Alonso: Let's not get carried away
FernandoAlonso isn't getting carried away with his fourth placed finish inAustralia, conceding that he benefited greatly from the chaos aroundhim.
The misfortunes of other drivers, 15 of the 22-man field retiredfrom the race, played into Alonso's hands in Melbourne as whileRenault's R28 didn't have the pace to run at the front of the pack, itdid have the reliability needed to stay in the grand prix.
And stay was one thing Alonso did well as he hung in there,battling his McLaren replacement Heikki Kovalainen in the final stageof the race.
But while Alonso was able to hold Kovalainen at bay, it had moreto do with the Finn struggling to find a way through than it had to dowith Alonso's pace.
Alonso held on to finish the grand prix in fourth place, earning him and Renault five valuable World Championship points.
"I'm very happy with the result. All the simulations we didshowed us in eighth or ninth and finishing fourth was unthinkable,"Alonso told Spanish daily AS.
"It was a lot better than expected, but we can't forget thatwithout the retirements we could have easily finished outside thepoints.
"We are very happy with fourth, but if we continue like this weare going to be disappointed. Maybe in Malaysia, if both Ferraris, BMWsand so on finish the race, we are going to be outside of the points."
The double World Champion urged Renault to improve their pace,both for qualifying and grands prix, acknowledging that not everyweekend will play out like Australia did.
"That's why we have to do something immediately, try to improve in qualifying and get into Q3.
"Then we must be better in the race. It's true that I had a lotof traffic and bad luck with the Safety Car, but in other circumstanceswe wouldn't have done so well and we need to improve that." |
