Wallabies fight back to beat Springboks on home soil
SYDNEY: Australia recovered from a nightmare start to beat South Africa 25-17 at Sydney抯 Olympic Stadium in their Tri-Nations clash yesterday.
The victory handed the halfback combination of George Gregan and Stephen Larkham a dream send-off in their last appearances on home soil for the Wallabies.
The Australians followed up their surprise win over New Zealand last weekend with a hard-fought victory, coming from 17-0 down after 10 minutes against a Springbok team missing most of their top players after coach Jake White decided to save them for this year抯 World Cup in France.
Australia dominated the match for long periods after recovering from a terrible start.
The Springboks scored two tries in the first 10 minutes through flanker Wikus van Heerden and winger Breyton Paulse, who intercepted an attempted long pass from Wallaby lock Nathan Sharpe and sprinted over from 50m.
Wing Mark Gerrard, flanker Stephen Hoiles and centre Matt Giteau all scored for the Wallabies, who did not take the lead until 11 minutes into the second half.
The sin-binning of Springbok hooker Gary Botha three minutes later allowed Australia to turn the screw and Giteau squirmed through a tackle on the line for what proved the decisive try. |

Rugby: Hard fight ahead
CHRISTCHURCH: The All Blacks and Springboks wrapped up Test match preparations yesterday predicting a physical forward battle in today抯 Tri-Nations rugby clash.
In a match which the All Blacks are expected to win handsomely, both camps also suggested that today抯 encounter at Christchurch抯 Jade Stadium could erupt at any stage.
"We抮e not here to make up the numbers," warned stand-in Springboks captain Johann Muller (pic), saying his pack was intent on dominating the All Blacks up front.
Australia never let the All Blacks pack settle when they beat them 20-15 two weeks ago in Melbourne, and Muller also saw that as an area for South Africa to exploit.
"It starts at first phase, it always does," he said. "When your tight five doesn抰 perform it makes it difficult for the rest of the team.
When reminded that he was on the receiving end of an All Black punch in a Test last year, Muller said that was not an issue.
All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, a frequent target of the sly punch, suggested it was a growing problem.
Veteran All Blacks forward Reuben Thorne was less diplomatic, saying if the referee did not police the game strongly then players could take matters into their own hands.
But no matter how the game is played out, there is no escaping that both camps are more concerned with the rugby World Cup in two months.
New Zealand have made seven changes to their side, to give more players game time, while South Africa have left their top 20 players at home and in Muller they have their fourth captain in as many games. |

Rugby: Late burst powers All Blacks win
South Africa抯 Ruan Pienaar (second left) is tackled by Chris Jack (right)
and Rodney So'oialo of New Zealand in their Tri-Nations rugby Test at
the Jade Stadium in Christchurch yesterday. All Blacks won 33-6.
CHRISTCHURCH: Three converted tries in the final 12 minutes carried the All Blacks to a 33-6 win over the Springboks in their Tri-Nations rugby Test here yesterday.
The win put New Zealand level with Australia at the head of the championship and set the stage for a classic showdown when the two teams meet in Auckland next week with both the Tri-Nations and Bledisloe Cup on the line.
But if the All Blacks were looking to settle their World Cup warm up with a confidence boosting performance against a Springbok "B" team they were mistaken.
Despite an overwhelming advantage with possession against a Springbok side who had left their top 20 players at home, for much of the game the All Blacks were uninspiring on attack.
They were unable to find a way through the swarming Springboks defence led by Wynand Olivier and Waylon Murray.
And on the rare occasions they did make telling breaks, the subsequent overlap was lost by an inaccurate pass.
While coach Graham Henry declared himself "reasonably happy" he believed that with the abundance of ball the All Blacks enjoyed they should have produced a more subtantial victory.
"We played most of the rugby. We looked like scoring most of the tries, I would have thought, and probably got a bit frustrated we didn抰 score earlier and that probably led to a wee bit more impatience and lack of discipline early.
"I think that抯 a fair reflection |

Rugby: Windfall for Wallabies if they win World Cup
SYDNEY: Australia抯 Wallabies will each receive a A$137,000 (RM410,000) bonus if they win this year抯 Rugby World Cup tournament, the Australian Rugby Union said yesterday.
The ARU said the figure, which includes a one-off payment of A$84,750 for winning the final, was reached after discussions with the Rugby Union Players Association.
"It correctly acknowledges the players |

Rugby: Injured Cusiter handed World Cup boost
EDINBURGH: Scotland scrum-half Chris Cusiter is expected to be fit for the World Cup despite the ankle injury he suffered in Saturday抯 31-21 victory over Ireland, the Scottish Rugby Union said on Sunday.
Cusiter had to be helped from the pitch during the closing stages of the Murrayfield match, but team doctor James Robson believes the player should be fit enough for the World Cup which starts on Sept 7.
"Chris is as good as we could have expected. On further inspection, (the injury) was a small isolated injury to his ankle ligaments," said Robson.
Scotland coach Frank Hadden will announce Scotland抯 30-man squad for the World Cup at Edinburgh Castle today.
CAPE TOWN: Loosehead prop Kees Lensing will lead Namibia when they face South Africa in a World Cup warm-up match here at Newlands Stadium today.
Lensing is contracted to the Coastal Sharks in South Africa where he抯 turned out in the Super 14 and will come up against a number of his teammates who are part of the Springbok team in today抯 match.
The Namibian team comprises a number of players who ply their trade in South Africa抯 Currie Cup competition, among them Piet van Zyl, Jacques Burger, Jacques Nieuwenhuis, Hugo Horn and Lensing.
It will be Namibia抯 second World Cup warm-up match after losing to a South African Students team two weeks ago.
This will be Jake White抯 first chance to see his Springbok team in action after the Tri-Nations competition.
The Boks head to Ireland on Friday to continue their preparations with a match against provincial outfit Connacht.
They also face Scotland before heading to France, where the World Cup kicks off on Sept 7 |

NS Wanderers out for a hat-trick of wins in Jonah Jones Sevens
By AFTAR SINGH
KUALA LUMPUR: Negri Sembilan Wanderers, powered by a Fijian international, will be out to chalk up a hat-trick in the Guinness Jonah Jones Rugby Sevens tournament at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara here this weekend.
The Negri side were the champions in 2004 and 2005. There was no competition last year.
Wanderers founder Abdul Jalil Borhanuddin said that no team had won the tournament for three consecutive times since the inaugural tournament in 1963.
揥e have a solid team, led by Fijian Joe Vola, to score a first. My boys are in high spirits. They played well in the NS Royal Sevens in Seremban last month and defeated Cobra in the final, |

Rugby: Cobra aim high
KUALA LUMPUR: Combined Old Boys Rugby Association (Cobra) hope to be third time lucky in the Guinness Jonah Jones Rugby Sevens tournament starting today at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara.
They were runners-up twice in the tournament and on both occasions lost to NS Wanderers in the final in 2004 and 2005. There was no competition last year.
Cobra team manager Raymond Rajayah said that this year they hope not only to reach the final but also to win the tournament, which would see the participation of five foreign teams.
揥e have been training continuously since winning the Johor Baru Sevens tournament in June. We also competed in the NS Royal Sevens and lost to NS Wanderers in the final.
揙ur mission in the Jonah Jones tournament is definitely to get the better of NS Wanderers, who denied us the title twice in the last two finals,'' said Raymond.
Five teams from Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand are among the 16 teams involved in the club competition.
Cobra are drawn in Group C with Hong Kong Select, Bandaraya Dragons and RMR Warriors.
Raymond said that they are in a tough group as the Hong Kong team have expatriate players and they definitely would play a robust game.
揟he two local teams in our group are no pushovers as they have several good players and will pose a threat to us in the preliminary rounds,'' said Raymond.
Raymond added that they are banking on two Fijians Kiri Rasolo Solo and Elbert Tuinamai and international Mohd Faiz Shamukhiddir to help them reach the final.
Meanwhile, New Zealand rugby legend Eric Rush, who is regarded as one of the best Sevens players in the world, will officiate at the tournament today |
