She's the only girl Idol-wannabe Taufik Batisah has asked to be his girlfriend.

And she's also the only girl to whom he's said those three words many women pray to hear their man say.

The words 'I love you' came easy for Taufik when they had to be uttered to 20-year-old Yana Arshad.

That and we're guessing young love makes you the sort to count an eight-month relationship as the kind of long-term love affair that leaves one's heart broken when it comes to an end.

'She was just amazingly sweet,' said Taufik of the mass communications graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

'But she also broke my heart. I tried asking her to take me back but she wouldn't.'

Good buddies now, Yana and Taufik were more than that for a good part of 2002.

No doubt many Taufik fans would give their SMS-ing finger to know what it's like to have dated the Usher-licious Idol.

And for ex-girlfriend Yana, it was an 'awesome' time.

After all, this is the guy she describes as a winning combination of a wistful romantic, smooth charmer and goofball.

'He was always cracking me up. I could never keep a straight face whenever I was with him,' recalled Yana.

But underneath that smooth exterior, even cool dudes like Taufik have their fair share of insecurity, which ultimately led to their break-up, Yana added.

THE BREAK-UP

Like any other puppy love romances, theirs suffered some setbacks.

'At one point, we were just arguing all the time and he was also feeling depressed a lot. After a while, I just couldn't take being the one who had to do all the cheering up,' said Yana.

'So I asked for a break.'

She puts the break-up down to a case of bad timing and the insecurities that Taufik harboured about himself.

'There were so many things going on in our lives at the time - I was busy caring for my ailing grandmother and juggling my studies, while he was busy trying to get his music career going,' she said.

'I didn't have that much free time to see him perform, and he took it kind of badly. At the same time, he became increasingly worried that he hadn't found a steady job after graduating from the polytechnic.'

That led to Yana footing many bills when they went out.

'I didn't see it as a big problem since I had an allowance, whereas he had no income as he didn't have a job. But I could tell Taufik's ego was bruised - he felt that he should be paying for me since he was the guy,' she said.

But it wasn't all that bad, if you listen to what Yana said of Taufik as a boyfriend.

It certainly seems as though he could teach men a few lessons about charming the ladies. At least before the women give him the heave-ho.

POPPING THE QUESTION

While most guys are content with just splurging on a candlelight dinner, Taufik decided to drop the 'g' (for girlfriend) question with, what else, a funky yet romantic serenade a few months after they met each other.

'He asked me if I wanted to go to Istana Park to spy on couples making out,' said Yana.

'I thought he was out of his mind.'

Puzzled but intrigued by Taufik's request, they soon found themselves in the romantic and not very well lit greenery of Istana Park.

'He started singing N'Sync's Girlfriend, and I was so engrossed in his performance that I didn't pay attention to what he was singing,' she said.

For the uninitiated, a main line of the song is: Would you be my girlfriend?

'I completely missed it, and simply told him he sang well when the song ended. He had to repeat the question. I was shocked as I wasn't expecting it at all,' added Yana.

'All the while, he was looking at me intensely and staring deep into my eyes. It just left me weak.'

But apparently not weak enough, as Yana cheekily created some suspense of her own.

'I lied that I couldn't give him an immediate answer and asked whether I could think about it. He tried to look tough and cool over my response, but I knew I had him,' said Yana.

However, she cried the minute she got home.

'The incident just left me all emotional, although I couldn't let Taufik know that. So I let it all out when I reached home and immediately called my best friend to tell her what had happened.'

GOOD MUSIC TOGETHER

Yana met Taufik in late 2001 after a mutual friend thought they could make good music together, literally.

'He was rapping more than singing at that time, and our friend thought he should be more versatile by trying out duets,' she revealed.

But no, it wasn't love at first sight.

'I didn't really think he was cute when I met him although I did think he had beautiful eyes,' said Yana.

She remembered vividly when something more to her budding friendship with Taufik crept in.

'He asked me to see him perform at a hip-hop festival in Downtown East and when I was running a little late, he called me on my handphone,' she recounted.

'Taufik sounded almost frantic when he learnt I was still on my way. I immediately got out of the bus and hailed a taxi.'

'I reached there just in time to see Taufik get on stage.'

Since she didn't know if Taufik had spotted her in the crowd, Yana rushed backstage to compliment his 'awesome performance'.

'When he saw me, he lifted me from off the ground and twirled me around,' she said.

'That's when I realised that there could be something more than just friendship.'

The couple started going on one-on-one dates soon after.

VAIN IDOL

And since looking good has to be part of any Idol's resume, it isn't surprising that Taufik's got some vanity issues of his own.

'He was pretty vain,' she laughed.

'On the one hand, his vanity meant that I had a snazzily-dressed boyfriend. On the other hand, it also meant that we couldn't go out on days that he didn't think he looked good.'

Foremost on Taufik's list of vanity complaints: A pimple flare-up.

A break-up notwithstanding, Yana and Taufik have remained close friends.

'I asked him recently when I could go to his house for a Hari Raya visit. Although I quickly added that it's more to see his mother rather than him,' she said.

'Can't let his head get too big, what with all the star business and all,' she joked.

And now that he's on his way to being a star, does Yana feel a tinge of regret about letting him go?

'I can't say I have regrets. But each time I see him on television, I can't help but remember all the great times we shared,' she said somewhat wistfully.

'But at least the memories are mine forever.'

Yana revealed that she and Taufik had discussed the possibility of getting back together early this year, but both had agreed that they should move on.

'If we're fated to be together, then we'll be together. If not, then the best thing to do is to move on. Right now, I'm thankful he still sees me as a friend,' she said.

Well, we're certain Taufik's thankful for Yana's friendship too.

He just wishes the next time a heart gets broken, it won't be his.

'Women seem to love breaking my heart,' said Taufik.

'Or maybe it's a hobby of mine - getting my heart broken.'

With his star on the rise, we're certain that hobby's not going to be of much use any longer.

anyway, kisah ni dah lama dah tahun 2004. so taufik sekrng single mingle. dia tak nak jadi cam mawi, bagi mataair merana. aku ada post pasal gosip dia yang dengan leandra tu kau dah baca apa dia kata? mawi patut belajar dari taufik cara2 menjawab soalan trick begini.
