AUSTRALIAN OPEN – Welcome back, Wang Lin!
Wang Lin (photo) has certainly not lost her soft touch. More than 6 months after her knee injury and her operation in Germany, the reigning World Champion was back on court on Wednesday, in Melbourne’s Yonex Australian Open Badminton Championships, for a clash with the second seed of the tournament, Yip Pui Yin.
And just like the last three times they met, Wang beat Yip, this time in straight games 21-19, 21-9, a clear sign that the Chinese is back on track at the right time and that she will certainly be one of the shuttlers aiming at an Olympic gold next year in London. Without any points for the past six months, Wang Lin has slipped just beyond the top 100 and will need some good victories in Australia to make it back to the top 30 if she wants to enter Super Series’ main draws soon for the beginning of the Olympic qualification period. Her ranking, however, will not allow her to fight to keep her World Champion crown as she will not qualify for the London meeting.

Koo-Tan all pumped up to give fans a big treat
KUALA LUMPUR: A fitter and more solid looking Koo Kien Keat aims to give local badminton fans a big treat when he and partner Tan Boon Heong take to the court in the Kuala Lumpur Open at the KLBA Stadium today.
Top seeds and world No. 3 Kien Keat-Boon Heong are the marquee names in the opening leg of the Proton National Badminton Circuit.
After enjoying a first-round bye yesterday, they are ready to fend off the challenges from their compatriots and a host of aspiring youngsters from the back-up and Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) squads.
Apart from maintaining their status in the local scene, Kien Keat-Boon Heong are also all pumped up to restore their image on the world stage. Kien Keat said yesterday that he and Boon Heong were working on becoming more consistent in their game – especially after the heartbreaks and misses in several major international tournaments.
The Ipoh-born Kien Keat said he was working on a few ‘weak’ areas in his game in a bid to become a more complete player.
He also acknowledged that it was not enough to just rely on speed and power.
“Boon Heong and I are disappointed to have let slip a few major titles in the last couple of months,” lamented Kien Keat.
Last month, Kien Keat-Boon Heong squandered a five-point lead in the decider of the All-England final to relinquish the crown to Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen at Birmingham. They went through the same painful experience at last year’s World Championships in Paris, Japan Open and Asian Games in Guangzhou – running out of steam after brilliant starts.
“Boon Heong and I are physically fit. We are probably in our best physical condition now. What we need to do now is to be more focused.
“In training, we are learning to be more steady and committed,” said Kien Keat.
“We are also learning to play consistently well. Sometimes, Boon Heong is exceptional and I go through a rough patch and vice-versa.
“It is important for both of us to hit the right cord at the same time.”
Kien Keat, who looked more muscular, said there were many positives they could take after achieving several breakthroughs at the All-England last month, especially in ending their two-year winless streak against China’s Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.
“Our confidence is back. Our ultimate goal is the World Championships in London (in August). This time, we are determined to hit the jackpot,” said Kien Keat.
After the Kuala Lumpur Open, Kien Keat-Boon Heong will take part in the fifth leg of the Super Series in India from April 26-May 1 and the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold in Alor Setar, Kedah, from May 3-8.
Today in the KL Open, Kien Keat-Boon Heong will take on Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han, who survived a strong challenge from Nelson Heg Wei Kiat-Teo Ee Yi for a 18-21, 21-18, 28-26 win.

Hafiz kisses his hopes of qualifying for world meet goodbye
PETALING JAYA: Mohd Hafiz Hashim’s slim hopes of qualifying for the World Championships in August went up in smoke after he crashed out in the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne yesterday.
The KLRC shuttler, who is ranked 33rd in the world, needed to win the Australian Open title to at least stand a chance of breaking into the top 24.
However, all Hafiz could do was go down 17-21, 11-21 to Japan’s Sho Sasaki, a player the Malaysian used to defeat with relative ease.
A country can have two shuttlers in the competition if they are ranked among the top 64 and a maximum of three if all are in the top 24.
Hafiz is currently the third ranked Malaysian behind Lee Chong Wei and Wong Choong Hann.
Meanwhile, Choong Hann booked his place in the quarter-finals after dispatching Frenchman Matthieu Lo 13-21, 21-18, 21-14. The veteran shuttler will now face Takuma Ueda of Japan for a place in the semi-finals.
In the women’s doubles event, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty showed that they are still up for it by thrashing Australians Louisa Ma-Tara Pilven 21-12, 21-4 in the first round before another comprehensive 21-10, 21-8 victory over Peru’s Christina Aicardi-Claudia Rivero to qualify for the quarter-finals.
The former world No. 1 will now face top seeds Mizuki Fujii-Reika Kakiiwa of Japan for a semi-final spot.
There was, however, no joy for sister Ng Hui Lin-Ng Hui Ern who crashed out in the second round against another Japanese pair, Matsutomo Misaki-Ayaka Takahashi, losing 18-21, 16-21.
In other matches, third seeds Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen and Chan Chong Ming-Lee Wan Wah also qualified for the men’s doubles quarter-finals after winning their respective second round matches.
Teik Chai-Bin Shen beat Taiwan’s Hsu Jen Hao-Lin Yu Jui 21-16, 21-6 while Chong Ming-Wan Wah defeated Ben McCarthy-Raj Veeran of Australia 21-9, 21-12.
In mixed doubles, the unseeded Bin Shen-Hui Ern combination reached the quarter-finals after upsetting eighth seeds Lee Hock Lai-Priscilla Lun of the United States 21-18, 21-13 to set up a daunting date with second seeds Songphon Anugritayawon-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand.
