Badminton: Chong Wei worries over future
LACK of quality sparring partners is not the issue as far as Lee Chong Wei is concerned but what worries the World No 1 is the almost non-existence of national back-up shuttlers.
Chong Wei has warned that the BA of Malaysia (BAM) must keep blooding back-up players on the international stage regularly or they will struggle in the near future especially with several young China players already showing promise.
Sending them, said Chong Wei, to grand prix events should be a start and once they are ranked higher, they can move up to the Super Series and the player feels BAM must be consistent even if there are no immediate results.
"I am used to training with what we have in our national team at the moment but we cannot keep lamenting the lack of sparring partners or talk about the wealth of talent China has. It has remained that way for a long time now," said Chong Wei.
"I am also not competing in too many tournaments and what we have are a bunch of young players who have yet to make a breakthrough. BAM should be exposing them to international events like the Vietnam and Taiwan Opens which will be held soon and continue sending them for more.
"By doing that, we can hope to see our back-up players improving on their performances.
"It is normal to see China having three or four players in major tournaments while we will have two or sometimes, I am alone but I am used to this.
"China, despite their depth, still depend on Lin Dan but in the coming years they will have other players we have to watch out for.
"Should I continue playing after next year's Olympics? This is something I have to face. It will be nice if we have more quality players in our ranks."
China are no longer putting the emphasis on seniors like Bao Chunlai while Chen Jin is already on the decline and Lin Dan is expected to call it a day after the London Olympics.
However, they will still be formidable with a new legion led by Chen Long with Wang Zhengming and Tian Houwei not far behind.
Even Denmark have a special talent in 17-year-old Viktor Axelson while Indonesia can depend on their club system to produce a player to replace Taufik Hidayat, although he may not be in the same class as the former Olympic and world champion.
Malaysia's biggest prospect is 18-year-old Zulfadli Zulkifli but he needs some time before making a breakthrough and in the meantime it should be the likes of Liew Daren, Chan Kwong Beng and Chong Weio Feng who must make a bigger initiative.
After all, they have been sparring with Chong Wei for more than two years and that should be the motivation for them to do well.

MSN minta BAM buat kajian menyeluruh
PASANGAN emas negara, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong akan kekal bergandingan sekurang-kurangnya sehingga Sukan Olimpik London 2012, tetapi hakikatnya status jurulatih, Rexy Mainaky mencetus persoalan utama.
Diakui bekas pakar beregu dunia itu menjadi ‘orang penting’ yang melonjakkan nama Kien Keat-Boon Heong ketika zaman kegemilangan mereka pada 2006 dan 2007, tetapi sentuhan emas jurulatih yang pernah memenangi pingat emas Sukan Olimpik Atlanta 1996 itu tampak semakin pudar apabila prestasi anak didiknya itu semakin merudum.
Sebarang langkah drastik termasuk menukar Rexy menuntut kajian menyeluruh. - Zolkples Embong, Ketua Pengarah MSN
Setakat ini, gandingan berkenaan hanya mampu menjuarai satu daripada lapan kejohanan disertai tahun ini, itu pun kejuaraan kelas dua Grand Prix (GP) Emas Terbuka Malaysia menerusi kemenangan percuma selepas pasangan Indonesia Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan menarik diri di final.
Boon Heong ketika diajukan persoalan sama ada dia dan Kien Keat perlu menukar jurulatih berkata: “Terserah kepada Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM).”
Ketua Pengarah Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN), Datuk Zolkples Embong berkata sebarang langkah drastik termasuk menukar jurulatih pasangan itu menuntut kajian menyeluruh.
“BAM pasti akan membuat ‘bedah siasat’ selepas kegagalan gandingan itu dan kita akan berbincang mencari jalan penyelesaian terbaik dalam mengembalikan semula prestasi sebenar mereka, terutama memastikan mereka mampu menggegar di Sukan Olimpik tahun depan,” katanya.
