Netanyahu says operation will continue 'at full strength'
16 May 2021
In a televised address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the military operation against Hamas is "continuing at full strength", appearing to reject international attempts to arrange a ceasefire.
"Our campaign against the terrorist organisations is continuing with full force. We are acting now, for as long as necessary, to restore calm and quiet to you, Israel's citizens. It will take time," he said.
Mr Netanyahu added that Israel wanted to exact a price from the "aggressor" and to restore deterrence. He was speaking after a meeting of Israel's security cabinet which went on for several hours.

No obvious end in sight to Israel's campaign
16 May 2021
Is Israel’s military operation in Gaza, dubbed “Guardian of the Walls”, nearing its conclusion? Not obviously. Benjamin Netanyahu says attacks are continuing with “full force” and will “take time”.
In a news conference this afternoon, Israel’s prime minister admitted there were “pressures” but thanked US President Joe Biden, in particular, for his support.
Mr Biden’s envoy, Hady Amr, has been in Israel since Friday, discussing the crisis with Israeli officials. Unusually, at the end of a week that has also seen an alarming spate of inter-communal violence in mixed Jewish-Arab cities, he also met Israeli-Arab leaders.
Since the US, like Israel and many other countries, regards Hamas as a terrorist organisation, Mr Amr will not be meeting one of the two warring parties. Any messages for Hamas will have to go through traditional interlocutors, like Egypt or Qatar.
Local reports suggest Hamas has been offering some kind of ceasefire for several days, only to be rebuffed by Israel, which clearly wants to inflict as much damage as it can on the militants before the fighting is finally brought to a close.
These episodes follow a familiar pattern: Israel presses home its undoubted military advantage until the international outcry over civilian casualties, and a deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, demand that the operation end.
In Israel’s estimation, we have not yet reached that point.

Dozens of Israeli air raids pummel Gaza Strip | 17 May 2021
At least 212 people, including 61 children, have been killed in Gaza since the latest violence began a week ago. Some 1,500 Palestinians were also wounded.
The Israeli military launched another series of air raids on the Gaza Strip early on Monday, hours after its caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks on the Palestinian enclave would rage on.
Explosions rocked Gaza City from north to south in a bombardment that was heavier, wider and lasted longer than the air raids that killed at least 42 Palestinians and wounded dozens more on Sunday.
Earlier, Hamas, the group that governs the Gaza Strip, fired rockets towards the Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Beersheba. Israel has reported 10 dead, including two children.

Huge loss: Experienced Gaza doctors killed in Israeli attacks
17 May 2021
Medical workers and health organisations have decried the killing of two senior doctors – a neurologist and the head of internal medicine at Gaza’s largest hospital – in Israeli attacks on the besieged Palestinian enclave.
The deaths further exacerbate a medical staff and expertise shortage in the Gaza Strip, the result of a 14-year-long blockade that prevents freedom of movement, causes dire supply and equipment shortages and hinders medical advancement.
Dr Ayman Abu al-Ouf, head of internal medicine at Al-Shifa hospital, was killed along with members of his family in an early morning missile attack in the al-Wehda district of Gaza on Sunday.
The bombing killed at least 33 civilians and left rescuers sifting through the rubble of apartment buildings to find survivors.
“It is a shock for me and for the entire medical community,” Dr Osaid Alser, a former student of al-Ouf’s who also interned with him at Al-Shifa, told Al Jazeera. “He is one of the most senior internal medicine doctors in Gaza… That means a huge loss to the medical community.”
Dr Mooein Ahmad al-Aloul, a 66-year-old psychiatric neurologist, was also killed in his home during the al-Wehda attacks early Sunday, his brother Mazen al-Aloul told Al Jazeera.
He added that his brother, who studied in Egypt and France and worked in Saudi Arabia before returning to Gaza, had been working at a specialised clinic before his death.
Dr al-Aloul’s 25-year-old daughter, Aya, spoke to Al Jazeera over the phone from the hospital, saying she and her mother were recovering from shrapnel wounds there.
“Without warning,” she said, “they bombed our house.”

[At the beginning of Ramadan, Palestinians protested, successfully, for the removal of Israeli police restrictions on Damascus Gate, which Israeli police sealed off to prevent Israeli and Palestinian crowds from potentially meeting, which could result in violence.
Far-right Israelis had been harassing Palestinians during marches while chanting “death to Arabs”.
“It started in Bab al-Amoud [Damascus Gate] and then came here and then it went to Al Aqsa,” said Nabil.
Restrictions and harassment culminated on Monday as Israeli security forces violently stormed the Al Aqsa Mosque compound, with snipers gunning down Palestinians with rubber-coated steel rounds and troops chasing and beating others.
Some worshippers were attacked during morning prayers. Hundreds of Palestinians were wounded.]

More than 58,000 Palestinians displaced in Gaza: UN
18 May 2021
More than 58,000 Palestinians have been displaced by Israeli air strikes that have destroyed or badly damaged nearly 450 buildings in the Gaza Strip, according to the UN aid agency.
About 47,000 of the displaced people have sought shelter in 58 UN-run schools in Gaza, Jens Laerke, spokesman of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told reporters.
Laerke also said 132 buildings had been destroyed and 316 had been severely damaged, including six hospitals and nine primary healthcare centres.
