Aaron Kelly is pictured with Bill and Pat Lower, a couple that his adopted aunt, Laura Lower, described as being like his grandparents.
Sonestown, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Sullivan County that boasts a population of just over 900. But Sonestown is also home to 16-year old Aaron Kelly - a hopeful on Hollywood’s American Idol.
Kelly’s story of a difficult childhood, combined with his strong vocal abilities, has helped earn Kelly a spot in the Top 24 performers of this season’s preview of American Idol.
But the story behind Kelly is one that won over the hearts of the judges, as well as many of the viewers that are tuning in to see who will earn this year’s title as an American Idol.
Kelly was born the youngest of three brothers to a family that was struggling in Florida. It was because of these struggles that Kelly’s aunt and uncle from Sonestown, Pa. decided to adopt Kelly - and he soon called Sonestown his home.
In an interview with Kelly’s adopted aunt, Laura Lower, Kelly became part of their family at the age of six, and has been with their family ever since. Lower described Kelly as being shy, with a love for animals and photography.
But although he was described as shy, Lower noted that Kelly never showed it on stage. “He’s never shy when he’s on stage,” said Lower. “He’s very polite.”
And Lower talked of the connection she had with Aaron and his adopted parents (who are his biological aunt and uncle), and how her father also became close with Kelly and has supported him on his journey.
At a family function, then only six years old, Kelly started singing and astonished his family and friends with his amazing talent, to include Lower’s father. “When my father first heard Aaron sing he was amazed,” said Lower. “From then on it was all history.”
Ever since then Aaron has been causing a stir. Aaron has performed in front of huge audiences such as county, state and national events, school functions, private parties, weddings, talent competitions, numerous social and charity events, National and Local TV and Radio. Aaron has opened for Major recording Artists. He has already acquired a large fan base and has begun stealing the hearts of young girls wherever he performs.
Recent local performances by Kelly have taken place at the Bloomsburg Fair for two of the past three years, and a 2008 performance at the Troy Fair. Kelly has opened for or played with Loretta Lynn, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker Band and Martina McBride; and was a finalist on Pax-TV’s “America’s Most Talented Kids” when he was 11.
But Kelly’s most recent performances on American Idol are making this Sonestown teen become a popular name for the viewing audience, as well as a topic for fans on myspace and facebook pages across the north and southeast.
According to an access interview last week through American Idol, Kelly talked of his Idol audition last year in Orlando, and what it all means to him.
Kelly, who is nearing the completing of his high school education through Pennsylvania’s cyber school, always watched American Idol, and recalled wanting to be on that stage.
“When I was watching Idol at a young age,” said Kelly, “I remember thinking that I wanted to be there, sitting in front of all those fans and being someone you admire.”
Kelly talked of his influences for his own music as well. “If I had to have a mentor,” said Kelly, “I would say I’m inspired by Rascal Flats.” “They have very honest music, and that’s what I like about them.”
Kelly also talked of his love for country music, and what it means to him. In a interview with Talk Show Radio’s “The Morning Call”, Kelly said he grew up listening to country music. “My parents have always listened to country music and that’s what I’ve been raised around,” Kelly said in the interview. “Any time I get in the car and the radio would be on, it would be on a country music station. And that’s pretty much just what I grew up listening to and it’s got a lot of meaning in the music.”
But for Kelly, American Idol is now taking him to a new level. Kelly was visiting a friend last year when he heard about the American Idol auditions - so he decided to check it out. After going on-line, and learning that the auditions were in Orlando, Kelly flew down and soon made it through to Hollywood.
And although many of the auditions were pre-recorded and not televised until the season began last month, Kelly knew how far he had progressed in the show, but was unable to talk about it.
In another interview with Kelly, he was asked which direction he would have gone in with his music if he had not decided to give American Idol a try, and he responded that he would have probably gone back to Nashville and just continued songwriting.
But American Idol, for now, promises a hopeful future for this young artist. According to a representative from American Idol at Fox, Kelly’s selection to the Top 24 on American Idol was one of over 100,000 hopefuls who auditioned in seven cities.
And during another interview with Kelly, he discussed how the concept of being televised each week in front of seven million people has not hit him yet, and that he is not really sure how far he will make it on the show.
“I really didn’t think that I would have gotten this far,” said Kelly in the access interview.
But the hype, and the comments building on myspace and facebook back home surrounding Kelly’s performances is growing.
Lower, who resides in Ithaca, has been receiving emails through her facebook page in support of Kelly. Lower has gone as far as to print Team Aaron shirts for sale and distribution to her friends and family.
And Lower has received many posts on her facebook page to include a recent post from Shelly Phelps that said, “Laura - although I have never met Aaron I just have to say WHAT AN AMAZING BOY! His voice is obviously amazing but his character, how he presents himself-hard to believe he is only 16! He brought tears to my eyes (as I'm sure yours) and I love watching someone who is so passionate about what they are doing! I usually do ...not watch AI but thought I would check it out after seeing your posts and will continue to do so! Best of luck to him and I hope all is well with you and family!”
On Kelly’s facebook page, Iche Von Sombra wrote, “From Smithfield, PA - and my 'FernValleyKaraoke' members, we ALL will be watching, and voting Aaron! and watching for your vocals, style, confidence, and determination, we all saw from 'that 12 year old contestant' in the competition at Tioga Downs in 2006!”
The internet posts back home are just a small portion of the hype and excitement building for this Sonestown teen. Other internet websites have compared Kelly to Idol’s 2008 runner-up, David Archileta.
But in a recent interview with Talk Show Radio’s “The Morning Call”, Kelly stated, “We’re actually not supposed to go reading all that stuff. I did see that one article and, you know, me and David Archuleta are completely different people. Different kind of music, different style and, I mean, the only similarities between me and David are that we’re both 16 – we were both 16 when we tried out for the show. And I’m getting a lot of people telling me that I’m a lot like David Archuleta, which is a very great compliment – I mean, he’s a great, phenomenal singer and musician. So I’m honored to be compared to him, but we’re two different people.”
But for now, family, friends and fans are tuning in to see how far Kelly will go on American Idol - and if he can actually become, the next American Idol.
