Defender Rio Ferdinand insists that the Manchester United camp wasn't an awkward one despite the return of Cristiano Ronaldo, who looked set for Real Madrid during the summer...

Revealing that he was in contact with Ronaldo whilst the transfer saga raged on, Ferdinand told Sky Sports: "I was speaking to him in the summer all the time anyway and I gave him my point of view and told him what I think. We spoke about a lot ofthings."

Asked if he was given a frosty reception on his eventual return, he responded: "No, the lads were happy to see him come back.

"If he was a different kind of person - someone who didn't really get onwith the lads, maybe a recluse - it might have been different.

"Bu the's a good lad who gets on with everyone. We enjoy his company, he enjoys ours, so there were no problems when he walked back through the doors."

Asked if Ronaldo deserved his FIFPro World Footballer ofthe Year award, Ferdinand was positive and further highlighted Ronaldo's 'winning mentality'.

He told the club's official website: "All the top players have a winning mentality, even in training. He's a guy who wants to learn and be the best in whatever he does - even in table tennis against me!

"Last season and the season before he was faultless. He was doing things other people cannot do and we have won a lot, so he's played a big part."

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that the summer signing of Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov can help the club win a third successive Premier League crown.

Defender Rio Ferdinand believes that the recruitment of silky Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov can help the club repeat the turn of the century feat.

"It is realistic to think we could do it again," Ferdinand told the club's official website.

"We have fantastic players. We have added Dimitar to the squad, who is a fantastic player. We have a very talented squad if everyone stays fit.The Champions League is something we would really like to retain and make history," he said.

"The gaunt let is laid down for us to doit because it has never been done. Winning the Premier League three times on the bounce, no-one has done better than that. The incentives are there. We could make history.

"It will be hard but that is what being at a club like Manchester United is about. We want to win," the centre half concluded.
