Okay some short recaps from our meeting so I don't forget:

- TONS of people lined up for Adam already when we walked into M&G. There was a constant crowd of people around him during the entire after party - nowhere NEAR as many around any other Idol.

- Adorable 90-something year old lady before me in line who was hugging and grabbing all over him (not inappropriately, just very affectionate), and he was SO sweet and gracious to her. Then a few minutes later a 9-ish year old girl who came up to him and proudly (and LOUDLY) proclaimed that it was the most exciting moment OF HER LIFE. stuart.gif He laughed and said thank you and she clung to him and hugged him multiple times...so cute. wub.gif Charming women from 9 to 90...

- Took pictures for a lot of people in front of me and let some little kids go first, and was patient when a few butted in ahead of me that were behind me...so when it finally came time for my turn, he said "Thanks for waiting" and gave me a huuuge hug. wub.gif (Duh, of course I'm going to wait... tongue.gif )

- Told him I was a fan since before was shown on Idol and knew instantly that he'd be the one for me when they aired his audition. He seemed shocked and happy to hear that and thanked me. happy.gif

- Told him I run a gallery for him and spelled out the URL - he said he'd not been there yet, but would try to remember it so he could go back. Said it has almost 2.3 million views which floored him, and he thanked me profusely for putting so many days worth of work into it. (Did I mention he was gracious as ever? heart.gif )

- Brought phone bills with (unlimited) outgoing texts of about 15,000 per statement, and he was just in AWE, lol. After each one I showed him, he was like "Oh my gosh!" and signed each page (didn't intend on him doing that, it was like he was certifying them or something... roll2.gif ) and then gave me another hug and thanked me "so much" for everything I'd done for him. wub.gif

- LOVED the Kradam sign and said it was really well done. Talked about Kradam and how when it got to the final two, I loved both so much that I was okay with whatever happened; and he very strongly agreed with that.

I think that's most of what we talked about...but uh, other minor details: it felt like he was standing three inches away from me when we were talking; he stares so intensely into your eyes with his BEAUTIFUL baby blues that you forget that there are other people around omg.gif and his smile is that much more beautiful when it's a reaction to something you've said. Oh what a wonderful feeling. happy.gif Just being in his presence is a wonderful feeling, let alone having a conversation, multiple hugs, and a kiss. He is absolutely incredible. wub.gif

More stuff later...I can barely keep my eyes open so I'm going to sleep! yawnwave.gif original.gif original.gif original.gif

Chatting with Adam Lambert: From Google to going all the way on American Idol By Shelley Fralic 07-06-2009 C’mon, admit it. You’ve Googled yourself, more than once, if only to see what others might be saying about you, or maybe because you’re curious about the context in which your name comes up, if it does at all. And you can bet if we mere mortals are quietly engaging in a little self-indulgent personal Internet bio surfing, then you can be sure that celebrities far and wide are logging on and checking their worldwide web profile with more than a little regularity. Like flamboyant vocal powerhouse 27-year-old Adam Lambert, the American Idol runner-up, who came in second last May to boy-next-door Kris Allen and who told me in a recent interview that he Googled himself so much, once the show began making him famous, that he even had a Google alert so he wouldn’t miss anything. “When the Idol thing first started, I was excited and wanted to know what people were saying. but it started getting kind of ridiculous,” Lambert laughs, on the phone from his hotel room in Portland, Ore. a few days before the July 5 kickoff of the 50-city American Idols Live! tour. And by ridiculous he means it was hard keeping up (if you do a search on his name, you’ll discover 12 million results and, frankly, that makes for a lot of reading). So he had to give it up, for other things, like the new iPhone he’s using for this interview. “I had a Google alert thing. Then, a month ago, I said, ‘This is getting a little narcissistic, Adam’ and I disabled it. There’s a certain amount of relinguishing you have to do.” Lambert, who’s been both rehearsing for the Top 10 tour and writing and recording for his new CD out this fall, says no one was more surprised than he to find himself in the spotlight that has come with singing his socks off, in all his glam-rock eye-linered glory, in front of an average of 30 million viewers who tuned in each work to the final shows of season eight of reality’s TV’s top-rated show. He recalls auditioning in San Francisco in August 2008 and, presto, now he’s getting advice from Madonna and Katy Perry, has a newly signed record contract, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone (where he officially outed himself) and is touring like a rock star. Surprised? Really? “Yes, surprised that I made it to the very end. I knew I wasn’t the typical Idol type of talent. But this year that changed.” And when you ask Lambert, who has a musical theatre background, where he expects to find himself in a decade or so, you sense in him the hope that his star search will have a sustained arc, that all the power of the Idol machine, coupled with his own not-inconsiderable talent, will stand him in good stead as a working performer for some time to come. “In 10 years? I hope I’ll have a good large handful of albums out, and be making appearances, and maybe doing films.” The American Idols Live! 50-city tour hits GM Place in Vancouver on Wednesday, July 8.

American Idols Live!

Wednesday, 7 p.m.

GM Place

Tickets $48.50 — $78.50

from ticketmaster.ca

VANCOUVER - If there was any question that Adam Lambert stands out as one of the most interesting performers ever to strut through America’s flighty pop culture conscience, then you need only chat with him a few minutes for confirmation.

Firstly, he just got a new iPhone and he’s using from his hotel room in Portland and he isn’t quite sure how it works, so, um, sorry if he accidentally cuts you off.

And, secondly, don’t think for one second that the hedgehog-haired glam rock sensation who almost won American Idol — coming second in last May’s finale behind the talented mild-mannered Kris Allen — isn’t guiding his own light.

Lambert, who hits the stage at GM Place Wednesday for American Idols Live!, featuring the show’s Top 10 finishers, took season eight by storm with his powerhouse vocals and his flamboyant stage presence, finely tuned from years in musical theatre.

That experience, he says, grounded him and while he admits the music industry is different, he quickly puts to rest any suggestion that Idol has wrested control of his artistic ambition.

That’s always been the knock against the hit reality show, of course, that undiscovered talents like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and Daughtry are manufactured commodities, plucked from obscurity and signed to contracts and steered to stardom with the backing of the big Idol machine and franchise creator Simon Fuller’s influential company, 19 Recordings, much like Disney does with its child stars.

And even if that were true, and even if that were a bad thing, Lambert’s Idol experience has been anything but.

During the show, he says, it was all consultation, all the time, from the outfits he wore to the songs he picked to sing.

“I like to control what I create and what I perform. And with Idol, they let me do that. There’s this perception out there that they control you, and that’s not the case.”

“They consult about everything . . . it’s all been kind of up to me.”

And if the post-Idol chaos, from his non-stop rehearsing schedule to the endless media interviews, is handled by experts, that’s fine by him.

“The day-to-day stuff isn’t up to me, but to be honest, it takes a lot of pressure off my shoulders.

“I’d be a mess if I had to look after that at the moment.”

American Idols Live! features the season’s Top 10 — performing along with Allen and Lambert are Allison Iraheta, Anoop Desai, Danny Gokey, Lil Rounds, Matt Giraud, Megan Joy, Michael Sarver, Scott MacIntyre.

Lambert says the group, which is travelling to venues on two separate buses, has been in rehearsal for the past month and, with the first show in Portland last Sunday night, was itching “to put it up on its feet in a big arena.”

Lambert’s set includes a David Bowie medley — Life on Mars, Fame and Let’s Dance — which he’ll deliver with an electronic spin while decked out in a blue metallic silver bomber jacket with tails and spikes.

For Lambert fans, the show will surely recall his still-memorable over-the-top Idol performances, which ranged from a haunting Mad World to a rocking version of Aerosmith’s Cryin’ to a showstopper Ring of Fire.

Though he was considered the favourite from the start of the season, his campness and the rumours about his homosexuality, which he didn’t publicly confirm until after the show, were said to have scuttled a win, with conservative American Idol voters opting for the more homespun Allen.

Lambert, who looks like the love child of Joan Jett and Elvis Presley, knows there is no question he’s an Idol oddball and a media magnet, whether it’s being touted as Queen’s new frontman or taking flak from Gene Simmons of KISS, who said the 27-year-old killed his career by officially outing himself in a June cover story in Rolling Stone.

And while Lambert says he’s had to sacrifice his personal life (he’s dating interior designer Drake LaBry), “I try my hardest to remain cool with it, to have a sense of humour about it.

“None of it has really shocked me. I think it’s a fair trade. It’s worth it, for the opportunities.”

Lambert has also been busy in the studio, writing and recording songs for a CD that will be released in November, as well as meeting some of the pros in the business, like Usher and Enrique Iglesias.

And Madonna, who he says told him to keep his eyes on the prize.

But the best advice so far, he says, came from songbird Katy Perry who told him, simply, “you gotta stay happy.”

So, Adam, is life post-Idol more roller coaster or runaway train?

“It does feel like kind of a roller coaster,” he laughs.
