pleasure
- leave the attachment, liberate ourselves from those causes, no attachment to the causes of sadness and suffer.

- margga (way)

this is the truth on the way to stop sufferings... enlight ourselves with the eight paths and observe them : )

I wish that it's not so difficult to be understood because these actually more to applications to human experience with environment around. I had faced many things since I was a little kid. When I came across this experience of lord Buddha, I think that these are those things that I had also experienced. It's actually experienced by everyone but we just do not realize it. Urm, I don't know if there is other explanations about this, I'm just sharing experience with Buddhist friends : )
