Inspira is more than rebadging : Proton
Proton Holdings Bhd's new model Inspira is the result of original equipment manufacturing (OEM) collaboration with Mitsubishi Motor Corp, group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said today.
He said when the national carmaker soft-launched the Inspira on October 21, it had anticipated that many people would assume the company was just doing a rebadging exercise.
" What Proton did with the Inspira is more than rebadging. It is a product that we worked together with Mitsubishi, " he told reporters after the Inspira media test drive today.
The company took Mitsubishi's base model Mitsubishi Lancer, Syed Zainal said, adding that Proton at the same time injected additional values to the existing model.
" I would like to remove the word ' rebadging ' and describe it as ' OEM collaboration ', " he said.
" Rebadging is to take away existing logo and replace it with new logo. To be mindful, that's also done by other global original equipment manufacturers which is not wrong in the first place. "
In the case of the Inspira, Syed Zainal said Proton had enhanced the Mitsubishi Lancer's performance with its technology and capability.
" As a result, it is very clear and evident that the unique selling point of the Inspira is loud that the car has high-end handling system based on journalists' feedback after having driven the car today, " he said.
Syed Zainal said Proton had also improved overall performance by acclimatizing the car to local conditions from the engine performance perspective.
" There were some issues earlier but our engineers have done good job and the car has been tested to the limit by journalists, " he said.
Syed Zainal said the Inspira, which has been localised, will help Proton in providing value to local automotive ecosystem, particularly the vendor community.
According to him, the company has over many years improved on qualities as proven through Exora that received encouraging feedback from the market.
" This Inspira also has been assembled in the same factory in Shah Alam and we expect the same level of quality or much better, " he said.
"We also sent our people to Mitsubishi for about six weeks and flew in six Mitsubishi technical experts to our factory to ensure that this car from the assembly point of view was up to their standards. "
According to Syed Zainal, Mitsubishi's technical experts have indicated that the Inspira is of better quality than some cars produced at some other plants.
" You know when Proton launches new car, people say don't buy the first batch but I can assure you that this not going to happen, " he said.
" We are very confident that the Inspira has met all the standards as our partner Mitsubishi said all quality issues have been addressed. "
The Inspira is a four-door executive sedan due to be launched on November 10 this year. -

Proton tawar kereta hibrid bawah RM100,000

PETALING JAYA 2 Nov. - Proton Holdings Bhd. meninjau untuk menawarkan kereta hibrid pertamanya pada harga kompetitif di bawah RM100,000, kata Penasihatnya Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad hari ini.
Dijangka dilancarkan secara komersial tahun depan, Proton dikatakan membangunkan enjin hibrid serta enjin elektrik dengan syarikat British Frazer-Nash Research, LG dari Korea Selatan dan anak syarikatnya yang berpangkalan di Britain, Lotus.
Dr. Mahathir yang merupakan bekas Perdana Menteri berkata, pembangunan kereta hibrid merupakan sebahagian daripada inisiatif Proton untuk beralih kepada teknologi hijau.
" Kami kini menghentikan reka bentuk dan dalam proses menambah baik prestasi kereta. Kami akan membuat pengumuman tidak lama lagi, ” katanya kepada pemberita selepas menyerahkan kereta edisi ulang tahun ke-25 Proton kepada sembilan pembeli pertama di sini.
" Harga kereta hibrid akan tinggi sedikit berbanding kereta biasa kerana bateri amat mahal. Bagi pengeluar kereta terkenal, kereta hibrid, akan tiga kali lebih tinggi daripada kereta biasa.
" Kereta kita, saya rasa di bawah RM100,000, ” kata beliau.
