The Latvian fought back from a set down to take the Russian out 5-7 6-4 6-2 in a fiercely competitive last-16 tie. But while it was hard-fought on the court, Sevastova admitted there is no animosity towards her opponent off it, unlike many of the outspoken stars who have taken on the 30-year-old in 2017.
When asked whether she had an extra incentive to beat Sharapova in light of her 15-month suspension, Sevastova replied: ‘I think some players have that. I don’t have that. ‘I have great respect for her. I mean, I was 14 years old, I was playing under-14, at a tournament, and she was winning Wimbledon the same day basically. ‘Yeah, I was confident. I was feeling it. But you still have to beat her. I think she was playing one of the better matches here, one of the better matches here, yeah.’
Sevastova will take on Sloane Stephens in the quarter-finals after reaching the last-eight in New York for the second year in a row.
