Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik Gesa Najib Letak Jawatan(#47 sedia ke mahkamah)

Former MCA president Ling Liong Sik was once embroiled in the PKFZ debacle, which was among the biggest government-related financial scandals until 1MDB came along. But he was eventually acquitted and proceeded to disappear from the public eye even as MCA began a descent into irrelevance.
His recent re-emergence to join the ranks of prominent critics of Prime Minister Najib Razak was surprising to say the least. It would be fair to say that the Chinese community by and large had never expected anyone of any consequence in MCA to step forward and oppose the PM, let alone a former president of the party. And, sure enough, MCA has since made it clear that Ling’s words were his own.
The clarity of Ling’s accusation – that the Prime Minister had public funds deposited into his personal bank account – was certainly startling. While everyone who has been following the news knows that Najib did receive RM2.6 billion many are unsure whether it was from an Arab donor or donors, as the PM himself has claimed.
What’s equally interesting is that Ling has refused to back down and has even challenged Najib to take him to court, saying that he stood by his every word. By the looks of it, he’s playing a cagey game, but then, who can say for sure? Is he bluffing? Or does he really have something that makes him certain that the court will rule in his favour?
Given that Ling is a Mahathir man, it will be interesting to see what exactly the former prime minister has armed his people with.
Najib seems confident that whatever Liong Sik has against him will not be enough. He has let his lawyers go much further than they have dared to do with the Wall Street Journal.
Perhaps Najib will really take this to court. We should know by tomorrow. Najib’s lawyer has told the press that Ling has until today to apologise and retract his statement.
The Rakyat are looking closely at this latest challenge against Najib and what concrete action he will take. If the PM even so much as flinches – by hesitating to file a suit, for example – a lot of people are sure to judge him guilty.
Whatever happens, Ling’s re-emergence into politics does not bode well for Najib. It simply means that Mahathir’s campaign to oust him is still on.
