'HANYUT' TIDAK MENGARUT

BUAT julung-julung kalinya, Suria mengetengahkan kenakalan anak Melayu bukan melalui Anak Metropolitan atau Selagi Ada Kasih, tetapi melalui siri doku drama realiti, Hanyut.

Persoalan tabu yang biasanya dielakkan berdasarkan agama dan bangsa kita seperti seks di luar nikah, pelacuran sesama remaja, hubungan seks sejenis dan salah guna dadah dilakonkan semula untuk tontonan semua.

Tentulah ia bukan bertujuan menconteng arang ke muka sendiri atau mengajar remaja perkara-perkara yang tidak sepatutnya, tetapi menceritakan kejadian sebenar yang berlaku di kalangan remaja kita.

Dalam episod pertama yang disiarkan Isnin lalu, penonton dikejutkan dengan dua kisah gadis yang melakukan hubungan seks pada usia semuda 13 dan 16 tahun.

Seorang daripada mereka tidak tahu ayah kandung anaknya kerana dirogol dua kenalan semasa mabuk.

Seorang lagi diperkosa teman lelakinya sendiri di bilik tidur rumahnya.

Kedua-dua remaja ini berkata perbuatan zina adalah konteks perbualan biasa di antara rakan-rakan mereka.

Di kalangan mereka, yang masih dara dianggap 'kental' dan kandungan anak luar nikah lumrah.

Kedua-dua remaja perempuan yang sekarang ini berada di bawah jagaan Pertapis, seolah-olah menyalahkan ibu bapa masing-masing.

Seperti setiap alasan remaja bermasalah, mereka merintih kurang kasih sayang, tidak pernah mengenali bapa mereka dan menagih perhatian daripada teman-teman yang malangnya sudah pun terjebak dengan kumpulan samseng remaja.

Pastinya setiap minggu, para remaja ini akan menggunakan formula alasan yang sama.

Sehingga akhirnya episod pertama Hanyut itu, remaja berikut masih tidak menyalahkan diri sendiri.

Ibunya meninggalkannya sendirian kerana mencari nafkah untuk menyara kehidupan seharian mereka.

Mereka kurang belas simpati kepada si ibu yang bertukus-lumus untuk menampung hidup mereka.

Mereka lupa bahawa mereka yang sudah pun bergelar ibu pada usia semuda itu, bakal dipersalahkan jika anak mereka sendiri terjebak dengan perkara sedemikian atau yang lebih hebat lagi.

Sindrom viscious cycle ini bakal berulang di setiap generasi akan datang.

Ia tidak akan pupus selagi remaja sendiri tidak mempunyai akal fikiran untuk bertindak sebaik mungkin untuk diri sendiri.

Tetapi apa yang pasti, Hanyut telah berjaya mengupas dan menyebarkan realiti budaya anak remaja kita yang wujud kini.

Jika sebelum ini Anak Metropolitan dikatakan 'mengajar' atau 'memberi galakan' untuk penonton remaja berkelakuan demikian, Hanyut bertujuan untuk membuka mata kita, bagi mengenal pasti tentang adanya kejadian berikut di kalangan masyarakat Melayu.

Sebagai seorang penonton, saya pasti ramai mengakui tentang topik-topik relevan yang bakal dipaparkan Hanyut, apatah lagi jika dibandingkan dengan topik kurang bernas yang diketengahkan E.C., sebuah drama tempatan terbitan Eaglevision. :clap::clap::clap:

Mungkin ramai juga akan bersetuju jika E.C. dipendekkan kepada masa setengah jam dan Hanyut dipanjangkan kepada satu jam.

Banyak perspektif yang Hanyut tidak boleh muatkan disebabkan kesuntukan masa.

Umpamanya, ibu bapa remaja bermasalah tadi boleh menceritakan pengalaman mereka membesarkan anak masing-masing.

Mereka boleh memberi contoh perubahan perangai anak mereka yang boleh ibu bapa lain ketahui. Kesudahan dan kesedaran remaja itu juga boleh dipaparkan dengan lebih mendalam.

Ini semua lebih bermakna daripada menonton sekumpulan yuppies atau anak muda yang bekerja dan berpendidikan tinggi sibuk dengan cinta monyet.

Jika dilihat dari segi konsep hiburan, jalan cerita E.C. boleh dipadatkan dalam masa 20 minit.

Malah tidak keterlaluan jika saya katakan para pelakon Hanyut jauh lebih hebat daripada pelakon-pelakon cantik E.C.:clap::clap:

Oleh itu, syabas kepada Screenbox atas konsep Hanyut yang bernas lagi berani itu. Ia berpijak di bumi nyata.

Jika Suria memberi lebih ruang untuk konsep rancangan sehebat Hanyut, kita pasti akan berada di gelombang media yang bertaraf antarabangsa satu hari nanti.

Tetapi, jika kita masih dibuai konsep sitkom Barat yang cuba dimelayukan, makin jauhlah kita hanyut.

Hanyut boleh disaksikan setiap Isnin mulai 8.30 malam di Suria.

'BENCANA AKIBAT PESTA DEKAT MAKAM WALI'

BANDA ACEH - Bagi kebanyakan penduduk Aceh yang terselamat daripada gelombang tsunami, mereka mempunyai cerita di sebalik bencana yang meranapkan hampir semua rumah di Banda Aceh, kecuali Masjid Baiturrahman yang masih tersergam gagah, itu.

Bagi mereka, bencana yang mengorbankan beratus ribu nyawa dan meranapkan bangunan besar dan kecil itu berpunca daripada satu pesta hiburan yang dianjurkan pihak-pihak tertentu.

Walaupun sudah dilarang penduduk setempat, pesta itu tetap diadakan dekat makam seorang wali, Teunku Syah Kuala, di Kampung Kuala.

Teunku Syah Kuala seorang pendakwah yang dikatakan membawa masuk ajaran Islam ke bumi Aceh.

Sebaik saja pesta itu berakhir, tsunami melanda Aceh esoknya. Bagaimanapun, masjid-masjid di Banda Aceh dan sekitarnya terselamat.

Beberapa penduduk Banda Aceh yang ditemui mempercayai bencana itu disebabkan pesta tersebut.

Mengenai masjid yang tidak roboh, mereka berkata: 'Itu rumah Allah. Allah yang memeliharanya.' - Utusan Malaysia.

After seeing Brad Pitt, 41, gallivanting joyfully with his pals in the movie Ocean's Twelve, I wasn't prepared to see him split up with his wife Jennifer Aniston, 35, after seven years of togetherness - four and a half of those in wedlock - to become a real-life Ocean's Half.

At a time which just saw Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie reportedly renewing their wedding vows, I actually didn't see the Pitts hitting the pits.

They had problems, but Aniston forgetting to thank her hubby for her Golden Globe trophy one time isn't exactly the crash and burn of a media circus.

To look into the anatomy of a break-up, you have to first look at the anatomy.

The sign of trouble most recent was the non-appearance of Aniston's wedding ring on her finger last month when she landed in Los Angeles after a promo tour with Pitt for Ocean's Twelve.

The damage control was put to simple forgetfulness, committed presumably in Rachel of Friends style, although Pitt was reported to have been 'furious'.

We were put on notice.

But they apparently spent New Year's Day together on the Caribbean island of Anguilla with Friends co-star Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette.

The split is a pity because of all the authentic Tinseltown Twosomes, these two, Pitt and Aniston, were the one Golden Couple who I thought would last the distance of, if not the marathon, then at least the length of a good middle-distance run.

They looked made for each other. And mind you, they were really golden.

Some couples you prefer them singly, because when they are together they just rub you the wrong way. Witness Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

But Pitt and Aniston were really likeable together. They looked compatible, they looked beautiful and darn, did they look like the title of one of Aniston's movie comedies - Picture Perfect.

They seemed as picture-perfect as, well, Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Back in the old days, before that relationship went kaput circa 1997, I used to think that pound for pound, blond hair for blonde hair, Pitt and Paltrow were the dream couple.

Then Aniston came along and complemented effortlessly Pitt's seemingly unhurried, easygoing nature with her kooky sense of fun and an adorable appeal already endorsed by millions of Friends viewers.

They were a charmed, universally approved union of big-screen glamour and TV fandom with Pitt even popping up popularly in one episode of his missus' hit show in 2001.

In the face of the big split now, isn't it ironic that Paltrow is today happily and contentedly married with a child, something which Pitt has been announcing publicly for a long while is his No. 1 domestic wish?

He once famously revealed that he was 'in negotiations' with Aniston about having babies, poignantly pointing out that in putting relationship before work, 'that gives it a better chance of working out'.

Is parenthood then, or more accurately the pursuit of it, the glue that came unstuck?

Pitt apparently wanted children while Aniston apparently preferred to set a few things, career-wise, in motion first.

Aniston, at last count, has about six movies in the pipeline after last year's Along Came Polly. It didn't help either that Friends was a goldmine with plenty of gold still in the mine.

It seemed to go on forever, taking up precious baby time until only last year when it finally ended.

At this same time last year, I was reading a report in Us Weekly, a gossipy American entertainment magazine, saying that she was finally readying herself for motherhood.

'It will happen when Friends is over,' she declared at that time.

Pointedly, the report also stated that Pitt would soon be starting filming for Ocean's Twelve.

In the business of the twain who wants to get together, too much other business always gets in the way.

Some current reports about the break-up have suggested that Aniston's upward career path as she zeros completely into movies has collided with Pitt's downward one, attributed to his expensive, under-performing epic flick Troy.

Meaning they were both hurrying off in different directions.

I'm sad that career collision, distance and probably the basic bane of domesticity itself have prevented my favourite famous couple from staying a couple.

As a final act of supreme irony, Aniston's next two films are apparently titled Rumor Has It and Derailed.

Life does imitate art in a funny way. Sometimes it loses to it, too.

They are co-owners of the Plan B production company with producer Brad Grey, who earlier last week was hired to replace Sherry Lansing as head of the Paramount studio.


Plan B has more than 20 movies in development. Their celebrity wattage means they can greenlight non-studio projects.

Their first production is Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. Their next project is Mark Haddon's Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time.

In 2003, Aniston was ranked as the most powerful celebrity on the planet in the Forbes Global Celebrity 100 list. Pitt was not on the list.

The members of the Celebrity 100 are awarded a power ranking which gives most weight to celebrity earnings over the past 12 months.

Also considered are other popularity metrics including Internet presence, press clippings, magazine cover stories and mentions on television and radio.

ISTERI MANGSA RAMPAS LARI DI JB


KESERONOKAN pasangan suami isteri berbelanja sehari suntuk di Johor Bahru menjadi hampa selepas beg tangan si isteri dirampas lari dalam perjalanan pulang ke Singapura.

Kejadian yang berlaku dalam sekelip mata di Jalan Tun Razak itu membuat pasangan empat anak tersebut serik untuk ke Johor lagi.

Encik Amir Mohd, 41 tahun, dan isterinya baru selesai berbelanja di Holiday Inn Plaza apabila beg tangan si isteri dirampas di jalan raya yang sesak sekitar 5 petang Ahad lalu.

Beg itu dirampas ketika Encik Amir dan isterinya, yang hanya ingin dikenali sebagai Cik Ida, 33 tahun, sedang menunggang motosikal mereka kira-kira 400 meter dari pusat imigresen Johor Bahru.

Motosikal itu masih sedang bergerak perlahan apabila sebuah motosikal lain berwarna hitam, yang dinaiki dua lelaki berjaket hitam, menerpa dari belakang dan merampas beg tangan tersebut.

Motosikal pencuri itu mempunyai lesen pendaftaran Singapura, tetapi ia dipercayai motosikal curian.

Encik Amir, teknisyen kanan, berkata:

'Saya mula sedar kami dirompak setelah isteri saya menjerit dan mula menangis. Ketika itu, motosikal tadi sudah memecut laju. Saya tidak mahu kejar kerana keadaan jalan raya yang sibuk. Saya cuma mementingkan keselamatan isteri.'

Pasangan itu kehilangan sekitar wang tunai $1,000, termasuk dalam mata wang Singapura dan Malaysia, kad-kad kredit dan dokumen perjalanan.

Mereka yang menginap di Marsiling percaya rompakan tersebut merupakan kerja sebuah sindiket seberang Tambak.

'Keluarga saya di Johor dan kawan-kawan semua memberitahu tentang kejadian serupa yang menimpa mereka atau keluarga mereka.

'Cara rompakan dan motosikal yang digunakan pun sama. Saya harap warga Singapura lebih berhati-hati dan sentiasa berwaspada, lebih-lebih lagi jika mereka rasa mereka diekori,' kata Cik Ida.

TERSELAMAT ATAS KAYU, KEMUDIAN SAMPAN, KEMUDIAN RAKIT

KLANG - Encik Ari Afrizal, 22 tahun, mangsa tsunami ketiga dari Aceh yang diselamatkan dan dibawa ke Malaysia, berkata beliau berpaut pada sebatang kayu sebelum menemui sampan pada hari kedua dan sebuah rakit pada hari kelima.

Beliau terapungapung selama 15 hari di Lautan Hindi sebelum diselamatkan kapal kontena Al Yamamah yang berdaftar di Muscat Oman dan sedang menuju ke West Port di Pelabuhan Klang.

Encik Ari, seorang tukang kayu dari Desa Kabong, Krueng Sabee, Aceh Jaya, ditemui dalam keadaan kelaparan dan luka di paha dan punggung dalam rakit itu sekitar 12 tengah hari Ahad lalu, 320 kilometer dari pantai barat Sumatera.

Menurut Encik Ari, pada hari tragedi 26 Disember beliau sedang membina rumah di Banda Aceh.

'Saya menyelamatkan diri dengan berlari ke bukit bersama penduduk lain tetapi tidak sempat, lalu dihanyutkan arus ke tengah laut,' katanya.

Beliau berpaut pada sebatang kayu sebelum nampak sebuah sampan di tengah laut.

'Sampan itu yang menjadi tempat saya berlindung selama empat hari. Saya hanya minum air hujan dan tidak makan apa-apa,' jelas beliau dalam laporan akhbar Berita Harian Malaysia semalam.

Encik Ari berkata pada hari kelima berada di laut, beliau menemui sebuah rakit berbumbung terapung-apung di lautan.

Menurutnya, dalam rakit itu ada pakaian, tiga liter air dalam tangki, 20 liter minyak tanah, lima lampu isyarat dan alat menangkap ikan termasuk jala.

Meskipun beliau cuba menjala, tiada ikan yang sangkut.

'Jadi, saya hanya makan isi kelapa yang terapung-apung di laut. Itu pun terpaksa mengopeknya dengan gigi,' imbas beliau. - BHM.

Eric Khoo on his canned Idol video
It's an expensive lesson to learn





HAS Eric Khoo lost it? His film-making talent, that is.

This is what some people thought when they saw the music video of Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah's debut single, I Dream.

Eric, the acclaimed maker of Mee Pok Man and 12 Storeys, had earlier been touted as its director.

But what viewers saw on screen didn't look like Eric's work. In fact, some of them thought it was 'horrible' and told him so.

He told The New Paper: 'I had nothing to do with that!'

And with just cause as that video was not directed by him.

It was shot hurriedly by MediaCorp's Channel 5 to replace his version which was deemed too sensitive and controversial.

The original features Taufik (right) working in a pub. The setting was deemed inappropriate for a Muslim.

Although Eric hasn't seen the Channel 5 version, he confessed that 'the worst thing' about the fiasco was receiving messages from people who've seen it and said how 'horrible' it was.

He claimed that he even received an SMS from a puzzled Taufik: 'He was like, what the hell is going on.'


'We shot a nice, sophisticated, moody video. But I guess it's an expensive lesson to learn on hindsight,' said Eric.

The New Paper was unable to contact Taufik as he has been 'released' from promotional duties for the next few days and is back serving his NS, according to his manager.

STARRY-EYED WAITER

Eric took a day to shoot the video at Thumper bar in Goodwood Park Hotel on Dec 4, in which Taufik was portrayed as a waiter who cleans tables and dreams of becoming a pop star.


More than 100 fans turned up, volunteering to be extras.

But MediaCorp and Sony-BMG later decided it was too controversial and scrapped it for the Channel 5 version, which was produced in less than a week. (See other report below.)

According to Eric, the organisations were 'uncomfortable' with the pub setting and the 'sensitivities' associated with it.

He said there's even talk that the starry-eyed waiter character Taufik portrays is a stereotype.

Sony-BMG was present at the shoot, and initially approved it for the scheduled Dec 22 air date.

But things turned around after MediaCorp highlighted its concerns about the content to Sony-BMG and Hype Records Artiste Networks (Taufik's management company) after viewing it.

Ms Kelly Chew, managing director of Sony-BMG, explained: 'We decided to pull the plug on the video after consultation with opinion makers, due to the inappropriate use of venue setting.

'We deeply regret this oversight on our part. This episode is very much behind us now and we are happy with the direction we have set for Taufik's album.'

Ms Selena Ho, vice-president for network programming and promotions for Channel 5, clarified that approval for the music video does not lie with MediaCorp.

In an e-mail statement to The New Paper, she added: 'We proceeded to produce the video in support of Taufik following Sony-BMG and Artiste Networks' request.

'Sony-BMG has committed to an advertising campaign with MediaCorp for the music video.'

So was Eric being insensitive or were the organisations merely being over-sensitive?

Eric admitted he came up with the pub concept, but that it was conceived during the time when Singapore Idol was down to Taufik and runner-up Sylvester Sim.

He recalled: 'I thought shooting at a bar would be quite cool. I ran the idea by the boys, and they were receptive.

'Initially, I wanted him to be pouring and serving alcohol. But I did feel there would be some sensitivities there, so I had him just wiping bar-top tables. It's not like we were showing him drinking.

'Maybe I should've just put him in an ice-cream parlour!' he joked.

As for accusations of typecasting, Eric said that 'the whole spirit of Idol is that a nobody can become a somebody'.

He added that the role of a waiter was 'appropriate' for this story line.

'If you look around at pubs here, you see young kids working as waiters or waitresses. Is it something so bad?' he said.

Eric declined to reveal the budget, only that a 'substantial amount' was spent.

Sources say that the cost of local artistes' music videos which are shot in Singapore range from $2,000 to $25,000.

Viewers generally felt it was the right move to can Eric's version.

If the original video was aired, 'it'll become an even bigger issue', according to manager Rozie D, 36.

She said: 'To modern Malay youngsters, it's fine. But by right, it's not appropriate.'

Teenage fans like 15-year-old Nurfa Muhd Anwar, however, are eager to see the original version - sensitivities or not.

She said: 'Maybe the adults will be affected, but I don't think there's anything wrong. Judging from the pictures, it looks nicer than the one we're seeing now!'

Then there are those who outrightly slam Eric's version.

One posting on the StarHub Idol forum read: 'I think Eric's skewed directorial take on Taufik as a cleaner thinking and dreaming big things is awful and downright stereotypical. As if young, intelligent and driven dudes like Taufik nowadays couldn't hold any other job.'

Eric sighed: 'I'm happy with the final product, although I'm sad nobody will get to see it. But bo pian (Hokkien for no choice), what to do? Let it be lah.'

He deserves better, fans say

AVERAGE. Boring. Cheesy.

These are just some of the opinions of those who've seen the Channel 5 version.

It re-hashes old footage of Taufik Batisah's Idol journey, and climaxes with him singing on a verdant hill and twirling around with open arms.

Obviously, his first ever music video for his debut single, I Dream, isn't exactly what we've been dreaming of.

Which is a pity, especially since 23-year-old Taufik is our first ever Singapore Idol.

Surely he deserves better.

Ever since the clip debuted on New Year's Day over Channel 5, Taufik fans have been registering their disappointment on the message boards, insisting that their Idol had been 'shortchanged'.

In case you're wondering, it was directed by Channel 5's senior promotions producer Remi M Sali - who is also responsible for all on-air promotional trailers for Singapore Idol - and creative manager for branding, Mr Edgar Tang.

Between them, they have won more than a dozen international awards, including Promax and New York Festivals.

With the release of Taufik's album on Friday, let's hope that our Singapore Idol - and his fans - won't be let down again.

Three S'porean teens charged
THREE Singapore youths appeared in a district court yesterday accused of assaulting a Myanmar football fan at the National Stadium during the second leg of the Tiger Cup semi-final on Jan 2.

Muhammad Raini Adil, Muhammad Nur Yusof and Abdul Qayum Mohamed Subi, all 16, who were remanded for further investigations, face caning and up to five years in jail for rioting.

They will appear in court again next Wednesday.

The trio are accused of being part of an unlawful assembly that caused hurt to 22-year-old Yan Lin Maung, a general worker at a shipyard, at about 9pm that evening.

The victim was admitted to Singapore General Hospital suffering bruises to his face and cuts to his left hand. He received five stitches.

According to the charges filed, eight other unidentified youths were also involved in the assault. A police statement yesterday said that efforts are under way to arrest them.

The statement issued a stern warning against unruly behaviour during football matches.

It added: 'We will not hesitate to take action against those who engage in senseless acts of hooliganism.'

Major power failure hits five Malaysian states

KUALA LUMPUR - A power outage on Thursday blacked out large parts of peninsular Malaysia, trapping people in elevators and causing traffic chaos, witnesses and officials said.


The blackout began around 12.30pm (0430 GMT) in five Malaysian states. The country's main power utility company, Tenaga Nasional, said it was studying the extent of the disruption. It was not immediately clear what caused the blackout.

On Thursday, police were deployed to relieve road congestion in Kuala Lumpur's main business district as traffic lights stopped working. Some people were briefly trapped in elevators in shopping malls and apartment buildings, witnesses said.





Electricity was restored in stages after about 30 minutes.

Most hospitals, gasoline stations, road toll plazas, shopping malls and other businesses relied on backup generators to avoid shutting down.

Thursday's blackout was the worst since September 2003, when a glitch during maintenance work on the national power distribution system plunged five states into darkness for several hours. -- AP
