Box office analysis
Exclusive by Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 18, 2007]
First weekend performance of latest release
One can't remember when was the last time a film was so heavily debated from the subject and the box office perspective. KANK comes closer but probably the magnitude was still not as high as the latest release 'Guru'.
The film was supposed to arrive in December along with 'Bhagam Bhag' but did well in avoiding the clash. A delay by 3 weeks only helped the cause as the publicity intensified over the period of time. By the time 12th January came close, it was clear that the film will take an opening but won't be thunderous at the box office in the first 3 days of the release. In fact this was the kind of film which relied more on word of mouth even though the film's treatment was expected to be classy.
In this sense, the film took an above average to good opening though. In fact the film that comes close in terms of sheer box office performance is 'Jaaneman' which took a similar opening and managed to stay afloat for around a week before 'Don' completely took over the proceedings.
Will the same happen for 'Guru'? Seems highly unlikely! Reason being that in case of 'Guru', the word of mouth has been extremely positively with people aiming to go for a repeat watch. Also, those who haven't seen it yet are booking their plans for the coming week which means that the drop in week 2 won't be too significant and would be below an industry standard of 50%.

Nevertheless, things would be clearer once the first week's collections are out since that would give a clear picture about the film's box office status. The way things are, it is only destined to go up!
The other release of the week, 'Anwar', got completely lost in the flood that came in the form of 'Guru' and even though latter may have not captured box office in entirety, it did manage to capture the imagination and debates of one and all which meant that the film got completely sidelined. Though the film has got poor to average reviews, Siddharth Koirala has been appreciated for his restrained act. This may just be a silver lining for the young actor in 'Anwar'.
Last week's movies
A combined first week total of 25 lakhs for 'Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana' and 'Game' says it all about their performance. Twin disasters at the box office, both the films are a complete loss for everyone involved.
From the past
The very first show of 'I See You' gave a clear indication of where the film was heading. As the week progressed, the writing was clear on the wall while the opening week's collections confirmed the worst for Arjun Rampal. With the second week turning out to be a mere formality at the box office, extremely poor collections in the tune of 15 lakhs meant that the film has been an all around reject. Standing at just above 90 lakhs with no chances of touching even a 1 crore mark, the film now qualifies as one of the Top-10 trade disasters of the year gone by.
'Bhagam Bhag' continued to be the top choice of moviegoers even in its 3rd week as it took a little more than standard 50% fall (~60%). Still, 5 crores more added to its total is not a bad sign at all for this film that has now collected in the access of 38 crores and is still counting. The film may just about manage to stretch itself to 45 crores in the long run.

Mumbai continues to be the strongest area for 'Bhagam Bhag' since 3rd week again brought with it 1 crore. Delhi was good too with near 50 lakhs while collections continued to trickle in from smaller centres too. A comfortable hit already, 'Bhagam Bhag' has only helped the track record of 2006 to bloom!
Even with 'Bhagam Bhag' and 'Dhoom 2' around, 'Kabul Express' managed to stay afloat, though maximum booty came in from Mumbai [30 lakhs]. With a decent 40% fall and around 80 lakhs coming in its 4th week, 'Kabul Express' now stands at 12 crores which makes it a good average earner.
'Baabul' is now breathing its last and making a silent exit from the country. With mere 25 lakhs added to the total, the film is a flop at 17.25 crores. Expect the film's DVDs/VCDs to arrive on stands in a fortnight's time.
'Dhoom 2' continues to do good business as it is still finding a loyal audience for itself. In its 7th week, the film did a business of close to 2 crores and brought the overall collections to 83.5 crores. All set to cross the 85 crore mark in the near future, any film that would challenge the box office performance of 'Dhoom 2' would now have to design itself as a 100 crores earner. Now that's the new box office parameter for one and all.
It's an extended honeymoon for Shahid Kapoor and Amrita Rao as their 'Vivah' has now become a case study for release strategy and market placement. Running at almost same number of cinemas as the top running film of last week, 'Bhagam Bhag', the film again took a marginal fall and added 1.5 crores to its total. With more than 26 crores in its kitty, it now seems feasible that the film would eventually manage to touch the 30 crore mark.
In the future
This Friday sees the release of two distinct films - 'Risk' and 'Mr. Hot Mr. Kool'. While the former has seen a decent round of promotion, especially in last 3 weeks, latter comes literally unannounced. 'Risk', which is seeing a selective release, may just about work with the lovers of 'masala' films, especially at single screens. Vinod Khanna is the USP of the film and if the film indeed has thrilling moments as promised, it may manage to do an average business at the box office. On the other hand, 'Mr. Hot Mr. Kool' may not even get a proper release, let alone being a candidate for making any box office ripples. |

What is Om Puri doing in Khallas?
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 19, 2007]
There are some movies where it becomes difficult to comprehend the presence of some actors. A low budget unknown film titled KHALLAS is one of them!
The film comes across as a routine action drama revolving around crime, cops and underworld with elements of violence, sleaze and cheap thrills incorporated in it. Nothing wrong with that since there are audience for such genre of films and business continues to thrive for them.
But what comes as an absolute shocker is the presence of Om Puri in the film who is being highlighted all over. Though the promo lasts for just a few seconds, it doesn't quite require am Einstein to predict that Puri probably has just a guest appearance but is used for creating awareness about the film.
Coming with a tagline of 'Beginning of an end', KHALLAS is one of those movies that Om Puri would certainly not be proud of flouting in his resume. |

Why is the USP of NPD being ignored?
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 19, 2007]
Remember ANTHONY KAUN HAI? Even while Arshad Warsi was the lead hero in the film, it was Sanjay Dutt who was plastered all over the town. Reason was very simple - The world knows that Sanju baba is a BIG star with the kind of unmatchable clout.
This is the reason why one is puzzled in a big way when the promotion of NEHLLE PE DEHLLA hardly features him even as he and Saif Ali Khan play parallel leads. While Saif is being presented in 3 song and dance routines one after another, Sanjay Dutt is hardly there at all.
In fact insult to the injury comes in the form of a stray shot or two of his which arrives for a few seconds and then disappears.
For a film which has none other than Sanju as a USP due to his next comic act after LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, one waits to see if there would be a change in the promotional campaign in days to come. |

It is going to be one colorful battle this 2007
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 19, 2007]
2006 was the year that gave us RANG DE BASANTI. And it is going to rain COLORS in 2007, especially in coming months. How? Well let us explain!
Come February 09 and Vikram Bhatt uleashes his romantic thriller RED starring Aftab Shivdasani, Celina Jaitley and Amrita Arora. Looking quite a passionate exciting flick, it is expected to justify the relevance of its title.
On the same day arrives Anurag Kashyap's BLACK FRIDAY which narrates the incidents of the day that proved to be a black spot in Indian history.
In the same month, a relatively unknown film called RED SWASTIK sees a release too. A sex'n'revenge tale, the film is being publicized with quotable quotes from Sherlyn Chopra, a wannabe Mallika Sherawat.
Subhash Ghai and Anil Kapoor unite with an interestingly titled film BLACK N WHITE that tells the story of a lead protagonist who is a terrorist. Looking at a May release, it will be Ghai's next directorial venture after KISNA.
On the other hand Vishal Bhardwaj's long-time-back-finished film THE BLUE UMBRELLA too sees a release. Acquired by UTV, it has Pankaj Kapur as the only known face in the film.

Brits Oust `Brother' Racism-Row Figure

The British public voted to evict a contestant whose comments had triggered international criticism of the reality TV show "Celebrity Big Brother" for broadcasting alleged racist incidents.
Britons over the last week have filed 38,000 complaints with Britain's television regulator alleging that Indian actress Shilpa Shetty had been subjected to racial abuse from fellow contestants Jade Goody and Danielle Lloyd, both minor British celebrities.
The show held its scheduled public vote Friday, with both Shetty and Goody nominated for eviction from the "Big Brother" house in which the contestants are insulated from the outside world. Goody was the one tossed out.
Neither Shetty nor Goody were fully aware of the furor the show had caused.
After announcing Goody's ouster live on Channel 4, show host Davina McCall said: "Jade obviously has no idea that for the last week she has been at the center of an international crisis."
The alleged racist incidents sparked an outcry in both Britain and India, where protesters earlier this week burned an effigy said to depict the show's producers. Newspapers have played the debate on front pages, politicians have expressed concern about the alleged racism.
Under public pressure to deal with the issue, Channel 4 said producers had spoken to Goody and Lloyd. Goody, apparently after hearing that some viewers were offended by her remarks to Shetty, broke into tears and said she was "petrified" by the idea of facing the public "because people think I'm a racist."
"I've never been more scared in my life," Goody said on the show before her eviction.
On Friday night, producers banned the public from outside the "Big Brother" house, where previously fans have greeted whomever is forced to leave the show.
Goody, who became a celebrity after enduring much abuse herself in an earlier edition of "Big Brother," approached Shetty on Thursday night and apologized, but said she was no racist.
Following her eviction, Goody appeared to be stunned when McCall showed her edited footage of the show and the international reaction it had received.
"Oh my God," Goody said.
"I'm not a racist person, but looking at that film I can see why it's had the impact it has had."
On Wednesday, a major sponsor suspended its advertising deal with "Celebrity Big Brother"; a chain of perfume shops pulled the fragrance "Shh..", endorsed by Goody, from its shelves; and an insurance company canceled its contract with Lloyd.
Britain's Treasury chief Gordon Brown, who has been questioned about "Big Brother" every day on his current visit to India, said he would not tell Britons how to vote on the eviction _ but dropped some heavy hints.
"It's for people to decide for themselves how to vote, but I think a vote for Britain is a vote for tolerance," Brown told Sky News.
Broadcasting regulator OFCOM said the number of complaints it received over "Celebrity Big Brother" _ about 38,000 _ was a record for a British television program.

Big Brother: Jade evicted, Shilpa plays on
January 20, 2007 11:54 IST
Jade Goody, the big-mouthed tormentor of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty was evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house on Friday night as millions of viewers turned the phone vote into an impromptu referendum on racism.
Sources suggested that more than five million viewers voted after Chancellor Gordon Brown, on a visit to India, broadly suggested that a call to oust 25-year-old Jade would be a vote "for tolerance."
The response was overwhelming; with 82 per cent of voters choosing to throw Goody out after her attacks on the 31-year-old Bollywood star.
There was a late flurry of sympathy for Goody after she wept on last night's show and made an impassioned plea that she was not racist.
On hearing of her eviction she sighed, hugged Shetty and said, "I'll be alright. I know why it is - it's because of what I said the other day."
Earlier Brown, stepping into the race row for the third day running during a visit to a Bollywood film studio in Mumbai told the SKY TV that he regarded backing the Indian actress as a positive way of showing Britain was "a nation of tolerance and fairness."
"There is a lot of support for Shilpa. It is pretty clear we are getting the message across," he said.
The eviction marked the end of an extraordinary week, which saw the apparent racism against Shetty on the reality show spark into an international diplomatic storm.
Before she was voted out, a tearful Goody who found fame after her appearance in Big Brother 3 in 2002, begged programme chiefs to let her avoid the eviction night crowd.
Goody said she was "petrified" by the idea of facing the public "because people think I'm a racist. I've never been more scared in my life. I swear to that."
Channel 4 granted her wish by barring the crowd that normally gathers outside the house for evictions.
Racial jibes at Shilpa Shetty by Goody and fellow contestants Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara had caused a storm of controversy, with over 40,000 people making complaints.
Shetty was referred to as a "dog" and "the Indian" and told she should "f*** off home."
Earlier it emerged that panicking Big Brother chiefs engineered a phoney rapprochement between Shilpa Shetty and Goody as a key sponsor pulled out and pressure grew to axe the show.
According to sources, a 90-minute talk with Shetty, executives manipulated her into saying she did not feel the victim of racism. They then compelled Goody to apologise to her.
The channel also caved in to accusations of profiteering over the row by saying all earnings from the bumper vote would go to charities.
The broadcaster and producers Endemol will still benefit from the controversy. Ratings almost doubled after the row.
Hertfordshire police, investigating complaints of racism, said last night they intended to interview all the celebrities once they have left the house. |

Karamchand is back
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Sunday, January 21, 2007]
After almost a decade, 'Karamchand' that made Pankaj Kapur a household name, would be returning on the telly.
The show is being revived in a more stylish and cool 'avtar' on Sony and would feature Pankaj Kapur in the central role once again. To be directed by its original creator Pankaj Parashar, 'Karamchand' is a detective serial with strong humor as a strong undercurrent force.
When aired between 1985-1988, 'Karamchand' had achieved a cult status with Sushmita Mukherjee's 'Kitty' act never failing to raise a chuckle.
Looking forward to yet another brilliant act by Kapur who turned up two brilliant performances in 2005 with 'Sehar' and 'Dus' but had a low 2006 with no releases. His 'Blue Umbrella' would the next film release which is expected to arrive in May. |
