This man, who played judo, is tapping the Korean flag on his judo uniform at a K-1 match in the picture. Interestingly, you can find the Japanese flag on the opposite side of the uniform as well.
Technically he is a Japanese citizen named Yoshihiro Akiyama, but he used to be a Korean named Choo Sung-hoon. Once he had dual citizenships, but later renounced his Korean nationality and chose the Japanese nationality.
According his interview, he said that because both of his parents are Korean and have taught him Korean culture he always hoped to represent Korean as athlete, even though he was born and grew up in Japan. As he hoped, he came to Korea, became a Korean judo athlete, and won the gold medal. Unfortunately, however, he was not “destined” to be a Korean judo athlete. As he became more outstanding, conservative groups in Korea Judo Association invisibly lobbied to force him out of Korea just because he was not a “genuine Korean” and did not graduated from a certain preferred university. Finally the Association succeeded in expelling him, using an excuse that he was not a native Korean but a Korean Japanese, and Choo Sung-hoon returned to Japan as Akiyama Yoshihro. In 2002 the year after he changed his nationality from Korea to Japan, he joined the Asian Judo Competition held in Korea and became a champion, ironically defeating a Korean athele at the final match.
At that time most of the Korean press was busy describing him as a traitor, criticizing him for having abandoned the Korean nationality. They did not seem to care about the fact that he had previously played for Korea and why he had to renounce the Korean nationality. In fact he won gold medals as a Korean judo athlete from 2000 to 2001 and as a Japanese from 2002 to 2003.
Although I am fully Korean extreme Korean nationalism sometimes freaks me out. Korean people require so many things for someone in order to be a “real” Korean-both of his parents must be true-blooded Korean, he must speak Korean well, and so on. Actually there are a lot of sportsmen who are willing to change their nationality for money or for an opportunity to join big sports events such the Olympics and the World Cup. Nonetheless, quite a few Koreans, especially the old, dislike people like this judo player because they think he is not qualified to be Korean from their viewpoint.
When I watched a TV documentary on this judo player, he said, “My mother nation, Korea, threw me away, but I still love Korea. No matter what they say, I am Yoshihiro Akiyama in Japan and at the same time for sure Choo Sung-hoon in Korea.” I do not know what he was saying exactly. One clear thing, though, is that he was an unlucky scapegoat of twisted Korean nationalism.

a few articles semi-recently have been talking about how song il kook’s apartment, along with lee hwijae’s, are not as they seem on tv, and how they are much bigger irl (72 pyeong/238m2 and 78 pyeong/258m2 respectively). the rooms outlined in green in the top picture are what we’ve seen of il kook’s place on return of superman so far.
