Women shuttlers’ success exposes inconsistency of men’s team
THE women shuttlers pulled off a rare feat to star for Malaysia in the Laos SEA Games.
Astonishingly, they ended a 32-year wait for a team title and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty bagged the doubles crown to ensure that the two-gold target was met.
Previously, the men took the spotlight. And the women’s success has exposed a raw nerve in the set-up of the national men’s team.
It showed up yet again the inconsistencies among the men’s doubles pairs and also highlighted the lack of talent in singles play.
These revelations do not augur well as Malaysia look at making a mark in three important events next year – the Thomas Cup Finals, World Championships and Asian Games.
The country’s top two pairs – Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif – will have to put more work into their game to be consistent after falling short in the individual and team events respectively.
National doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky said that his focus next year would be to add quality to the men’s doubles department.
“Of the two top pairs, I think that Fairuzizuan-Zakry have to give more of themselves in the game. Somehow, something is stopping them from giving their best when they are on court,” he said.
Rexy added that he would give more emphasis in training in order to get the men’s doubles to strike at the Thomas Cup Finals and World Championships.
“These two events are important and I will be looking for a third men’s pair for the Thomas Cup Finals. We have a big pool of back-up shuttlers but I want a pair who are reliable,” he said.
He added that no doubles pair would feature in the season-opening Super Series Korean Open next month.
“They will get ready for the Malaysian Open (Jan 19-24). I want more time to work with them in training,” said Rexy.
National singles coach Rashid Sidek, however, has a bigger headache.
In the absence of world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, back-up shuttler Liew Daren was given a chance to prove himself at Laos. But he failed miserably, losing in the first round to an unheralded Vietnamese.
“Daren blew the chance to be considered for the Thomas Cup Finals. This was a chance of a lifetime but he froze,” said Rashid.
“But Daren is not the only one with this problem in the back-up squad. I am hoping for the back-up players to show more commitment next year.”
For now, Mohd Hafiz Hashim will be counted on to support Chong Wei in winning honours for Malaysia next year.
Meanwhile, despite the breakthrough in the Laos SEA Games, it will be a tall order to expect the Malaysian women to stamp their mark in the Uber Cup Finals.
Back-up doubles shuttlers Woon Khe Wei and Ng Hui Lin did well to earn the winning point in Malaysia’s 3-1 victory over Indonesia in the team final but they need exposure in higher level tournaments.
Malaysia also need to add more depth to the women’s singles department in order to challenge powerhouses China, Denmark and South Korea.
Currently, none can come close to Wong Mew Choo.
