First Teaser for Ikuta Toma's movie "No Longer Human"
The official website for Genjiro Arato‘s film adaptation of Osamu Dazai‘s novel No Longer Human has been updated with a new teaser.
A quasi-autobiography, the novel was Dazai’s final literary work before committing suicide on June 13, 1948. This film was made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Toma Ikuta stars as the self-destructive, Dazai-based main character who can’t seem to veer off his despair-ridden path in life. According to Tokyograph, Satomi Ishihara will play the woman he married, though he had several other women in his life.
“No Longer Human” will be released by Kadokawa Pictures in 2010.

T: We’ve talked about everything that can be said already.
K: How many times have we talked about our butai during interviews? (laugh).
H: Then let’s talk about what we’ve been doing recently.
T: I rode in Kazama’s car! It was with the three of us.
K: In last month’s Wink Up, Jimmy said “I want to be the first one to sit in Kazama’s passenger seat”, but actually, it was these two~
T: And at that time, Hasejun got out of the car along the way.
K: Should I say what happened that time… I understand (laugh).
H: It’s completely fine. Kazapon, explain it to the readers.
T: Kazama was driving us back home.
K: Right right. My car is a van, Toma sat in the back. And then Hasegawa wanted to sit in the back as well. Then Ikuta said to Hasegawa, “At a time like this, someone should sit in the passenger seat”.
T: Right, and I added a “ba~ka” at the end (laugh).
H: I was really irritated!
K: So then Hasegawa got mad because of those words and said, “Why does Toma get to decided who sits in the back!” Completely like what a child would say.
H: True, that was definitely childish.
K: From my point of view, in the situation where I’m giving them a ride home, they kept saying those kinds of things for me to hear (laugh). “Ne, do you dislike sitting in my passenger seat that much!? What is this, you people!” (laugh)
T: Maa, that’s the natural reaction (laugh)
K: I said “Don’t sit in it if you don’t like it”, and Hasegawa said “Kazapon, where is the closest train station from here?” (laugh)
T: He even said “I’ll walk home.” Kazama already said he’ll drive us back, what did he think he was saying?
K: So I said “Just sit properly,” and let him get on but he said “Kazapon, let me get off at that station” and he really did walk back. So Hasegawa-san, what excuse do you have to say at this point?
H: An excuse… Is it okay to say the truth?
K&T: Hahahaha!
H: I had a small argument with Toma at the start of that day. I was depressed over something and in the beginning Toma gave me some advice. But then in the middle, he started criticizing my way of life.
T: Eh~ Did I say things like that?
K: You did say it. But it was the right thing (laugh).
H: There was that kind of exchange and then Toma sat in the back seat first. I was very irritated when he said those things to me (laugh). It was an accumulation of everything.
K: At the end, when Hasegawa got out of the car, he closed the door of the passenger seat with all his might… I thought “This is my car!” (laugh)
H: I only remember it now after talking about this, but on some previous issue, the argument we had before at Ginza was almost the same as this situation. As expected, we can only talk about this on Wink Up (laugh).
T: Right right, Hasejun threw his umbrella.
K: Why do you both still do such things? When Hasegawa was in the butai gakuya, he got angry because he bumped into a chair. Me and Toma saw it and burst into laughter… There are these kinds of scenes too.
H: Ah~ There was that too (laugh). The role of being teased is popular~
K: But the amazing thing is even if they had a fight, everything returns back to normal the next day.
H: That’s because~, we can directly say our true feelings, only to each other. No matter how much we argue, there definitely won’t be any bitterness left afterwards.
K: That’s right, both of them are very manly.
T: Ah, during this butai, I nearly lost my temper at Kazama.
H: Oh, the topic of Kazama has appeared (laugh)! Until now, he was in the third person’s position!
K: Why are you so happy (laugh)? What? What happened?
T: Everyone was backstage, when the Juniors were starting to go on the stage, I said “Kazama, it should be that way”.
H: At that time, clearly it was Kazapon’s mistake, but somehow Kazapon doubted me (laugh).
T: I said, “Okay, hurry up and go there for stand by!” but he said “No, Hasegawa…” (laugh).
H: That didn’t have anything to do with me (laugh).
T: In the end, he said “Hai hai, I’ll do it like Toma-chan said.” (laugh)! That guy~ (laugh)!
K: Right right, things like that happen too (laugh). But being in Playzone this time, I fully feel that the three of us can’t make minor decisions.
T: It weird, our blood type are all A-type (laugh). By the way, Yamashita is also A.
K: Everyone is real~ly careless.

K: That’s true~ Toma is very attentive.
T: Everyone is too careless!
H: Toma is super meticulous. Overly feminine.

K: I think the considerate Toma is really great, but Toma isn’t very adaptable to other situations.
T: What is this? Is today the day to criticize my way of living (laugh)?
K: If we were with a lot of other attentive people, then it would be very great. But me and Hasegawa are super careless, so we need to compromise with each other.
H: Toma is really hardened.
T: What does hardened mean (laugh)? It should be “obstinate”. Starting just now, the things you’ve been saying in between are irritating (laugh).
H: Toma is like a samurai! I’m speaking with a samurai… I’ve thought this way before (laugh).
K: But because we have somehow who is so attentive, I think that’s why we can keep the current status.
T: Same. If everyone was careless, then it’ll become worse (laugh)!
K: I have to admit that I’m really careless. In terms of acting, I’ll pay a lot of attention to my lines but not towards other things.

W: Have you decided what to order?
H: Ano, what is today’s dessert?

K: Okay, Hasegawa, don’t say reckless things (laugh).

T: I want a pizza with half-boiled egg and asparagus. Hasegawa, do you want to eat some too?

K: To the readers of Wink Up, if you feel ridiculous for worrying about the fights these two have had, then you’ll understand how I feel (laugh). This is probably what it means to say “Conflicts will draw you closer.” I realized it after seeing the two of them. But is it possible to become closer without fighting (laugh)?
T: Maa, you’ll probably think “Cut it out!” when you’re watching it from the sideline (laugh).
K: That’s right. That’s why I’ve been going to MA’s gakuya recently.
H: Nowadays, I haven’t seen Kazapon in our gakuya, what have you been doing?
K: I’ve been in MA’s gakuya chatting or doing other things. The two of you are always playing that soccer game in the gakuya.
H: But right now, we see each other everyday. After Playzone ends, we’ll have less opportunities to see each other, I’ll be really lonely.
K: I’ll feel that way too. But we’ll definitely go out to eat together… Eh, Toma?
T: Ahh, sorry. I’m completely absorbed by the croquette (laugh). And then?
K: … we lost our friendship to the croquette (laugh). Lately, I haven’t been out with Yamashita. And also Jimmy, it’ll be very fun if we can go out together with our usual members.
T: That’s nice! I unexpectedly saw Yamashita in Shibuya the other day. It was when work ended and I was going to eat with Hasejun.
H: Ahh, that day when I went home halfway through.
K: Eh~ Again (laugh)!?
H: No no. I suddenly had a stomach ache…
T: And then afterwards I met Yamashita by surprise. I asked “What are you doing?” and he said “We just finished filming for the drama.” I haven’t seen him for a long time… but he hasn’t changed (laugh).
H: When this magazine comes out, the butai would have ended.
K: In this butai, Hasegawa’s role is really good.
T: Ahh, the selfish prince~ This role is really popular (laugh)! It’s really Hasegawa-like.
H: Even though it’s like that, Kazapon said to me before the performance started, “Hasegawa, do you need to take a sick leave for your cold?” And his face was serious.
K: Un, half of it was serious (laugh).
T: Also, Kazama can completely remember all of Hasegawa’s lines (laugh)~
H: But aren’t I the only one that can perform that kind of feeling?
T: Don’t say that yourself (laugh). But I really want to gather everyone together. Let’s all get together!
K: Kazama will definitely attend!
H: When that time comes, I’ll try not to leave halfway through (laugh).

WINK UP (NOV 2009) ~ TRANSLATION
WHOLEHEARTEDLY
After finishing filming for “Ningen Shikkaku,” Toma has been working without rest for the special drama “Yonimo Kimyou na Monogatari,” the movie “Seaside Motel,” ACUO’s CM and others.
And so let’s have Toma say what he really wants to say from the bottom of his heart here!
Filming for the movie “Ningen Shikkaku” is over now. The filming studio was in Kyoto, so in total I spent about two months living in Kyoto. I only came back to Tokyo once during that time, so I really literally did become a Kyoto-jin [t/n. -jin = person]. I know quite a lot about restaurants there and stuff too. Right, I mentioned this on my j-web too, but went to eat out with SMAP’s Goro-kun too. And it was “just the two of us.” A heart-pounding situation (laughs). At first I was going to get Goro-kun to pick where to go. But he asked me “Do you know of anywhere good?” So I suggested “Then there’s this place I always go to, will that be okay? It’s not stylish or anything, but…” So on the day, I went a bit early and was waiting for Goro-kun in front of the restaurant. And then the first thing Goro-kun said to me was, “You’ve gotten way used to Kyoto!” (laughs). Eh, whether we had wine? Unfortunately, we had makkori that day (laughs) [t/n, korean rice wine]. But he said “When you come back to Tokyo, let’s go have some good wine.” I hope it’ll actually happen soon.
The filming in Kyoto really was fun. There was a really active atmosphere at the site, and everyone was like “The Pro” at things. At first I thought the director was a really scary person. When we had our first meeting, he said nothing and stared at my face. I mentally prepared myself, “Ooh~, he’s going to be so tough on me.” But at the end, he said “The thing that makes me the most glad about having filmed this piece, is that I now have a 24 year old friend whom I respect.” That was so touching~. You know how I said “I’m the type who really gets into character, so I might start sounding depressing” in Wink up before I started filming? That didn’t happen at all this time. We only took one shot at most of the scenes. It’s like, you focus real hard for the real thing… It wasn’t the kind of filming where you take time getting into character towards the real thing. When the director says “cut,” things totally relax. Both your concentration and the entire atmosphere. Mm. It was a really nice environment.
I wasn’t allowed to get tanned while filming, so I didn’t do anything summer-ish~. I was wearing a coat and a kimono in the middle of the summer, so I did feel the heat (laughs). My brother apparently went to one of the summer music festivals that I wanted to go to too, he was totally tanned. How nice~~~. But the other day I went to Guam for work. That’s when I finally got to feel the summer. It was for work, so I couldn’t totally go swimming and stuff, but I got to see a pretty ocean so I’m satisfied.
Speaking of work, I was happy I got to be in “Yonimo~.” It’s a show I’ve watched since I was little, and I’d always wanted to be in it ever since I started in this line of work, so. And story-wise, it’s like “THE Yonimo~.” This was my first time doing a horror type of story, so I’m personally looking forward to what it’ll be like in its completed form.
