TIGA REMAJA DISAMUN DI JB
Oleh
Khalid Khamis

TIGA remaja Singapura pulang sehelai sepinggang selepas dirompak sekumpulan belia bersenjata tajam dekat pusat membeli-belah City Square, Johor Bahru, Isnin lalu.

Upset mum: Cops molested me
1. Sickly boy with low IQ caught for alleged shoplifting
2. Mum gets disorderly when police question him
3. Police get court order to remand her at Institute of Mental Health for 2 weeks for checks
By Andre Yeo

December 17, 2005

MOLEST, molest, the mother screamed.

--Posed picture
Hysterical, arms flailing, she accused police officers of the deed.

The police officers were questioning her son over a case of alleged shoplifting.

And Sally (not her real name) was trying to prevent her son, who is sickly and has low IQ, from being arrested.

We can't identify the boy or his mother as he is a juvenile.

Said the shopowner, Mr Sng, 37, who had called the police: 'I asked the police to give him a chance. Then, the mother came and caused a hoo-ha. She made so much noise.

'The police told her not to interrupt them as they were taking the boy's statement. But she challenged them to arrest her. She even laughed at them.

'When they wanted to arrest her, she shouted molest.

'It was a very small case but she made it into a big matter.'

CHALLENGED WARNINGS

Sally ended up being arrested herself.

A police spokesman said she physically prevented the officers from taking her son back to the station for investigations.

The spokesman said: 'She was warned repeatedly by our officers. When she challenged the warnings, she was placed under arrest for obstructing a police officer in the discharge of his duties.'

The police got a court order for her to be sent for a medical assessment at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

She was remanded there for two weeks.

When it was over, she was charged in court with disorderly conduct and fined $500.

A police spokesman said they referred people, who may be of unsound mind, to IMH for them to be assessed and as a precaution so they do not injure themselves.

An IMH spokesman said that, depending on clinical assessment and progress, the average period that a patient stays at IMH is two to three weeks.

She declined to reveal details about Sally's case, citing patient confidentiality and said they do not have statistics on the number of people sent to IMH for disorderly conduct.

Sally didn't deny that what she did was wrong. On 9 Dec, she apologised in court.

But she said she was worried sick for her 14-year-old son.

On 6 Oct, Sally was waiting for her son at a coffee shop but he failed to turn up.

She figured that he was probably at a nearby shop which sells game cards and video games.

Her lawyer, Ms Gloria James, said the boy had a handphone, so she called him.

He told her the police were preventing him from leaving the shop.

That was when she became hysterical and rushed there.

Ms James said Sally had told her that her son was frightened.

And she was trying to explain to the police about his condition.

Ms James added: 'She was trying to tell them to look at his face, that he was not normal and could not have known what he was doing. She was begging them to let him go. But they wouldn't.

'That's when she got hysterical.'

She was remanded at IMH from 8 to 21 Oct.

Dr Tommy Tan, a consultant at IMH found that Sally 'was very stressed and anxious when the police arrested her son. It could have caused her to act impulsively then'.

NO FULL-TIME JOB

The boy is also a patient at IMH.

Ms James said it was routine for children with low IQ to see a child psychologist there.

Sally was living off the goodwill of family and friends.

She cannot find a full-time job as she has to look after her only child.

She never married, and the boy's father does not give her maintenance, her lawyer said.

Sally's mother looked after the boy when she was at IMH.

Sally was not at her three-room flat in the western part of Singapore when The New Paper went there on Tuesday. A neighbour, Ms Ho, 37, said she and Sally seldom spoke to each other.

She said: 'She seems quite reserved. She goes to school every day to bring him home.'

Sally had declined to speak to The New Paper about the matter when contacted last month.

The police are reviewing her son's case.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMH: We make a full assessment

THE police sought a court order for the boy's mother to be remanded in IMH to assess if she was mentally fit to stand trial.

She is said to have physically prevented the officers from taking the boy back to the station for investigations.

A police spokesman said they had earlier received a call that a person had been detained for allegedly stealing some game cards.

The mother got upset when police officers were arresting the low-IQ boy.

An IMH spokesman, while declining to speak specifically on Sally's case, said that once someone is sent to them, they 'make a full mental, physical and social assessment... to explore the reasons leading to the disorderly behaviour'.

She added: 'There are usually multiple causes that we can identify, that will determine holistic treatment plans for the patient and family. The eventual aim is to treat effectively the underlying causes, together with rehabilitation of the person, back to successful living in the community.'

Sally's son's case is currently under investigation.

The police spokesman said: 'We are aware of his condition and have requested a psychiatric report from the boy's doctor. On completion of the investigations, we will consult with the Attorney General's Chambers.'

FINED

Sally was fined $500 for disorderly conduct last Friday. She could have been fined up to $1,000 or jailed up to a month.

Another charge of preventing a police officer from arresting her son was taken into consideration.

Mr Sng, who runs the game cards shop with his wife, said the boy often comes in to browse.

'We see him here often but although he does not buy anything, we were happy to let him admire the cards.'

But that day, Mr Sng alleged, he caught him taking five cards. When the boy denied taking them and did not give his particulars, Mr Sng said he called the police.

Mr Sng said the cards were worth about $100.

For this value, the boy's mother paid a high price.

'In-laws took my hubby, twice'
December 17, 2005

NEWLYWED Nur Hidayah Ismail's problems with her in-laws run far deeper than most.

--HARIAN METRO
Her husband, Mr Suhaidi Amaidin, 24, has been abducted twice by his own family since the couple married a month ago, she claimed.

The first time, he managed to escape and return to her.

Then, three weeks ago, he was nabbed again after a van ambushed the couple on their motorbike.

She has not seen her husband since.

Ms Nur Hidayah, 16, quit school to marry Mr Suhaidi, who is jobless, last month in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

Her family accepted the union.

GOSSIP

'People gossiped about their relationship because they had been seen riding a motorcycle together around the village,' her stepfather, Che Daud Jaafat, told The Star.

'Marriage was the best answer to quell the rumours. They loved each other so much,' said the 58-year-old trader.

The groom's family were upset by the rumours, he said, but appeared to have given their blessings as the 7 Nov wedding drew closer.

But Ms Nur Hidayah claimed that on her wedding night, relatives called Mr Suhaidi, claiming his mother was gravely ill.

When he rushed to the family home, they locked him in a room.

Three days later, he escaped through a hole in the ceiling and returned to her.

But on 26 Nov, when the couple were riding home to Kampung Banggol Ara, a van forced them to stop.

Ms Nur Hidayah told Harian Metro: 'I was on the motorcycle with Suhaidi and our path was cut off by a van driven by Suhaidi's brother. His brother then dragged Suhaidi into the van.

'I don't know what I have done wrong. Why did my two brothers-in-law take my husband away? I am still bewildered.'

She said she tried to fight them, but 'they were too strong'.

'I have not seen him since and he is nowhere to be found. I believe he is being hidden by his family,' Ms Nur Hidayah told The Star.

Her stepfather lodged a police report the next day.

Now, he says, the young bride is too depressed to eat.

'She locks herself in her room. Sometimes I can hear her cry,' he said.

Ms Nur Hidayah told the paper she is thinking of suing her in-laws for the humiliation they have caused her. 'They have taken away my husband and bad-mouthed me,' she said.
