Rupa2nya di Hotlanta, General dah memang femes ...
Interview with ‘Pants on the Ground’ man Larry PlattJanuary 14, 2010, by Rodney Ho
“Pants on the Ground” songmeister Larry Platt was “Idol’s” gimmick du jour last night. The producers gave Platt a platform to perform his song even though he was more than three decades too old to qualify for the show. But they knew he was comedy gold.
On a more serious note, he was part of the civil rights movement, too. I got him on the phone at about noon today. He was rather difficult to understand at times but I cobbled together the best that I could his reactions to his song and how “Idol” portrayed him.
“It played real real good,” he said. “I liked it. I loved it.”
He was inspired to create the song three years ago when he saw a guy walking down a downtown Atlanta street with a baby in his arm and his pants slipping below his hips. “He had his underwear showing,” Platt recalled. The song came to him spontaneously. He started chanting the chorus to “Pants on the Ground.”
“He was being disrespectful so I wanted to embarrass him,” Platt said. “He rolled his eyes and pulled his pants up a little bit.”
Platt has since done that to others as well.
I tried to glean some background about him. He said he was shot in the eye when he was age three and now at age 63, is “on disability.” I asked what types of jobs he’s had over the years and he said he can fix cars. That’s pretty much all I could get. He said he loves to sing and exercise. (On the show, he proved he could do both at the same time.)
He went to the Georgia Dome last June for auditions without realizing he was way out of the age limit of 16 to 28. The producers heard his song and fell in love with him. They probably knew instantly they were going to put him in front of the judges for pure entertainment sake. “I can do things better than a lot of 28 year olds,” he said.
Why did he call himself “General” when he was never in the military? “I’m a general of the civil rights movement,” he said, saying he marched with Martin Luther King Jr. and Hosea Williams back in the 1960s. (Williams apparently coined that nickname for him.) According to my colleague Eric Stirgus, we have checked out his claims in the past and there is photographic evidence of his civil rights past. He said he would often parry with Atlanta city council members.
Platt said he likes to talk to government officials about helping the downtrodden, the poor, the homeless. “I like to help keep people from being dominated. This should be a civilized state. Everyone should be treated equal.”
I asked if he had other songs and he said he had a female version of “Pants on the Ground,” too. He also said he’s pondering offers to record the song for potential sale. (I’d say he better do it quickly!)
He concluded the interview with this advice: “Be a man. Don’t be walking around showing yourself to the world! I don’t think that’s right!”
My colleague Mike Morris dug up some more history about the guy from our archives.
‘Pants on the Ground' singer a civil rights veteran
By Mike Morris
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
America became acquainted with Larry Platt Tuesday night, but the "Pants on the Ground" singer has been an Atlanta fixture for years.
The Atlanta man became an overnight Internet sensation with his "American Idol" song about pulling up your pants. Comments on his performance raced across Twitter even before he stopped singing. A video was quickly downloaded on youtube, and registered over 50,000 views. Among Google trends this morning, "pants on the ground" and "pants on the ground video" were Nos. 2 and 3 on the most-searched terms ("Teddy Pendergrass" was tops).
Thirteen "Pants on the Ground" fan pages on Facebook already have a total of more than 94,000 followers.
Platt, who turned 63 a couple of months after last year's Idol audition, calls himself a "four-star general in the civil rights movement." In fact, he had his feet on the ground in the '60s, when he took part in the Selma-to-Montgomery civil rights march.
Platt told the AJC in 2008 that he was shot in the eye as a child and has been attacked by police dogs and suffered beatings in past civil rights efforts.
Platt, who marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, talked about his memories during a panel discussion at the Roswell Public Library.
Four years ago, Platt made the news during former Mayor Bill Campbell's federal corruption trial.
U.S. marshals at the Russell Federal Courthouse in downtown Atlanta confiscated drawings that Platt had done in the courtroom, citing issues of "inappropriateness."
In his ink-on-paper drawings, Platt depicted Campbell, his defense team, the judge and jurors as winged angels. Prosecution witnesses were shown with horns.
"God lets me see people as they are," Platt told the AJC at the time.
According to the AJC account of the incident, "after his drawings were taken, an agitated Platt stood in the hallway, shaking and near tears. Witnessing the scene, Campbell placed his hand on Platt's shoulder and told the marshal, ‘This man marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.' U.S. District Judge Richard Story told the marshals to return Platt's drawings." |

Mesti cari British lah ni.... Sir Elton?
Producer: Stars queuing for Cowell spot on `Idol'
By LYNN ELBER, AP Television Writer Lynn Elber, Ap Television Writer – Wed Jan 13, 6:53 pm ET
LOS ANGELES – The search for a new "American Idol" judge to replace Simon Cowell next season is quickly taking on epic proportions.
British mogul Simon Fuller, who created the template for the U.S. show with "Pop Idol" in the U.K., says there's been a global outpouring of celebrity interest in the job.
And there's no apparently no rush to fill it.
"A day doesn't pass that I don't get a call from an agent of a superstar saying, 'Can we talk?' ... Everyone's interested, and that's going to go on month after month," said Fuller, whose company, 19 Entertainment, produces "American Idol" with FremantleMedia North America.
Fuller, in Los Angeles from London to watch the start of Hollywood week auditions for "American Idol," said he has enjoyed seeing the chemistry emerge between newcomer Ellen DeGeneres and the acerbic Cowell.
DeGeneres was chosen to replace original panelist Paula Abdul, who left over a salary dispute. Guest judges, including Victoria Beckham, filled in during the cross-country auditions that kicked off the season Tuesday. The episodes from Hollywood with DeGeneres start airing Feb. 9.
The comedian and daytime talk show host is "dynamic" and her relationship with Cowell "will blow people away," Fuller said after observing the pair at work for the first time.
DeGeneres is also proving an attraction for the slot that will open when Cowell leaves to produce "The X Factor," based on his hit U.K. series, for Fox. The new talent contest is set to debut in fall 2011.
"American Idol," consistently TV's top-rated program, will remain in its traditional January to May rotation on Fox.
"It's a testament to it ('Idol') that we attracted someone as brilliant as Ellen. When we have to do something about Simon, I'll be in the luxury position of looking at all the greatest stars of the world," Fuller said. "We can do so much with it."
Fuller, who didn't name names, said change is healthy. He noted that people couldn't imagine "American Idol" without Abdul but that the ninth season began this week with impressive preliminary ratings, as nearly 30 million people tuned in. |
