Season 5 will hit Netflix in the U.S. this October, after its August 25 premiere on BBC One in the U.K.- The season 5 trailer teases Sam Claflin as a new character, MP Oswald Mosley.
Peaky Blinders has everything: A sexy, morally-problematic antihero, an equally sexy and morally-problematic extended family, killer soundtrack choices, stylized violence, and near-impenetrable British accents. Fans of 1920s crime boss and gin purveyor-turned-politician Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his gun-slinging clan have waited a long time for season 5 of the U.K. series. But now we're this close to a U.S. premiere, and a new trailer promises more drama than ever. Here's everything we know about Peaky Blinders season 5. When is Peaky Blinders coming back?If you live in the U.K., the show returns to BBC Oneon August 25. Americans and other fans outside the U.K. will have to wait a bit longer, but Peaky Blinders season 5 hits Netflix internationally on Friday, October 4. That's only, like, 81,652 replays of Nick Cave's Is there a season 5 trailer?Yes. The BBCOne shared a series 5 (as they call it) trailer on July 30. If you've seen the show, it will not surprise you that the Shelby fam is absolutely going through it. Again.
We get a glimpse of some new faces, including Tommy's new political foe, and things get explosive, literally.
What's the song in the Peaky Blinderstrailer? The period drama has always incorporated modern artists like Radiohead, PJ Harvey, and Arctic Monkeys into their soundtrack, and the new season is no exception. The song is "Strange Weather" by Anna Calvi featuring David Byrne. Calvi has written an original score for season 5, NME reports. Sam Claflin and Anya Taylor-Joy join the season 5 cast.Sam Claflin ( The Hunger Games series; Me Before You) portrays Oswald Mosley, a right-wing MP who became the leader of the British Union of Fascists in real life. Taylor-Joy ( Split, The Witch) will play an American named Gina, who Tommy's cousin Michael Gray (Finn Cole) married during his time in the U.S. Heaven-Leigh Clee, who briefly appears in the trailer, plays Ruby Shelby, Tommy's daughter with Lizzie Stark. Returning will be Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly, Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, Sophie Rundle as Ada Thorne, Kate Phillips as Linda Shelby, Natasha O’Keeffe as Lizzie Stark, Jack Rowan as Bonnie Gold, Charlie Murphy as Jessie Eden, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Col Ben Younger, Harry Kirton as Finn Shelby, Packy Lee as Johnny Dogs, Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, Ian Peck as Curly, and Benjamin Zephaniah as Jeremiah Jesus. Game of Thrones' Aidan Gillen will also revive his role as Aberama Gold, the Romany hitman with the wannabe boxer son. Aunt Polly's now romantically involved with Aberama—and with that silver 'stache, who could blame her?
What is season 5 about? The action begins with the Wall Street crash of 1929 and its impact on everyone, including the Shelbys. Series creator Steven Knight tells Deadline that they're "seriously affected because they’ve invested their legitimate money and are going to have to fall back on the illegitimate money."
Tommy, elected as a member of Parliament in the season 4 finale, will encounter Mosley as the show's latest big bad. But, as Knight says, "he’s always faced a nemesis, and in this one he has some powerful enemies, but the biggest one is himself."
"We’re dealing more here with Tommy’s mental state," Murphy tells NME. “It has been looked at previously, but not in as great detail as this [season] does. He’s quite fragile when we meet him. Well, that’s an understatement."
Still, Mosley's fascist designs on England will be a major part of the plot. "We’ve had the 20s, the hedonism, the cocaine and the booze," Knight says. "The Wall Street crash happened, and it was the beginning of the hangover through the 30s. What I’m planting in this to pick up in Seasons 6 and 7, amongst many other things, is that fascism is afoot."
