MRT train service disrupted after man jumped onto tracks at Kallang station
ADVERTISEMENT
Train service between Aljunied and Bugis MRT stations was disrupted on Wednesday afternoon, affecting about 4,000 westbound passengers.
The disruption came after a 32-year-old man jumped onto the tracks and was killed by an oncoming train at the Kallang MRT Station around 3pm.
To maintain service on the unaffected stretches during the incident, trains were turned around at Aljunied and Bugis stations.
Normal train service resumed at 3.50pm.
A one-way bus bridging service was deployed to ferry passengers from Aljunied to Bugis station.
Altogether 11 buses were deployed.
SMRT says passengers were informed of the service disruption and free bus services through announcements, notices and rail travel information system in the stations.
Those who were unable to complete their journeys due to the disruption can claim a full fare refund from the Passenger Service Centre at any of the 51 SMRT stations, within the next three working days. |

Electricity tariff up from 1 January
Electricity tariff will increase by an average of 1.45 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the first three months of next year.
The increase is due to the higher cost of electricity which in turn was sparked off by the rise in fuel oil prices.
Fuel cost constitutes about 50 per cent of the cost of electricity, but the increase in tariff has been small compared to the rise in fuel oil prices.
This is because of the enhanced efficiency of the electricity industry, resulting in cost savings being passed on to consumers.
The tariff adjustments have been approved

Seven killed, 48 injured in Indonesia bombing
PALU, Indonesia (AFP) - Seven people were killed and dozens injured when a bomb tore through a Christian market stall selling pork in Indonesia's religiously divided province of Central Sulawesi early Saturday.
The latest blast to rock the restive area came as security forces across the archipelago nation were on high alert for potential Islamic extremist attacks during the New Year period.
Mostly Christian shoppers had thronged the stall to buy pork, which is forbidden for Muslims, for New Year's Eve celebrations later Saturday night, police said.
National police spokesman Paulus Purwoko told reporters that three victims died at the bomb site and four died later in hospital.
He said that the blast did not bear the hallmarks of on-the-run Malaysian militant Noordin Mohammad Top and his group "because they normally target foreigners."
Palu police officer Rawang confirmed the toll had risen from an earlier six to seven, and said the number of injured was at 48.
Television footage showed helmeted police along with survivors carrying the bloodied victims, many of whom were Christians, to cars amid the chaos. The injured were ferried to four nearby hospitals.
"We have sealed the area for fears of more unidentified bombs," Rawang said soon after the blast. "Most of the victims suffered injuries to their legs because of the shrapnel from the bomb."
Provincial police spokesman Rais Adam told AFP that a bomb squad unit had defused a second bomb near the site of the first blast.
Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-populated nation, but Christians and Muslims live in roughly equal numbers in parts of the eastern island chain of Sulawesi and in Maluku.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono condemned the attack and immediately ordered an investigation, his spokesman Andi Malarangeng said.
Yudhoyono had also asked top security minister Widodo Adisucipto and national police chief Sutanto to "investigate whether this bombing is related to the previous attacks" in the region, Malarangeng told AFP.
National police deputy spokesman Anton Bahrul Alam told AFP that a special team of detectives had left for Palu from Jakarta to probe the blast, but said no fresh police reinforcements would be sent.
Meanwhile some 18,000 security forces on guard over the holiday period were "trying to prevent attacks such as the Palu bombing from taking place in other cities as people are gearing up for the New Year's party," he said.
Palu mayor Rusdi Maztura told Metro TV that the bomb appeared to be made of low-grade explosives, and he urged Christians in Palu to remain calm.
Doctor Basri, a physician at the state Bhayangkara hospital, said on ElShinta radio that three people who died at his hospital had suffered from massive loss of blood after shrapnel shredded their limbs.
Last month, about 1,000 extra troops and police were sent to Central Sulawesi after a spike in violence between Muslims and Christians, which has included shootings, bombings and beheadings.
The province's Poso district as well as the capital Palu have been particularly targeted in the unrest, with a Christian couple and two girls shot and wounded in two separate November attacks.
Masked assailants beheaded three Christian schoolgirls in Poso in late October, while several bombs have exploded or been discovered there in the past few months.
Widespread religious violence rocked the area in 2000 and 2001, killing more than 1,000 people.
A government-brokered truce was put in place in December 2001 but intermittent bombings, shootings and other attacks targeting Christians, believed linked to Muslim extremists, have continued.
On May 28 this year, twin bomb blasts tore through a busy market in the Christian-dominated town of Tentena in the province, killing 19 people and injuring at least 40.
Indonesia's spy chief warned last week that revenge attacks by extremists could occur after militant Malaysian bombmaker Azahari Husin was gunned down by anti-terror police on November 9. His chief accomplice was Noordin. |

Youth argues with girl. It turns into slapping match. 5 hours later, he meets with girl and her mother. Then a group of men attacks him
By Alvin Chiang

The gang of seven, made up of young men and teenagers, pounded and kicked him.
Their teenage target had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance. He was treated as an outpatient and discharged.
Five hours earlier at 5pm on Tuesday, Peter (not his real name), 19, had an argument with a 15-year-old girl, who he claimed is his girlfriend.
We are not naming Peter, an ITE student, as the girl is a juvenile and cannot be identified.
The argument at a bus interchange ended badly.
SLAPPED GIRL
Peter admitted that he slapped the girl.
It is not known if the later assault on him at another bus interchange was a result of the slapping incident.
Peter recalled the incident: 'I got a call from one of my friends who knows the girl.
'He said the girl wanted me to go to her house in Chai Chee immediately to talk about what happened between me and her.'
The girl said a vein in her left eye burst after the slapping incident with Peter. --KELVIN CHNG
He declined and told his friend he was hanging out with friends at the interchange.
About 10 minutes later, Peter claimed, the girl and her mother showed up at the interchange.
He said he saw a group of men, including some teenagers, close by.
The girl's mother claimed that she had no idea who these men were.
She said it was Peter who had told her to meet him at the interchange after she called him to ask why he had hit her daughter.
She asked Peter to apologise to her daughter. But while they were talking, the group approached him.
Peter said a man in his 20s, whom he did not know, challenged him to a fight but he refused.
The man then attacked him and the rest of the group charged in.
Peter claimed that his friends were prevented from helping him.
He said he covered his face with both arms to protect himself but it was no use.
He said: 'After I covered my face, some of them started to attack the back of my neck.
'I could feel my neck being hit by someone wearing boots. I could tell they were not shoes because they felt very hard.
'Before I knew it, I fell to the ground.'
Peter claimed his attackers continued to kick and punch him for about five minutes. They only stopped when a passer-by shouted at them.
He suffered cuts and bruises on the back of his neck, left forearm, left cheek and the left side of his ribcage.
His pair of green plastic spectacles was broken.
Police spokesman Siow Cheng Cheng confirmed that a rioting case involving seven to eight men assaulting a youth took place at the interchange on Tuesday night.
When the men attacked Peter, the girl and her mother moved away.
The mother said: 'When I saw the men going for the boy, my daughter and I quickly stepped out of the way. If not, we may have been hit too.'
She said she was afraid that the men might go after her as well.
'I was sitting next to him. Who knows, the attackers may think I am related to him and come after me.'
The girl disputed Peter's claim that she is his girlfriend.
BROKE UP
She claimed she dated Peter for about two months, but they broke up about six months ago.
She said she has another boyfriend now.
During their argument, they ended up slapping each other, she said.
She showed The New Paper her injuries last night. A red mark was still visible on her left arm.
Her mother said of Peter: 'I don't know why he thought my daughter is still his girlfriend.
'He kept sending her text messages on her handphone even after they broke up.'
