beza buangkok stesen ngan hougang
It's a ghost town, even at rush hour
February 24, 2006
ABOUT 10,000 people partied at its opening ceremony.
Hougang MRT.
More than 6,000 pledged to use it and 3,500 trips were expected daily.
Yet, a month after the opening of Buangkok MRT Station on 15 Jan, the average ridership is only 1,355 trips per day.
Buangkok's traffic is a far cry from that of the bustling stations which flank it on the North-East Line (NEL).
Sengkang sees an average of 21,950 trips a day, and Hougang, 14,500.
Even the station on the NEL that has the next lowest ridership, Clarke Quay, sees almost five times as many passenger trips as Buangkok does, at an average of 6,300 a day.
SBS had estimated that Buangkok would see up to 3,500 trips each day.
Instead, when The New Paper was there on 6 Feb, a Monday, the station and its surrounding areas were nearly deserted for most of the day.
Buangkok MRT.
Between 6.30am and 9.30am, which would be the morning rush hour for most MRT stations, there were never more than 21 people there at any one time.
SBS spokesman Tammy Tan said the Buangkok station 'is not experiencing the ridership we had hoped it would'.
It cost $80 million to build and costs $1.2m a year to run.
But Buangkok will make only about $400,000 a year, assuming ridership remains constant, according to Ms Tan.
Which means SBS will face continuing losses as long as Buangkok is running with such ridership figures.
SBS says an average of 5,000 trips a day are needed for Buangkok to break even.
While it remained closed, the two-year saga surrounding Buangkok station, with its white elephant cut-outs and passionate campaigners, was the stuff of front page articles and a flurry of Forum page letters.
From mid-June to end-July 2003, a National University of Singapore survey reported that people in 6,000 households in the area claimed they were willing to walk up to 800m to take the MRT from Buangkok.
About 300 volunteers did door-to-door surveys, petitions, and polls.
Grassroots leaders wrote appeals and held meetings with the Land Transport Authority and SBS Transit.
And Mr Charles Chong, MP for Punggol South, raised the issue in Parliament. |

BUANGKOK U-TURN
One excuse:
Aiyoh, so creepy at night
They fought for MRT station to open, yet they don't use it.

More than 6,000 had said they would, while Buangkok station remained closed.
But since it opened last month, the average daily ridership has been less than a quarter of that. (See other report.)
'It was just a small group of people making a lot of noise,' said a 40-year-old executive living in Punggol, who gave her name only as Ms Yeo.
Some of the over 21,000 residents living within 800m of Buangkok station told The New Paper they have been there only once or twice.
They prefer to take the MRT from Sengkang or Hougang, even though these stations are further away.
Madam Hafsa, 49, a housewife living midway between Buangkok and Sengkang stations, uses the latter.
'I tried going to Buangkok once, but I didn't like it,' she said.
'It was too quiet, and it's creepy when you're there late at night.'
Mr Zaini Mohammed, 36, agreed. Though he lives within walking distance of Buangkok station, he usually takes the train from Sengkang instead.
'If I had children, I would tell them not to use Buangkok. I don't feel secure there,' he said.
When The New Paper checked out the area around Buangkok station at 9pm recently, it was nearly deserted.
The dimly-lit area has a construction site on one side and a large, dark plot of vacant state land the size of 30 football fields on the other.
We spent close to an hour there, and saw fewer than 10 people - only three were commuters.
The other four were foreign workers heading to the construction site.
The three commuters were not too concerned about safety.
Said a 43-year-old administrative assistant, who gave her name only as Madam Zheng: 'I often work late, sometimes till 11pm. But I'm not afraid as my home is near by.'
She did feel the area might be dangerous for young girls.
'There may be assailants hiding in the dark area behind the station, waiting to pounce,' she said in Mandarin.
Some Buangkok residents have got so used to taking the train from other stations that they continue using them out of habit.
Said Ms Rose Ahmad, 31: 'Buangkok is nearer to my home, but I still go to Sengkang because I'm more used to it.'
There is also the shopping.
'I prefer to take a bus to Sengkang because I can shop at Compass Point,' she said.
The shopping complex has at least a dozen eateries, a library, banks, two major department stores (Metro and Robinsons), and various other retail outlets.
In contrast, said Ms Ahmad, 'Buangkok has practically nothing. The station does not have even a small convenience store or snack stand.'
Madam Lim Guek Keow, 50, a housewife, prefers Hougang over Buangkok for the same reason.
Though she lives closer to Buangkok station, she has never been there.
'Hougang is much more convenient. It has a market and is next to Hougang Mall, so I can go shopping on the weekends,' she said.
There are also more bus services to Hougang and an LRT link to Sengkang, whereas most local residents would have to walk a bit to get to Buangkok.
BUS STOP IS NEARER
For Madam Lim, Buangkok station is a 10-minute walk away. But the bus stop is right next to her block.
'Buangkok just seems so far away -- especially on hot or rainy days,' she said. 'But I can take bus 27 to Hougang and get there in less than five minutes.'
And there are sheltered walkways around Sengkang station, unlike Buangkok.
In spite of all that, those who do use Buangkok station are very pleased that it was opened after the lobbying.
Mr Ng Lai Hock, 49, who was at Buangkok station in the late morning, can now shave up to half an hour off his travelling time. 'I used to have to take a feeder bus to Sengkang,' the odd-job labourer said.
'Now, I can save both time and money by walking to Buangkok.'
It is because of people like Mr Ng that MP Charles Chong will not support any move to close Buangkok station again, though it 'might not make economic sense' to keep it open.
'Transport operators should be more concerned with providing the public with this essential service, rather than concentrating on their bottom line.'
SBS Transit said it plans to keep Buangkok station running.
'The decision (to open Buangkok) was not made lightly,' said its spokesman. 'We are committed to keeping the station open.'
Does that mean SBS Transit will keep Buangkok station open, no matter what?
'Yes,' was the firm response. 'Buangkok will not be closed just because ridership is low.'
In any case, new developments, such as the Corbis condominium and several HDB projects, are slated to be completed in the area soon. This would make Buangkok 'quite a densely populated area in one or two years' time,' according to Mr Chong.
For now, though, he is unfazed by the low ridership.
'In fact, I'm delighted at the number of people it is able to serve. How often do you get to please nearly 1,400 residents every day?' |
