Last-ditch effort to save career of Kien Keat-Boon Heong
KUALA LUMPUR: A last-ditch effort will be made today to save the career of doubles pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong ahead of the London Olympic Games.
A series of meetings will take place to address their spiralling drop in form.
Today, the newly-appointed High Performance Team (HPT) of Ng Chin Chai, Wong Ah Jit and Datuk James Selvaraj will meet at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara to discuss solutions and ways to revive the duo’s confidence and game to make them viable contenders for the Olympics.
The team will then meet the coaches – Pang Cheh Chang, Tan Kim Her and Yoo Yong-sung – and the two players to identify the root of the problem and identify ways to strengthen the coaching and training programme.
Last week, Kien Keat-Boon Heong went down to South Koreans Kim Ki-jung-Kim Sa-rang in the second round of the Malaysia Open and the defeat did not go down too well with the home fans.
The former All-England and Asian Games champions are currently ranked seventh in the world and are likely to be the only Malaysian men’s doubles pair to make the top 16 cut for the Olympic Games before the qualifying period ends in late April.
The HPT are likely to decide whether Cheh Chang will continue to be the main coach for Kien Keat-Boon Heong until the Olympic Games or whether he should have more people helping him.
They should maintain the staus quo as Kien Keat-Boon Heong had, after all, asked to replace Rexy Mainaky with Cheh Chang following the quarter-final defeat at the World Championships last year.
Technically, Cheh Chang has been their coach for only five months and it is unfair to link their inconsistent performances to his way of coaching.
Much depends on the players themselves. They have to be, as South Korean doubles great Park Joo-bong said, more committed to their cause. That means training harder and toiling until they get things right again.
Their programme is expected to be tweaked so that they will play in several tournaments so as to maintain their top eight position in the world ranking as that will mean being seeded at the Olympic Games.
