And a well deserved standing ovation from the crowd who were at the edge of their seats in a full packed arena.

Genie Bouchard has laughed off the "Twirlgate" controversy at the Australian Open but has a special request for the male players.

Serena Williams and Eugenie Bouchard React to Australian Open Twirl Request

Serena Williams and Eugenie Bouchard find themselves at the centre of a sexism row at the Australian Open, after Channel 7's Ian Cohen asked both to "give a twirl" in front of the Melbourne crowd.

Bouchard Laughs Off Controversy
Friday, Jan. 23

Bouchard attempted to quash growing discontent over the "twirl" request on Friday, raising her own tongue-in-cheek solution, per BBC Sport:

I'm not offended. I'm fine with being asked to twirl if they ask the guys to flex.

I think it was an in-the-moment thing and it was funny.

Serena Uncomfortable with "Twirl" Request
Thursday, Jan. 22

Serena Williams commented on allegations of sexism at the Australian Open after she and Canadian player Bouchard were asked to spin around while being interviewed on court by Channel 7's Ian Cohen.

As noted by the Press Association, via the Guardian, Cohen asked them to “give a twirl” after their early-round victories. Williams—seeking a sixth career win at the Melbourne-based tournament—played down claims of sexism, but insisted it’s not something the top players in the men’s game would be asked to do:

A commentator asked me to twirl. I wouldn’t ask Rafa [Nadal] or Roger [Federer] to twirl. Whether it’s sexist or not, I don’t know. I can’t answer that.

I didn’t really want to twirl because I was just like, you know, I don’t need all the extra attention. But, yeah, it was fine.

I don’t think and look that deep into it. Life is far too short to focus on that. We have so many other problems we want to deal with that we should focus on. Whether I twirl or not, it’s not the end of the world. It’s about being positive and just moving forward.

Williams sisters prevail in third-round three-setters
AP | SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 2015

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) Serena Williams saw that older sister Venus was progressing to the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2011 and it inspired her own comeback win Saturday at the Australian Open.

Top-ranked Serena Williams made a lackluster start to her third-round match against No. 26-ranked Elina Svitolina on Rod Laver Arena - knowing when she walked out for her match that Venus was down a set and a break on a nearby court - but picked up her game after realizing her sister was advancing with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Camila Giorgi.

''I saw (Venus') score and thought `Wow she's winning, well I can do better,''' Serena Williams said after her 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win. ''I thought, `Wow, she's been through so much with her illness, with everything that she's had to do. Gosh, if she can do it, I'm perfectly healthy, I'm fine. I should be able to do it, too.'

''It just got me so motivated, really helped me push through those next two sets at a rapid rate.''

She'll have to be at the top of her game in the next round she meets No. 24 Garbine Muguruza, who beat her in the second round at the French Open last year. Muguruza defeated Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.

In the other fourth-round match in that quarter, two-time champion Victoria Azarenka will meet 2014 finalist Dominika Cibulkova.

Azarenka, the winner here in 2012 and 2013 but who is unseeded this year because of an injury-interrupted 2014, had a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 25 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Cibulkova beat No. 19 Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-2.

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka cruised to his third straight-sets victory with service breaks to clinch all three sets on his way to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 win over Jarkko Nieminen. He'll have a score to settle in the next round against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who had a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Vasek Pospisil.

Wawrinka lost to Garcia-Lopez in the first round of the French Open last year, making him the first first-time major winner in 12 years to lose in the first round of his next Grand Slam event.

Eighth-seeded Milos Raonic reached the fourth round at a fourth consecutive Grand Slam tournament, firing 22 aces in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 win over Benjamin Becker of Germany. He will next play No. 12 Feliciano Lopez, who had a 7-6 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Jerzy Janowicz.

Two American men lost night matches, with No. 5 Kei Nishikori, the U.S. Open finalist, beating Steve Johnson 6-7 (7), 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 and Gilles Muller defeating No. 19 John Isner 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-4.

Venus Williams couldn't contain her delight after her win on Margaret Court Arena, beaming a smile as she turned to wave to all sides of the stadium. She said the sibling relationship, and rivalry, helped both of the Williams sisters.

''I've been motivated by Serena though since day one, since `97. She's always been I think someone that anyone can learn from. The way she faces her life, the way she is fearless on the court,'' Venus Williams said. "We've had the fortunate relationship to be able to motivate each other and grow from each other. I don't think I could have done the things I've done without her.''

The 34-year-old, seven-time major winner next faces sixth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, a semifinalist here last year and Wimbledon finalist in 2012, who advanced with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Varvara Lepchenko. In an all-American third-rounder, Madison Brengle beat Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-2.

Venus Williams was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition called Sjogren's syndrome in 2011, which can cause joint pain and saps energy. In the 13 Grand Slam tournaments after her fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon that year, she skipped two and made first-round exits in four others, including the 2014 Australian Open.

Williams was as close as two points from defeat in the second set, and Giorgi also had a chance to serve for the match but couldn't hold.

''Well, this old cat has a few tricks left,'' Venus Williams said in her on-court interview.

''I like to win titles, whether it's a smaller event or a big event. That's what I play for. So, yes, great, it's great to be in the second week but is fourth round my goal when I come to these tournaments? N
